Don't worry about the math so much. I had the same problem. I had to drop out of the first college I went to because I couldn't pass the prerequisite math courses to stay in the engineering department. Anyway I then went to a local community college and found a professor that really worked for me and everything started to make sense. Then I transferred back to a 4 year college and completed my degree in mechanical engineering. It was a long hard road but I'm glad I did it.
BTW I while in college I worked as a Porsche mechanic at a dealership. As an engineer I have been in the automotive industry and racing. Don't go the mechanic route. It's often crap work that does not pay that well. I have known mechanics that became engineers but never an engineer that became a mechanic.
