looks like I had the wrong url.

I don't see the VIN/DOM lookup feature. Perhaps I was thinking of another site.

I recall there was a way to check the date of manufacture using your VIN on http://www2002registry.com/ page. That site has been down for a while.

Is there an alternate site out there somewhere?

My son and I flew out to Long Beach last weekend and picked up Happy Face. Can't say enough about the great job that Peter and Erik Sliskovich and Coupe King did on the car. Its gorgeous and runs great. She's now home safe and sound in Houston.

We took leisurely 3-day drive from LA to H-town along I-10. The car did great.

Well, the restoration is only a few days away from completion. Next week I'll fly out to Long Beach and pick up Happy Face. Here are a few shots taken out in front of the shop. She's ready for the drive home to Houston.

After a considerable amount of time my '72 roundie full restoration is nearly complete. I bought the car in early 2003 thinking it was already nearly there. I got a rude awakening.

It turns out the original shell, while being a nearly rust-free body, had hidden but fatal frame damage - I discovered this last year when Pete Sliskovich of Coupe King in LA took my car in for his stab at the restoration. Pete had a spare clean and straight body and we commenced to do a shell swap of all my bits and pieces collected over the previous 3 years. The car has been at Coupe King now since last January and is on the verge of completion. Its gorgeous.

The link which contains all the gory details is above. In the end, it looks like I'll finally have that beauty I was always working towards.

I would recommend against specific forums.

this is essentially what Roadfly did several years ago. They used to be a simple little forum where people could gather and exchange comments for individual BMW makes, just like here. But then, they were commercialized and someone realized that they had the makings of an empire.

It had the effect of diluting the community and as a result, I rarely ever visit Roadfly. You've got a nice thing going here. Preserve it.

We've done a bunch of day drives here in the local BMWCCA chapter. I've helped organize many of them.

I guess what I'm talking about are the rallys where a whole slew of vintage cars come together of all different varieties, not just bimmers. I don't think our BMW chapter would do one of these because of the tie to the national club (BMW specific, club membership and all that stuff).

A few years ago the Alfa club here put on a nice run to the Texas hill country where all were invited. I haven't seen anything else like that since.

I saw a mention of the California Alpine Vintage Rally and have seen other notes about some of these across the country.

Was wondering if anyone has some info on some of these rally's, especially road rallys like the Alpine one where many different makes are present.

I'd like to dress up my engine just a bit. I have a nice flat black valve cover, but my filler cap looks the part of a 35 year old car. Any sources out there for chrome oil filler caps or at least something that shines a wee bit?

the rear rubber exhaust hanger for my '72 has finally given out. Are these readily available or are they hard to find? I need some way to keep that ehaust up.

HSE violation credits. Each employee has to identify at least 8 examples of an HSE violation to meet an annual quota. As a result, we are constantly on the lookout, otherwise, no bonus!

I managed to get them off, using a combo of all of the tips provided. I was ready with the torch but didn't have to go there (saves the nuts).

After I got them off I could see that they had red lock-tight on them, which might explain my difficulty

by the way, I love that spanner picture....that seems the perfect illustration of the principle of torque..... lever arm X force = torque or something like that

I'm trying to take the drive shaft out. No big deal to get it out from the center mount and guibo, but the four bolts attached to the diff are impossible to remove.

there's no leverage back there and no way to get on a socket. All I have is my 17mm wrench. cannot apply enough torque to remove.

any tricks here?

Inspection of the gas tank reveals the following:

We had a recent rain and some of the wetness in the trunk could be from water leaks, but the gas smell is unmistakable. I'm wondering if I need to remove the entire tank, or if this is normal given the proximity to ten gallons of gasoline. No question though, that filler hose needs to be replaced. Where to I get this stuff?

I work in the oil industry, and friends, its true, the trend is UP

today oil is at $75 a barrel, it will hit $100 within two years if not sooner

oil is still being found, but not at the levels before, and World demand is up, big time (thank you China and India).

this is a long-term critical problem (but we always knew it was coming)

here in the western world there will be more pressure put on us economically to consume less. Even my MINI uses too much gas.

Hopefully, our economies will adjust before it begins to hurt us

I've picked up one of the rear braces/battery mounts for the trunk. Its something I really want to do for all the right reasons. However, I am hesitating because when I open my trunk, I smell gas. Its not overwhelming, but it is there. My wife says that when she gets in the car she smells gas, I may have gotten used to it by now.

Anyway, first I am wondering if indeed there is risk by putting a battery in the immediate vicinity of the gas tank, and in gas fumes (explosion comes to mind).

Second, if the fumes are unsafe, what can I do to fix this?

The FUN has begun

After 34 years of livin, Happy Face participated in her first autox (that I know of). She's shod with all stock suspension (recently refreshed). She leans pretty hard. She'll get stiffer suspension after I've had a bit of fun in her stock form.

I'd like to first tackle the possible grounding issue. This might also be why the tach doesn't work (or that might be due to the Crane system I put on, not sure). The tach was always spotty even with the previous system. So I've always suspected a grounding problem.

What's the approach to ensuring proper grounding of the gauges?

If i pull the dashboard, I'll replace all the bulbs as a matter of course.
