Well I found one for sale and I want one bad, it is a car I would enjoy and I don't mind turning a wrench either. I found one for $3500 and the owner says it is 95 percent rust free, around 100,000mi, had a fair share of work on the car, and only big mod to it is a 5 speed getrag 245 from an 83' 320i.
It includes extra parts:
passenger door + decklid
alternator + starter motor
2 extra trannys + limited slip differential
front + rear bumpers
drive shaft + 2 axle half shafts
owner ends the list there but says theres more parts
The only work I've done on motors is take apart 40cc 2-strokes; clean the carb, change piston etc. Only work on cars is brake pads/rotors, oil change airfilter ETC. the usual stuff.
I know Advance Auto rents tools for more than normal maintenance but in a couple months I go back to school and wouldn't want too many major issues to come up.
Could this car be pretty reliable in a couple months of ownership? How much might I expect to pay for maintenance on this thing to get it reliable? Would I have to replace the engine soon being that its original?
I shout out to all the CONNECTICUT people, are there any mechanics around who are knowledgeable about these cars?
Thanks alot,
Greg
P.S. Any tips for when I go to see/ test drive this thing(Ive read the FAQs on this site about checking rust, watching exhaust etc.)
Ugh sorry for so many questions
