  1. Hey, that is a very good idea. I like that. Or, as you say, I would be driving down the road wondering why my gas cap kept hitting me in the leg. But at least it wouldn't be rolling down the interstate....
  2. Thanks for the sympathy. Still makes me feel kind of stupid though. Especially when the wife and kids laugh at me.
  3. Oh well, thanks. I think. I will do some calling around tomorrow morning in hopes of finding one local. If not, I will order. Until then, I will look like a true redneck with foil or something over the filler hole! Yee Haw!
  4. Don't you love it when you f' your own self up? Well, I did it. Looked by the side of the road for nearly half an hour and never did find the gas cap I left sitting on the car. Crap. Is there any other cap I can get at a general parts store that will fit? Or am I stuck ordering one from Bavarian or some such place? Michael
  5. Interesting. I have never run across him.
  6. Ok, so I never see another '02 around Charleston, SC. Never. And then this weekend I see two! One was parked and an ice cream / coffee shop in the Mt. Pleasant area and looked well loved. The second was kind of odd. It was a late model and parked in a Barnes and Noble parking lot. It had obviously been there over night. Went back the next day and it was still there. Car has KY plates but an SC hand written tag in the back window. Very odd . . .
  7. You are my hero! Worked like champ. Man, that was almost too easy. And much less damaging than the 2X4 method. Only downside is my keys weren't in the trunk, so where are they?! At least I have a spare ignition key and a trunk cylinder that is locked in the open position.
  8. tjones02, got your email. Excellent idea and I am about to go try it. I have a feeling that will work. As for trying another '02s trunk key, I know no other owners. This is the first 02 I have ever even driven. I never see them around my area, although I am sure they must be here somewhere. Michael
  9. I do have speakers in the parcel shelf and I have been looking at that. May give it a try tomorrow. If I can't do it that way, I will go visit a locksmith on Monday to have the lock picked. Might be worth a while working with the speaker holes and a clothes hanger though. I am wondering if somehow the key is in the trunk. I have torn the house apart and can't find the thing.
  10. Well, the 2x4 trick didn't work. I even had a friend, who is not as attached to my car, wield the slamming 2x4. Didn't work. We did hit it hard enough to dislodge the tail light lens though. Now I have to fix that too.... I am no good at picking locks, so my next stop will be to a lock smith to see if they can do it. lthough having an "access hole" cut in the rear parcel shelf is starting to look good too. My karma sucks recently. I must have done something really bad.
  11. OK, now that was just mean!!!
  12. Found this . . . guess it is worth a try!
  13. How hard? Just worrying about denting the metal of the rear of the trunk. I can always blow another $30 on cylinder and key. Of course as soon as I do something like this I will find the f&*$ing key!
  14. Drill through the lock maybe. But no sawzall... yet!!
  15. Email sent. I really see there is no way in through the back seat... So what now?
  16. If I pull the back seat out, can I get into the trunk? I have lost the f%$#$#@ trunk lock keys! Only got a new tumbler that I could actually lock about two weeks ago. Now it is locked with my stuff in there and I can't find the keys... If I can't get in through the back seat, any other ideas?
  17. I just got a 26R for mine from Advance Auto for like $60. Fit perfectly up front with a little room to spare. Also has plenty of cranking power. Perfect!
  18. Any further updates or info? I think I am going to drive up from Charleston, SC for this one. Sounds like a blast!
  19. Problem finally solved. Bad positive battery cable. Wasn't making a full connection. Now fixed and Roxy is motoring happily! Thanks to all you guys for your help. Michael
  20. OK, so with no load it shows 12 to 13 volts. As soon as I turn the ignition key to Start the voltage drops to 0. Just bottoms out. And that is a new battery. Any ideas? Is the battery bad? Is the starter dead and causing things to croak? By the way, tested the power at battery and through the wiring, chassis, etc... Results all the same, so it appears not to be a bad ground like I feared. And here is a newbie type question. Should the horn work when the ignition is off? (It doesn't.)
  21. Was. This has changed with the new 2007 MINI. And although the engine was based on the Chrysler Neon engine, the transmission was totally different.
  22. Yup, FWD. As was the original. There would have to be some very major changes in engine mounting, steering, and much more to get a Mini engine in there. And I think by doing so you would lose the best qualities of both cars. Just my two cents! I love them both....
  23. Great diagnosis tree! Unfortunately I walked out the door this morning without my test equipment so my poor car had to sit there in the parking lot one more day. I have already put the meter and such in for the trip tomorrow though. Oh, and when I say won't start, I mean nothing. Zilch. No turn, no click, no nothing. Not even the horn will honk. And that is with a brand new battery in there. So, baring the very slight chance that they gave me a bad battery (which I will be able to check in the morning) then either a lead is broken somewhere or a ground isn't grounding. Good news is that tomorrow will be warming for working on this. Bad news is that it will be raining.
  24. At least fire would be exciting!! No, I actually don't mean that. I did the quick check visual check for shorts but didn't see any. Tomorrow I will have my meter with me so I can do the real check. Did find out that the car's alternator has been replaced with the later model not requiring all the plugs on the back. Thought I had found the problem at first...
  25. I am thinking the grounds too - I have started cleaning them. I need to get the one on the block though. May also replace the battery terminals themselves. They are quite old and have started to crystalize.
