  1. I have two 4spd '02s, both 1972s. One has a locked-up engine from a lack of oil on the part of the PO. It will not turn with a wrench on the crank bolt. The donor/parts car has a motor which does turn with a wrench. What I'm hoping for would be any tips/tools that are needed to get the good motor into the other car. I'm planning to do it with a hoist, rather than from the bottom. I do plan on taking a look at a rebuild (or at least a freshening up) of the donor motor while it's on the stand. I don't really want to yank the tranny out at the same time, but I've heard that it should be done this way. Other possibility - is there a way to try and unstick a frozen motor, given that it was an no-oil rather than heat-related seize? I've heard tales of mallets and Marvel's Mystery Oil, but am wondering if it may be beyond that, given the length of time the car sat with a frozen engine. Thanks very much! Sorry if this is a repeat, please post any previous threads on the topic if you know of some. Thanks!
  2. Hello - Looking at some of the paperwork that came from the PO with my 1972 '02, it appears he changed the motor in 1986. I found some additional paperwork from BMW, in a plastic sleeve, indicating a motor number for exchange followed by the letters TI Here is a pic - it looks different than the motor in my 1972 donor '02. Thanks! - Paul
  3. Great! Thanks for the info. I'll give you a call sometime. Right now, I have more time than money to work on the car. I remember Fred's, and the sign with the '02 on it from when I was I kid. I've considered some of the shops on Fort Lowell, but still have a bad taste in my mouth from my second car when I was a teen - a Porsche 924. Too many $800 head gasket jobs, I suppose! - Paul
  4. Hello! Is anybody able to provide any info on an experienced '02 mechanic in Tucson, AZ? If anyone knows of anybody who can come to my place, that would be awesome. I don't really want to try craigslist, but that's my next stop. I have more time than money right now, and am looking for somebody who doesn't charge tons. Thanks! - Paul
  5. Hello - I have a donor car, and I need to replace some missing/damaged glass on the other '02. How do I remove the passenger side roll-up window? I'm not sure how to get the vent window mechanism off to remove the door panel. I also need to replace the rear window. The seal on the donor car is extremely dried, and appears that it would be difficult to remove or cut through. As always, any help you could provide would be much appreciated! Thanks!
  6. OK, this is what I'm seeing from the front of the car. Took the dipstick off, and that helped somewhat. Still too tight a fit. Is that the motor mount that is at the bottom of the picture? Is it possible the starter is too large? A little frustrating, but good to be getting somewhere. Also, the dipstick tube was held by a plate with four bolts. Does this indicate a particular block? Thanks again! - Paul
  7. The battery was relocated to the trunk by the PO, so that's good. I need to replace it, as there was no battery when I purchased the vehicle. I'm thinking Optima red-top. How does the dipstick come off? Is it bolted or pressed into the block? You guys are AWESOME!
  8. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure and I don't have it with me. I'll post pics later. I suppose it's one of the larger ones, as I can't really imagine it being any bigger or heavier! The question is knowing if it goes down from the top, or installs from the front. Thanks very much as always for your help! - Paul
  9. I purchased a 1972 2002 with the starter out of the car. I have since purchased a re-man Bosch from AutoZone. Do I need to remove the intake manifold in order to fit the new starter? If so, must I remove the carb from the manifold as well? Any other tips would be very much appreciated! Thanks!
  10. Wow!!! Thank you all so very much! One of the reasons I purchased the '02 is the tremendous amount of enthusiasts out there, much the same as one of my other passions, Vespa motorscooters. I really appreciate your help!
  11. Hello - I purchased two 1972 2002s - one complete but not running, and one for parts. These came in a box with the vehicles. Any ideas? Thanks!
  12. Here are a few more photos of my 2002, on the way to its new home in my garage. The PO says the motor is "ruined", because he ran the car out of oil Not exactly sure what type of damage has been done. There is (very black) oil on the dipstick. The interior is pretty trashed, after one of the windows was broken by a stereo robber. Also, I'm wondering if anyone can identify the bushings that came in the big box o stuff that came with the cars.
  13. Thanks for the info! I've pinned down the two VINs from under the hood. The blue car is 2578838. The white car is 2577799 Also, here are a few additional shots. Can anyone i.d. which head this vehicle has? Thanks for the replies! - Paulie
  14. This is my first post to the forum, and I'm really happy to have found this site! I purchased two (essentially) basket case '02s from a young man on craigslist in Tucson, AZ this week. I paid $800 for the pair. I've always wanted an '02, after some great memories of a friend's in high school. My goal is to get the one that is more complete back on the road first - hopefully by this summer. I also want to stop the "parts car" nonsense, and bring both back from the dead. Even if it takes a few years, it's about the journey, and not the destination, right?!? One thing that has concerned me is the info I've seen on batteries for '02s. I've read they require lead-acid types. Is there a good aftermarket source for these, ie Sears Die-Hard, Optima, or others? I believe the PO has moved the battery to the trunk. Cheers, and I look forward to posting more as things progress! - Paulie
