  1. Thanks beemeup. I'll be sure to grab some baking soda for next time.
  2. Exactly them Simeon. My roof isn't the thickest skinned one out there, so I'd like to replace the ones on the car and one extra in between the existing positions.
  3. Evening all Does anyone here know if the roof bracing (or whatever it's called) can be bought new from anywhere? Walloth and Nesch seem to have a click on picture but says not available at this time. Anyone know if someone sells it, new or copy part anywhere? Cheers in advance
  4. Thanks for the input I've got a DA polisher that I can use. I'll give that a go. When you say neutralise the acid, I've been wiping it over with water. Is there something better to do this with?
  5. Thanks for the reply Maurice. That's one of my favourite threads in here. I've managed this so far (this evening), and this took plenty of elbow grease! From this To this This was achieved with 85% mix phosphoric acid diluted 50/50 water, left to soak and rubbed with 80 grit paper. This was repeated maybe 4/5 times during the evening. I think it'll get better after a couple hours more work though. As you can see, there is still a fair bit of pitting which I very much doubt I'll be able to remove. Am I doing enough to the roof to keep the dreaded rust away? Cheers in advance for your replies guys
  6. I'm sure I've already got them Simeon. They are very good, but they do generate a lot of heat. They are hard textured, right?
  7. Thanks for the input guys These 3M pads. Are they the 3" drill chuck pads? There's all sorts of versions when I search on eBay. Cheers in advance
  8. Thanks for the replies lads I've been thinking about the epoxy primer, and what one to use, as ideally I'd want to brush/roll it on. I know spraying would get better results, but I want to use this on the roof mainly. Etching primers may have to do for the rest of the exterior. If you guys have any other tips, I'm all ears, seeing as I've never undertaken this sort of project before. Cheers
  9. Thanks for the replies guys If I follow your steps and go with the epoxy primer, can that take a filler over the top (bondo to you guys)? As it will certainly need one!
  10. This is the roof on one of my BMW 2002's. The previous owner has stripped it to bare metal and then left it in the elements. As you can see, it's pitted in most places, and I'm worried about leaving any rust in the pits. I've got a phosphoric based rust remover/neutraliser which is seems to turn the rusty areas black. My process is: Knotted wire wheel to take the top stuff off Brush in acid based gel and leave to work. Agitate with wire brush Wipe off acid gel Wire wheel the area Repeat a couple more times. After all this, it leaves me with the above result. Do you think I've done enough and should put a precautionary coat of rust cure stuff and be done with it? Or haven't I done enough? Shiny metal would be lovely, but I reckon if I remove the pits, I'll be taking too much metal off. The roof isn't the strongest one I've felt already! Any comments/suggestions welcome Cheers
  11. Hi there I'm looking at hoarding all the screen and door seals whilst I get on with the bodywork on my 02. Has anyone bought any of their seals? Particularly the door ones? Any input appreciated Cheers
  12. Hi people I was looking at Pelican parts' site and came across their range of door and screen seals from Uro parts. The price difference alongside the genuine BMW seals is quite a big difference! Has anyone had any experience with Uro seals? Fit and size wise, are they that much more inferior to BMW parts? Cheers for any replies
  13. Now I can't get any gas out of the welder! This fucker will get set alight if things don't start going my way!!!
  14. Cheers Toby. I've got it in an ok position now. Just need to clean up the rear panel where it'll be welded to the quarters and boot floor, then I'm going g for it! I'll get a few pics up when I complete it.
  15. Thanks for the reply. The boot floor does sit lower than it should, as it's been without a rear panel for a while now. I've been raising the boot floor (trunk panel) with a jack to get it in the right place. The rear panel is a used one. Looks straight enough, but it looks like it was hacked off with a grinding disc instead on neatly with a cutting disc. The edges of the panel aren't great, as in the leading welding edges aren't intact all the way up either side. I should be able to tidy it up and butt weld it ( and hopefully smooth the welded joins out), but I'm worried about welding it under a little tension. I must stress, it isn't under much tension at all, but don't want to get it all freshly painted and come across a problem that needs rectifying at the end. Cheers again for the reply mate
  16. Afternoon all A bit of advice needed if you please. I'm looking to weld this rear panel in by the weekend, but I'm having trouble getting it to fit between the quarters. It's too big to fit, but if I keep trimming from the panel, I won't be able to get the rear lights to fit, let alone getting the shut lines for the boot to look ok etc. There isn't anything to trim off the quarters, and I'm trimming beyond the ends of the rear panel. I can make it fit by easing the rear quarter ends out a touch, but is that the wrong thing to do? They won't be in their natural positions, but not far at all from it, if that makes sense. Once welded, will the slight stress in the quarters/rear panel cause me any grief down the line? Just to emphasise, I'm not putting loads of pressure on the quarters to make it fit. Just easing them out either side. Cheers in advance
  17. I'd be fine using hydrochloric acid, but just wondering how I'd get rid of something so potent after use. I think I'll use the phosphoric gel I have a couple times, then neutralise and seal it with a Bilt Hanber product, then paint over that with something (not sure what that'll be just yet though). I've found some b***h areas of rust on this car. Some of the welding I may have to get a pro to do, like rear sub mount areas etc. It'll take a fair while longer than I thought!
  18. Cheers lads I'll do my best to get it as clean as possible, then look into some of the products suggested. I do have a phosphoric acid gel. Not sure on the % of acid, but it stings the nose after a whiff! I've been using it on a few pitted areas on the body. Maybe that'll do for the neutraliser. I'll have loads of questions in the future. Cheers guys
  19. Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look into the Eastwood stuff. Is that something I can pick up in the UK? It is solid metal by the way It's a real tricky area to get anything into. I'll try and get a larger diameter wheel to get in there, but the body of the grinder doesn't allow easy access at all
  20. Hi guys My project has only just got off the ground recently, and I'm starting round the back. I've come across this area and need to know how best to treat the rust. It's a bitch of an area to cut out, and looks even harder to weld. I know there isn't any miracle rust killing solution, but is there anything close to it? As you can see, it needs cleaning a whole lot better than it is now, but still won't be anywhere near shiny clean steel. Any tips/recommendations are welcome Cheers Dean

    First Update!

Happy Good Friday everyone I popped down the car today. Didn't get much done as I was on my own for the most part, but I got some pictures nonetheless. And you'll have to excuse the welding. It's my first time! I nominate the peacock for the nosiest bird award!! I reckon one of em must have arc eye, he was standing so close!! Cut the rear panel off to access the boot floor. Panel was rotten anyway Cut a little section out to replace I'll sort this side out on Sunday Welded in a new piece. This little fucker was practically on my lap whilst welding! Now there's some nooks and crannies I need to get to. I'm struggling to get into panel joins to clean with a knot wheel on a grinder. Any opinions on what to buy to get in the corners etc? I'm talking areas like these And tucked away again (pain in the arse getting it in and out!) I know it's not much, but thanks for looking anyway.

    A Quick Intro

Morning guys First off, I have never done anything like this, so hopefully I'll be able to pick the brains of the knowledgable fonts on here. If I'm too much, just tell me! I bought this car back in November as a little wedding present for myself. I've always wanted one ever since the early nineties, and I fancied a project car for a while now, so took the plunge. I mean, how hard can it really be??? The little bit I've done for far has shown me it does actually seem quite hard! With limited time and knowledge, it seems like it'll take forever, but hopefully, with sites like this I'll be able to get it done. Here's a few pictures of her. She's a 1602 lux with a 2.0 in place. Supposedly a tii engine but with the carb setup. When I picked her up A couple pictures when I had a poke about You get the idea. I've done a partial strip down so far, and for some reason I decided to start with the rotten rear panel. I've cut it off and have a decent enough one to go in it's place, but I've cut it away to reveal more horrors. I'll get photos of that when I get back down there as I was pushed for time How it looks when I last left it Any comments or advice GREATLY appreciated Cheers
  23. I don't really get to many, and the ones I do get to are down here. Bromley pageant is a good one (Kent) and of course any meets they hold at gaydon. Brighton speed trials are something to see too. Best making a weekend of that though (treat the missus)!
  24. Next winter boss! Enjoy it for a bit. Will you do any shows in it this year?
  25. Yep, that's a bit of me Dave! Lovely car mate. If I get mine looking half as good, I'll be a happy man!
