Guest Anonymous
Will a water pump make noise when it fails. I started the car and at first I thought the fan was hitting something. Could it be the pump?
Guest Anonymous
it could be the bearing in the pump. what kind of noise is it? steve k.
Guest Anonymous
It could be the pump, but then it must be really toast. It could also be alternator so remove the belt and feel them both. There should not be (almost) any play in the bearings and they should move easily. I hope this helps, Tommy
Guest Anonymous
id look for the noise elsewhere before condemning the water pump. not to say it isnt the problem, but it SHOULD be leaking if it has failed!! -Rob
Guest Anonymous
URL: http://www.zeebuck.com/02bc/index.htm This happens when the alternator mounting bushings turn to goo, as the are wont to do. A bearing makes more of a siren-like or growling sound. It could also be a bearinng in you alternator. Best to take the fan off and spin things by hand, checking for roughness and play. You could also use a long screwdriver or a mechanic's stethoscope, but be super careful doing so around the fan, belt and pulleys! regards, Zenon

Guest Anonymous
Grab fan (engine off of course!) and try wiggling axially. If the fan wiggles more than a few mm (remember the blades are flexible, don't be fooled)the wwater pump bearings are going. Usually accompanied by white stains dribbling down from the weep hole at the six o'clock position under the fan, on the pump body.
