Wow. That was a little bit of a detour. As everyone else has said, thanks Anderson, thanks JR.

Did you try as Rob suggested- feeling each line for pulsing fuel, then pulling spark plug wires individually to see if one of them makes no change? (Following this as I will soon be trying to resurrect a dead tii...)

Thanks. Looks like I'll try and get this 240k mile tennis ball up and running and see how flat it is.

I've had silly, 180hp 2002s with all the expensive go-faster parts in it.....and yet a bone stock, but properly tuned tii is still my preferred mode of hauling holy ass.
Thank you for your input; I'll keep it in mind.
You're running 10:1 at sea level? We lose 3% of air pressure per thousand feet- so I'm down 15% just sitting here, and it only goes up- that's why I'm wanting to turn the pressure up a little bit with some more compression...

Hello. I'm Dave. Pretty new here. I've secured a hand-shake deal on a '72 tii, with a reported 240,000 miles and which has been sitting, outside, for about 15 years... So the whole thing is a bit rough.
It's coming with an extra tii engine that's already in pieces but only had 40k miles on it when it came apart.
This is going to be a completely fun car- it won't have to pass the wife test. So until we get all the lost paperwork found, I'm stuck with mental masturbation... Maybe you guys can help.
Anyone care to share any ideas on how much compression I can run if the car never goes below 5,000 ft? I run non-ethanol premium in everything right now- it's available at a pump in town. If I squeeze it a bit can I / should I use the stock fuel injection or switch to carbs? I've got a line on 4 FCR Keihin carbs (best 4 stroke moto carb ever made), which I'm very familiar with tuning... (If 2 is better than 1, then 4 is better than 2?) I'd like to be able to roll up to about 7k rpm on a moderately regular basis... It already has some Motorola electronic ignition... Plastic intake, with one of them taped up- apparently it's cracked...
Anyways, any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

For those of you that know who this guy is, I hate bearing bad news.
Apparently he was hit by a car while training on his bicycle in Italy near Misano. Ironic that a life spent on the limit on a motorcycle ends on a bicycle.
RIP Nick.

Sorry- just realized this is off topic, but he was such a great guy.

Woohoo! Just bought a '72 tii that's been sitting for a little more than a decade- so of course I just ordered the book! Thanks Rob.

I know it's late now, and the help wouldn't be until Monday morning, but I've got a contact down there that could probably point you in the right direction for a shop- he's my inside sales guy at Ohlins...
I'll try to keep an eye here, but ping me if you get to Sunday evening / Monday morning and are still stuck... dave@stmsuspension or 970.222.9597

Pardon my English, but holy shit! that exhaust sounds good!

Hey. New guy here. I'm going to be in the market for a "new" 2002 here in the near future and I'd love to find something kind of local (I'm near Fort Collins.) I'm thinking of something like a running project- not too nice, not too rusted out. Preferably from a responsible source...
I picked up an e46 wagon that is great, but just way too electronic- so I need to get that out of the garage to make room for something new...
So I figured I'd post here as a little bit of an introduction and as a way to get the word out that I'm soon going to be in the market for something fun.
Thanks much. Dave.
bilstein sports with stock springs

There are 4 things that dictate spring rate; the wire thickness, the diameter of the coil, the number of active coils, and the material properties. If you cut some of the coils off, you increase the spring rate- which is what you would want if you going to lower the car. You want it to be able to deal with the same energy input but you're doing it in a shorter distance- so stiffer spring.
People have been cutting springs for decades. Maybe find some used ones in case you jack it up you can put the originals back in...
