  1. Cut the stock rod in half and had a work colleague spin the parts in a lathe and machine a thread on each part. (he had a lathe big enough get the angled part into the chuck) The center part is a piece of 4140 bar drilled and tapped. (I'm now the owner of a M14 x 1.5 Left Hand Tap)

  2. Thanks for everyones input, I've spoken to my local machinist about machining the valve stems in place, he's done it before so that's not an issue (you learn something new every day!). New steam seals are on order, just need to track down some suitable retainers.

All I need to do now is ask my wife for an increase in my allowance....

  3. I assume to machine the old style valve guides to accept the new seals you'd have to remove them and turn them on a lathe, wouldn't you still have the same concentricity issues as installing new ones?.

Having said that does anyone have details of the top end of new style guide that I could give to a machinist?.

Further web browsing has seen the suggestion that standard retainers can be used if a few thousands is ground out of the id of the inner spring, can anyone confirm or deny (sounds a little suspect to me)

  4. Hi,

Are double valve springs absolutely required when using 304° cam?.

Do you have to change the valve guide to a 318 to install double valve springs?.

Do you need different spring retainers for double valve springs?.

As background to my questions, I'm part way through a engine build for my rally car. I have the 304° cam, the double springs, and a nicely reconditioned head - but with the old style valve guides. I suspect I know the answers to my questions, but they're not the ones i'd like.......

  5. Hi,

For my 02 rally car I've removed the heater core and simply plugged the outlet from the pump and the connection to the back of the head, it appears to be fine but on reflection I was wondering if it may of been better to connect the pump outlet directly to the head connection perhaps with a restricter in the line. Opinions?

  6. Hey

    good to see another kiwi.

What was the purpose in the e30 dizzy? I just about went link also! but at last minute changed my mind. What injectors have you used (did they come off of a common car found in new Zealand)?

From memory they're 150cc injectors from a E30 318, they're really a bit small as I'm reaching 90% duty cycle at fun revs. I think Holden Commodore ones also fit and are a better size. I'm putting together a better engine so I'll have to upgrade them when I do that.

I use the E30 dizzy to give the ignition signal. I initially had the Link in a Corolla so it was set up for a reluctor style trigger.

  7. Hey - give me a yell when you're done - I'd like to compare notes. I used a Link ECU with an e30 dizzy for "Inky"

How easy depends on how much you need to learn. If you are a Mechanical/electrical genius then easy as. If you have access to a wreckers yard then even easier. I am about 1/2 way through now and I would say it has not been to difficult. just time consuming.

  9. I've removed the boosters in my 2002 rally car. Note it's right hand drive and uses E30 disc's & calipers all round so the info below may not be completely helpful

I've extended brake pedal above the pivot point and mounted two MCs inside the cabin, next to the steering column. MC for front is 5/8" MC for rear is 3/4". I plan to pull the pedal box out in about week and tweak pivot points as I'm not completely happy with the pedal pressure (it's a little high). I'll take some photos & post them.

And the throttle body is the restrictive bit- the rest of it is pretty decent

    for what it is...

I'm currently running an E30 inlet manifold, with a Link ECU (http://www.linkecu.com/). Currently the engine is fairly stock but I'm planning some upgrades in the the near future. I was targeting around 150 hp will that be possible with the E30 manifold?. I know I need bigger injectors as they're currently maxing out at about 90% duty cycle.

  11. You may be able to pull the gear from the E21 dist and install it on the 02 dist. I haven't checked the diameters of the shafts etc, but it may be worth a try.

    Careful when doing this,

1 - The dist will be spinning the wrong direction, so instead of advancing it will be retarding.

2 - There are some spirals cut on the shaft which stop oil from coming out past the dist shaft, these will be going in the wrong direction and tend to pump oil out (and on to the exhaust).

I've put an E30 dist into a 2002, but the mechanical advance is welded up & I use the shaft & gear from a 2002 dist.

  12. So let me see if I've got this straight,

I know where I can get a close ratio five speed originally fitted to an M20 engine. I guess that would make it a getrag 245/11. I would like to fit it to the M10 engine in my 2002 rally car.

From previous posts am I correct in stating?

    1 A 245/11 will not bolt directly to a M10 engine

2 If I find a getrag 240 I may be able swap the whole front casing between the two boxes?
