Whatever color you finally decide on, be sure to shoot some test panels with the various undercoat/primers that the paint will be applied to. White. gray, rust red, charcoal and black are common undercoats/primers/sealers.

The base for the paint will have an effect on the final color. Shoot the panels, take them out in the sun, shade etc and decide. Rule of thumb is lighter primers for lighter shades, darker for others. Dark greens and blues like charcoal/black.

As always, it's the owner's choice.

That's great advice.  I actually just watched a YouTube video where a guy sprayed the same base color over 5 different colors of primer.  The difference was significant.

When I painted my E30 I actually tinted the sealer with the base.  It came out a pretty close match to the original color.

  2. I'm about in the part of my restoration that I must decide on a color, and I have been really leaning towards green.  I think I've seen all of the original 2002 paint code greens, I'm hoping to find some photos of cars painted other non-2002 paint codes, especially metallics.  I had some 90's-era Alpina Green Metallic mixed up and sprayed some spare parts.  It is definitely a top contender, but its always difficult visualizing a color on the entire car without seeing a photo.  Post what you got with the associated paint code / name please!

  3. Anyone still producing the Kamei style air dams? Or know where to find one?

EDIT: Pierre is still making reproductions as of this date (Nov 2023) and he got back to me via e-mail.  His e-mail is bimmerfan02@hotmail.com for anyone looking now or in the future.

  4. I Was re-installing my crankshaft with new main bearings yesterday and noticed I had one washer different than all the others (see pictured).  It was on bearing cap 4 and looked like it had a rubber material on it.  All of the others were standard wave washers.  Considering replacing it with a wave washer like the others but wanted to make sure there wasn't a purpose for it to be there first.

  5. Building my motor and my crankshaft has a pretty deep groove at the rear main seal.  I saw that a shim was available to get the new seal to ride on a virgin area of the crankshaft but is now NLA (part 11141252897)   Anyone have any advice on how to tackle this since the shim is no longer available?  Would hate to get this thing all buttoned up and it leak at the rear main seal.

  6. So my ‘69 2002 did not have sway bars (among several other parts) when I purchased it. I figured someone had taken them for another car or something, but after trying to fit a stock front swaybar to my subframe today I was running into serious clearance issues with the tow hooks and noticed my tow hooks are “upside-down” from most of the photos ive seen online (mine swoop up instead of down) Wondering if I’m going to have to cut them off to mount this swaybar. Anyone ever run into this issue?

  7. I'm rebuilding the engine on my '69 2002 with 121 head.  I found these on eBay.  Mahle 082 09 01 (1st over, 89.265). Wondering if these would work with a similar compression ratio to the stock flat tops I currently have.

Also, can I re-use the wrist pins from my current pistons as these don't include them, just rings.

    Thanks guys.
