  1. That trim was on the very early cars, hang onto it! What is your VIN number, that will tell when it was built. You can send an e-mail to BMW at this address;

    andreas.harz@partner.bmwgroup.com

You probably have a US car with no headrests, side marker lights and fixed seat belts since you have black plates which ended in `69. Drop me an e-mail.

    Chris

    My Vin is 1S60238.

Your 100 % right, no head rests, no side markers and my lap belts are fixed!

  2. Jason,

And be sure to check out your half shafts. The early cars have a long neck differential and the half shafts have a u-joint and a sliding joint, no CV joints here. Mine had an incredible amount of play and I rebuilt them, u-joints and boots are still available. You are going to find many differences on these early 1600/2002s so research before you buy something that may not fit. HTH.

    Hey Chris,

thanks for the help, i am feeling the love!!! So in regards to the brake issue, will everything just bolt up? Apart from the lines. If i go to a junk yard and find a new bmw what years am i looking out for? also what parts do i need to take from the car. I have a 76' at my house now, will this be good?

Pretty much i am not a fabricator and do not own a welder so if i cab get a way with "bolt ons" this is great for me.

  3. great to hear about another 68 1600! I've got one as well and I'm getting my brakes done right now, and I hope you or someone can help with something.... I bought rear shoes online and my mechanic said they're the wrong size. He ordered some from his supplier and they were the same so he sent them back, he told me I need 8" shoes. Do you know where I can find these? Also, does anyone know where I can find a reasonable price on front calipers?

Hmm, 8" huh. Thats good news, i need brakes as well, this helps me out alot. There is a Bavairian shop next to my house, ill ask some brake questions.

  4. can anyone tell me how to determine if this is an imported (Euro) or not. A while ago, when i was first searching for my car i remember someone mentioning something about the front hood molding? Well, i looked at some 02's and always remember something about the hood molding/trim. I looked at my 1600 and it has little mesh like grooves its not a smooth piece like my 76'. Anyone help out?

  5. If truly an bone stock and complete 1600 then keep it that way. But.....then you can make it into what Gustav is. He is a 68 1600. The possibilities are endless. It's just take vision, determination, and I almost forgot, a grove of money trees in your back yard.

    Pictures please.

I was actually checking out Gustavs photos and i am totally impressed. I think i may have even ruined my pants a little.

I am trying to keep it mostly original, trying to do some tasteful upgrades, maybe not so tasteful to the BMW community. I'll take some money tree seeds if anyone has em also. =)

  6. keep it original !!

thoses are becoming so rare...if its complete and original ill exchange you my turbo 76' for your 68' if you like...

It is complete and 100% original, down to the black and yellow plates! Needs alotta work though. Also not looking to trade. =( sorry. i was just wondering what swaps if any were out there of NON BMW ones?

  7. 0.4 L is a lot of dispalcement. Torque down HP down and not likely to go above 115. Intake and exhaust ports are smaller so difficult to just bolt on carbs and headers. Just as heavey as a a 2L. No break on autocross class. No sway bars (can you believe that!) but can be easily installed.

    Have fun

Hey thanks for the advise guys, i am so new to the BMW game its sad. I also dont know how much everyone will hate me here, but i was planning to do a NON Bmw motor swap, is this something that will get my BMW face card revoked here? Are there any others in this forum that do not have a BMW motor in there 02?

  8. Testing the waters here...

76' bmw for sale, parts car or resto, bought it for resto but change of plans now. Doesnt run, surface rust everwhere, appear to be no rot any where, 4 speed manual, top end of the motor is in the trunk, looks to be complete. Has all BMW glass, tranny, and panels, trunk, hood, interior is so so (blue), if any one is interested let me know, i can remove parts or if u need the whole car its available also. thanks.

  9. Where did you find it, what color and condition is it in, still have black license plates, is it a driver? Would love to see some photos.

    Hey Chris,

Yes its got black and yellow plates. Condition is 7 out 10 has some rot mot much, not rust in the rear rockers, mostly surface rust. Its white w/ black interior. All i need to do is the brakes and she'll be cruising in Socal soon!!!

  10. Good day to all,

Im Jason, new the BMW world, especially the 1600 & 2002 one. Just bought a 1968 BMW 1600 from an original owner, have the original title from 1968. Anyhow, i have been searching for forums and info related the 1968 BMW 1600. If someone can send me a link, that would be great! Also, i have a knob under the dash, driverside, closest to the door, looks like a push as apposed to a pull knob? anyone know what its for?
