what is the best way to prep the inside trunk for painting. Does all of the rocker gaurd have to be removed and then re-applied?

that area presents a challenge for painting. Basically you want to create adhesion by increasing the surface area , that's why you sand prior to painting to create grooves (if looked under a microscrope, that is). I would use a coarse scotch brite (green or red) to roughen the surface. Make sure it is cleaned and degreased.

Removing the sound deading material is a pain in the butt and you will need a special schultz gun to reapply it. So if it is not broken leave it alone and paint over it.
