This week, my 02' got a new engine.
I'd been experiencing a fair amount of blow-by and smoke on accel/decel for the last year, so a few weeks back I got in touch w/ Matt at Ronin Autowerks, and made the trip up to Fullerton. Matt suspected valve guides/seals, which would have been best case scenario. He ended up pulling the head, and did indeed discover that the guides and seals were the old variety, and were failing, relatively good news, easy to fix. He also performed a leakdown test, and found that leakdown was 18%-20%...not great.
After he inspected the bottom end, found that one of the cylinder walls was out of round by .0025", which explained the blow-by and the crappy leakdown. So at that point, I had 2 options:
1. Rebuild the current motor, and keep the car numbers matching, but wait 4 months for new parts.
2. Swap motors with a fresh build that Matt already had in his shop. Spec was the same as my current motor (9.5:1 compression and 292 cam).
I went with the latter and Matt installed the new motor, along with a bit of scope creep (battery to the trunk, and new 40's, instead of my 38/38)
It might be the fact that I was essentially running on 3/4 cylinders for who knows how long, but it's a completely different car. It pulls, idles smooth, and my god, the sound!
I don't plan on running open stacks for very long. Next step is to find a Tii booster and get a decent filter setup. I may get some foam filters in the meantime.
I can't say enough good things about Matt and his team. He was responsive, kept me updated on the build, and got the car done in a matter of a couple of weeks. If you're anywhere in the socal area, I highly recommend checking out Ronin. If you get lucky, you could probably catch a glimpse of the latest S.O.C car.
+1 on Matt.
Been really happy working with him on some of the fabrication stuff on my car. They got the pedals done today and floor boards which came out way better then I hoped for.

M3This, does anyone near you do dry ice blasting? No one in Spokane does it, at least I haven't found anyone yet.
Walnut or more gentle media like hot steam?
Good luck. If I find anyone around here I'll chime in.
Found a dry ice place here but they said it won’t strip old paint. Really only good for deep cleaning. -
Those came out great. Did they powder coat them?

Most chemical strippers will dissolve portions of magnesium alloy, if the rims are magnesium alloy. I know nothing about E68 rims. Are you certain they are magnesium alloy?Soda blasting is another option, provided you’re using soda as the media (if you’re blasting with sand as the media, you are “sand-blasting,” which might be overly abrasive, unless someone takes great care). I wonder if vapor honing is gentle enough — it’s sort of “media blasting with water”.
Regards,
Steve
yeah I found a article online that said not to soda blast as it causes contamination in the magnesium. I’m going to see if I can find a sandblasting guy locally that feels comfortable working with magnesium.- 1

I have used aircraft stripper for removing paint from wheels before with great success. You might find some media blasting places here in Utah.
yeah the stuff I saw online said to not use any chemical strippers with magnesium as it can cause issues. I’ll have to get on Google and see if there is anything in OR or UT -
Got my new to me set of BBS E68 wheels and took them apart so I can rebuild them.
if anyone has suggestions on the best way to remove the old paint on the magnesium faces let me know. I read online not to chemical strip them and that not to soda blast them with sand and walnut blasting being options but sand can cause pitting. Problem is there are no walnut blasting places here in Idaho so if anyone know of one in a neighboring state or and alternate let me know.

Thank you. New lips are available from wheel flip in California for 200 a piece! So something to consider, since only the rears need resizing for a stock body 02.
i have the Son Of Cobra pig cheeks on my car and would be rebuilding to 9” all around so unfortunately for my application I would need to completely rebuild them. So would have another $1,000 in the cost. -
Love these but unfortunately would have to rebuild to different barrels for my application. So once I factor in new barrels would put them out of my price point. But great wheels none the less.

what I wanna know, is where did you get the 2.5l crank??Ed Z
...inquiring minds want to know
I was luck enough to get it from the guy I bought the motor from he had it but it was never installed. Only issue was it didn’t include bearing so tracking down new crank bearings was more work then expected as both Turner and VAC said their sources couldn’t supply them any more. I was able to connect with a guy out of Germany on S14.net that was able to supply them and the 2.5L Evo head gasket. If anyone is interested in his info shoot me a DM.- 2

good dox for a s14/m2, circa 2022 build thread maybe.
-Only YOU can prevent thread dilution.
Oh soooo diluting the thread. LOLPistons go in the engine that goes in my 2002. Last time I check the thread was titled “What did you do YOUR 2002 today” not what did you do to your all original 2002.

Give them a call and ask. (801)491-2926. If they won't do it, let me know and maybe we can work something out. If you are anywhere along eastern Idaho (Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, etc), I will be up there in the middle of next month, so it could save you shipping one way at least.
I’m in Boise to the western side but I appreciate the offer. I’ll give them a call and see what they say. -
Do you know if that shop will let people ship parts in from out of state? I’m in ID so not too far but haven’t found a plating company up here.
