Another off topic exercise in futility by our resident troll/ provocateur

Zac/Milo/ Slavs whatever. Kick it to off topic curb where it belongs.

Yes, kick it out to the "Off Topic" or "usher it out to the cornfield". But, you know, it has a lot to do with 02s because in the not so distant future and by the progression of this logic we will be legislated off the roads. Then you can just sit there and look at your car, caress it with adoration and affection. Yep ! Maybe they'll find a compromise and allow you to drive your 02 in its "Plain Jane" stock configuration with single barrel Solex carb. I can live with that, but most of you side draft testosterone junkies can't. And, then what ? If you don't follow the rules, the "Suede Denim Secret Police" will knock on your door; "Come quietly,if you please.......we've come for your uncool car........we'll crush and smelt it into a pot or pan so you can fry your meatless Vegan sausages.......close your eyes and shout ! California ! California uber Alles. Haaaaa! Ha! Ha! Haaaaa! Ha! Ha!

I think I'll move East and enjoy some good old fashioned moonshine and real meat sausages with the East Coast contingent.

Anyways, I got to get out to my garage, fire up my cars and run them a little before the fuel turns to Jelly and the batteries go "South".

Then there is that broken heater box cable. I got to pull out the heater box and deal with it again, not fun.

  2. The following is the seller's description on the e-bay posting. Does anybody here seriously think it is accurate ? This thing is a pile of rust.

"I’m putting up my 1802 for sale, I have 2 other projects in que and i may not get to this one, yes, this is the rare and elusive 1802,  not to be confused with the 2002 touring…with smaller companies making parts, this 1802 can be put back to show room finish in record time, with no parts needed to be fabricated, the car is a total rehab and ready to be brought back to life for the right enthusiasts who understands how to work on these cars. "

  3. Throw it away or use it as a large paper weight. Not everything that came from BMW is good. I have a"118" head from a 1600 which is really porous. It's like an aluminum sponge. All the other heads I have from BMW are smooth, dense castings. Some of their imperfect castings slipped through the QC check.

Having 'been there and done that' in your loafers I'd find a couple of

late 320I hubs, some vented Volvo calipers, and buy a pair of 1977 vented rotors.

And then find some 0.070" fender washers, and have big front brakes.

I had an 02 with Volvo calipers, 77 320i vented rotors and braided lines. It stopped on a dime, a very noticeable improvement. But, you can't fit all 13" wheels over those calipers. I ran 14" wheels. If I ever fit the vented rotors again, I'll fit the corresponding 320i calipers so that I can run 13" wheels. The aluminum Brembo Alfa calipers from those wedge shaped late model Alfa GTVs also work for this application. But, I heard they flex when they get hot. I have some in my stash, but I doubt I'll ever use them.

es, they have a certificate (piece of paper) you have to purchase now. It’s 125€ !!!

    You don't say ?

Is the certificate authenticated by a notary from Bavaria ? In addition to being stamped it must be exposed to the notary's flatulation after he has lunched on a healthy meal of sauerkraut, sausage and rye bread and washed it down with German lager. And, the certificate must also have stains from the notary's greasy fingers. Now, it is official with all the correct "Patina" for all you "Provenance" gurus.

    It's time to do the dance;

    Fahrt ! Fahrt !

Last night my mother made cabbage and vegetables over pork ribs. I ate it with hearty homemade bread and washed it down with a St.Pauli Girl German lager. And, that's how I feel the day after. So, in addition to owning these cars, I have first hand experience with the official certification process.

  6. It looks like an early 69 1600 with single circuit brakes. I have just such a car in almost stock configuration with the original brakes. As mentioned above it's probably the MC or brake shoes in need of adjustment. While inspecting the brake shoes also inspect the drums for wear. Badly worn drums cause also cause such symptoms. If you need to replace the MC, the 320 MC is a direct replacement except that the fluid reservoir tank is of a different shape. The 320i MC is readily available and affordable.

^ I tried to explain that to the other fellows while they were in the data-collection faze.  Apparently someone else they were talking to convinced them otherwise.

Too bad, they excluded a lot of potential buyers.

  8. I have a 4.10 with my 5 speed overdrive trans. It works pretty well, almost duplicating a close ratio 5 speed with 3.64 diff. But, I still have about 7% taller gearing in 5th compared to a stock 4 speed and 3.64. The 4.11 cuts down the overdrive to 7%. Well, in my case it's actually only 4% taller because my smaller diameter 205/60 x 13 tires cut it down another 3%. The 3.90 cuts it down the overdrive to about 12-13%, which is the sweet spot.

With my 4.10 I'm in 4th or 5th on steep mountain roads or just about most of the time. 1st is just about useless, I can start from 2nd with no problem. It's probably a great combo for spirited track days and mountain roads.

I knew the speedo was off by using a MPH phone app while driving.  About 4-ish mph in the 45-ish mph range.  I figured that was due to a ratio difference between the original Long Neck diff and the Short Neck that was in it when I got it.  I just swapped out the 3.64 diff that was in it (was a little noisy) for a better used 3.64 unit.

Now that I realized that it's not like my '65 Mustang or F100, change a gear on the end of the speedo cable to calibrate it, I might consider putting in the 12/69 speedo.  Not too worried about it being off a bit.  Our '74 02 has a 5 speed so it used to it being off.

Although, it is nice having the Mustang and even the '65 F100 with the 300 I6, T-18 4-speed and a GearVendor O.D. be dead-on.

Is there any other way to correct it without using a different speedo, something internal that can be tweaked?

Both, the 4.11 diff and the 3.64 diff were made in long neck and short neck configurations. The 1968 to mid-69 2002 was equipped by the factory with a long neck 3.64 diff. The 1600-2 from 1966 to mid-69 was equipped by the factory with a 4.11 long neck diff. At about mid-69 BMW switched to the short neck diff configuration, not because the short neck is better, but rather because it was cheaper to produce. The long neck is a better design as it holds more oil and has a large hex nut deep in the neck for the crush collar. The flange for the driveshaft is held in place with another large hex nut. On the short neck design the crush collar and flange share the same hex nut. And, once the hex nut is loosened, the crush collar must be replaced. To replace it the diff must be disassembled. This isn't the case with the long neck design where you can replace the oil seal without worrying about the crush collar.

In the US the short neck is most readily available in 3.64 ratio. It's difficult to source in the 4.11 ratio because BMW ceased importing the 1600-2 into the US in 71. where the short neck 4.11 it was only available  for about 2 1/2 years. The long neck in 3.64 was only used in the 2002 for 1 1/2 years from 1968 to mid-69. So, it's even more difficult to source. But, the long neck in 4.11 is easier to source as it was used by BMW on some of the NK cars and the 1600-2 from 64 to mid-69. The short neck 3.64 is easiest to source.

If your 1600 is equipped with  3.64 diff from a 2002 and you are using a speedometer geared for the 4.11 diff, it will indicate a speed 12% slower than the speed you are traveling at. On the other hand, if you are running a 4.11 diff and you use a speedometer calibrated for a 3.64 diff, it will indicate a speed 12% faster than the speed you are actually traveling at.

    12% of 45mph = 5.4mph.

    12% 0f 75mph = 9mph

This is a significant error. If your short neck diff is a 3.64, I suggest you use the speedo from your 69  cluster because it appears to be calibrated for the 3.64 diff, judging by the red maximum speed mark on it for for 3rd gear, which is at just over 80mph. Notice the 3rd gear maximum speed mark on the 1600-2 speedo is placed at under 75mph.

You can get the speedometer recalibrated by a speedometer shop. But, it's not cost effective as the price for a used speedo in the correct ratio is much cheaper.

If you are still running a 1600cc motor with a 3.64 diff, you don't need a 5 speed trans with overdrive in 5th. because you already got your 12% overdrive through the diff. It's actually a good combination for the 1600.

  10. Your 69 cluster has the speedometer geared for the 3.64 ratio diff on the 2002. So, it came off a 2002.

Your model year 68 cluster has the speedometer geared for the 4.11 ratio diff for the 1600.

You can easily differentiate the two by the maximum speed marks for each gear on the face plate. There is also a different number stamped on the back of the speedo corresponding to the different ratios.

Notice also that the 69 cluster has the black plastic knob for resetting the mile marker. On the 68 cluster the knob is chrome. On the 66-67 model year clusters this knob is metal. But, by 68 it may have been plastic with chrome plating. I'm not sure. Is your knob metal ? It was all black plastic by 69, though.

Both of your clusters have the brake warning light. 66-67 model year clusters don't have it.

Your steering wheel is the 68 specific three spoke wheel. It's higher quality and slightly different from the later three spoke steering wheels. It was only used on model year 68 cars. They ditched it for the lower quality wheel to save on production costs.

  11. The 1966 three piece dash with chrome trim and non-padded lower section is very similar to the the 67-71 Euro dash except that it has the "BMW 16oo" badge affixed to the upper section vie pins which fit into grommets through the dash. This is the rarest of all 02 dashes fitted to 1600-2s produced through August of 1966. It's nearly impossible to find this specific upper dash piece in any condition.

My thought is that if you're going forced induction, 2 liters is a lot, and the stock crank is very stout.

    Beyond that, not much...

I agree. The stock pre-77crank is forged and surface hardened. It's not cast like most later BMW cranks. Leave it 2.0L and save yourself $$$. And, hunt down a stock pre-77 forged 2.0L crank in "Standard" size, not reground.

Forget about the "Americana" "Stroker" hot rod concept. The 2.0L already has a long stroke. Why make it longer ? If you keep increasing the stroke, you'll end up with a truck engine.

  14. Well, I hate to be the naysayer, but I don't understand why they are focusing on the two piece dash. The three piece dash is much better as it offers more versatility, and it was the most widely produced dash. Furthermore, those of us with the very early Euro  three piece dash can also use the top piece, which is always the first to develop cracks. By re-producing the two piece dash you're just narrowing your market niche and prospective sales. It's a bad choice, not to mention the two piece dash is ugly, but not as ugly as the one piece. So, I'm really not looking forward. I'll never purchase a re-production two piece or one piece dash.

In the last resort I can probably figure out a way to cover the dash with vinyl, where it would look decent. Or, I'll fill and paint it. But, I'm never going to opt for a "Glob" two piece or one piece dash.
