  1. Steve,

Thanks so much for your help.  Looks like Maximillian has that part number available.  Now to troubleshoot and make sure I need it.  I wanted to have it on hand when I pulled the old one out just in case I destroy the old one removing it.

One last question.  Unfortunately, I let it run out of gas thinking I had a 200 mile range.  I carry a two gallon gas can around with me.  When I refilled it, it only took 10 gallons to fill it up.  Not sure what is going on with that.  I thought I was on level ground and worked hard to feed all the gas in that the tank would take?

  2. My gas gauge is not working and I may need a new sending unit.  Am reading on the forum and troubleshooting now.  Thanks to those who have posted on this topic in the past.  My question:  For a 1973 Tii, do I need the 200 mm sending unit used on the base model that year or is there a 223 mm unit specifically used on the Tii.

I found this one but it may be too short for the Tii.

https://www.rogerstii.com/bmw-2002-fuel-level-sending-unit-1971-73/. My car was manufactured in March of 1973.

Any advice will be appreciated.  Thanks.

  3. Not sure the “dum dum” is needed at the end of each piece.  I would use it lightly if at all.  From having put new belt line trim on my ‘73 Tii, I can tell you to take care not to force anything.  The trim is very easy to bend but impossible to bend back right.  As others have said on this forum, take care to “massage’ trim in place.  The most challenging spots are at the four corners where the trim piece covers the junction of two pieces of trim.  Here, you will need to loosely fit the parts together prior to firmly and simultaneously tightening the bolted “T” brackets evenly to avoid bending the trim.

  4. Freshly chromed bumpers are on the way for my 73 Tii 2763563.  In removing the old front bumper to send for rechroming, I noticed fitment issues on both corners.  The left misses engaging with the “U” slot on the end of the bumper by about 1 1/2” and the right by about 3/4”.  I am assuming there was a slight bump in the past that bent the existing brackets causing this issue.  I have a few questions for the ‘02 BMW/FAQ brain trust......

    1. Are the brackets shown proper spec for a ‘73 Tii.  Maximilian replacement part numbers show BMW 511118222063 for the left and BMW 5111822064 for the right.  Both of those are “Y” brackets not like the “twisted L” brackets now on the car.

    2. Can the existing brackets be straightened?  If so how would I do that?  Tie it to a tree and ease backward or some more delicate way?

    3.  If I buy the Maximillian “Y” brackets, will the two holes in those brackets match up to the existing holes drilled in my frame?  Don’t really want to get into drilling any new holes.

Thanks in advance for sharing your hard earned knowledge on the above questions.

  5. My original jack broke today.  The threaded shaft broke loose from the gear at the top.  The jack fell, fortunately after I had the tire back on.  My question: Is the threaded rod that runs up the steel post of the jack welded to the cog that engages with the horizontal gear at the top.  If so, I think this jack is done.  If the threaded rod screws into the cog at the top, there may be hope.  Any help will be appreciated.  I think maybe the cog and threaded shaft were made together and due to age, stress and fatigue it reached the breaking point and is not repairable.  Insight from those on the forum that know something about this jack would be appreciated.,

  6. I believe my “new” 1973 BMW 2002 Tii has the original windshield.  On the driver’s side of the windshield are two decals.  The one on the right provides very helpful cold starting instructions.  The one on the left is illegible.  Does any one know what the one on the left would have been?  Just wondering before I scrape that one off.

  8. Back in 2015, my '72 , Polaris, 2002 was spending a little time in Charleston SC.  It was parked on the street in a quiet neighborhood.  Around 2 AM, that quiet, peaceful neighborhood became the place where it all ended for "The Bullet".  A drunk driver rounded the corner and plowed into it and kept on driving.  As the sun rose, it was deemed a total loss and thus over the five years since, that car has become a grand mythical legend in my heart and mind.  Memories of it are undoubtedly far better than it really deserves.

At age 68, the opportunity to relive my past has emerged and I have acquired a 1973 , Sahara, Tii that will be moving in with me in North Carolina.  I feel a little bit like a kid on Christmas morning.  Currently the car is located in Rockville, MD.  It has been lovingly cared for by the current owner over the past five years but driven only 500 miles during that time.  As I go up to drive it home on Saturday, November 7, I have great expectations about the trip home.  Recognizing that the car may not be totally reliable, I have confirmed that my AAA towing service is good for up to 100 miles.  In addition, I have decided to break the return trip home into 2 legs.  The first leg will be from Rockville MD to Orange VA, a distance of 93 miles, on Saturday.  The first leg includes about 19 miles on I 495, the infamous Washington Beltway.  The remainder of that leg will begin on I 66 and end on the less traveled roads of Central VA.  The second leg will be on Sunday from Orange VA to Rocky Mount NC via I66 and I95.   The second leg is 200 miles.

The reliability of this car is a complete unknown to me since it has basically been parked for five years.  The PO states it seems to be getting only 12 mpg and he thinks it is running rich and needs a tune up or turbo adjustment.  When the key is turned off, the engine diesels just a bit before cutting off.  I did take a 2 mile test drive in it to confirm that is runs and brakes work and all signal lights work.  My trip will be during daylight hours.

I expect the trip will go off without a hitch.  My loving wife of 45 years will be accompanying me in a "chase" car.  In the unlikely event that this trip proves to be too much stress on the "new" Tii, If something goes wrong, I do not have the mechanical knowledge to help the Tii limp to her new home.  Is there a shop/mechanic in this area, Rockville/DC/Central VA, that is reputable and has experience with 2002's?  If you know of one, please pass along their contact information so that I will know who to call on or where to have it towed if I get in a jam.

    Thanks,

    BillSmith

  9. On Friday at 3:30 AM my 1972 BMW 2002 was rear ended by a hit and run driver in Charleston, SC.  I am really bummed out about this.  Photos are attached.  Is my car totaled?   It had no rust, a split dash, good mechanical condition with all trim/hardware and good glass.  Good (not perfect) paint job.  The engine had 110,000 documented miles on it.  Ran strong with no smoke.  Good transmission.  I need opinions on whether or not this car is a total loss.  Does anyone know a body shop in Charleston, SC that would be a good fit to evaluate the car?  If it is totaled, can anyone refer me to a potential buyer for parting it out?  Any and all advice/opinions will be greatly appreciated.
