Just used this method and it worked like a charm. I was a little concerned about how much force it took to remove the needle, but it worked out. Also, it was a good time to give a good cleaning to the instrument cluster and replace some bulbs... -

I just got my '02 new tires and a safety inspection so I can get regular (non antique) plates and drive it more. Very happy with the gem and it's plenty comfy on the highway...

Thanks for the links - I did a web search. Found opinions and failed projects. Asked here because I figured that any BS would be called out quickly. BimmerForums (where I spend lots of time on the e21 forum) has a weaker 02 section than this. Happy to be dipping my toe in here.
