  1. Here’s what I’m working with. The 42.5mm bearings I find have the wrong attachment clips. I’ve spent hours cleaning the transmission and have replaced the rear crankshaft seal and pilot bearing. I also sourced a rebuilt transmission although I replaced the seals in the one I pulled
  2. Alexander you have helped me a ton! I’ve ordered three clutch release bearings and none work. True, I need the 42.5mm height bearing; however, the one in your photo is the wrong type of attachment clip for my fork. I tried to lock the bearing in but it was way too loose - unlike the original that has the clips like this one: if I could fine a 42.5mm bearing with the clips above; I’d be in business. I love working on these cars. It’s challenging to source parts but I rebuilt my heater box and it was a success. I’ve finished the interior and only have a few more thoughts to process before putting the clutch and transmission back in. I’ve been taking a break from It and reinforcing the subframe on my e46. Your feedback has helped and hopefully I’ll source the correct bearing or find an arm that fits the 42.5 bearing with that style of clip.
  3. Thanks Mike, I figured the old one is fine since it was quite and spins nicely. I’ve got new seals all they way around so this should be good for some time. That’s interesting about the 228mm PP. I bought the 215mm before finding a new 200mm PP and clutch. The 215mm flywheel would bolt right up, it’s just the clutch arm and bearing don’t seem to match as the bearing isn’t deep enough like the original.
  4. Thanks TobyB and tech71. I’m going back with the 200mm and I’ll use the 215mm stuff in the future. I have three 3 speed transmissions so what’s a few extra parts. I’ll have it all buttoned up soon.
  5. Hello all. I'm on the final leg of getting all parts together for a clutch job on my 1602 8 bolt flywheel. Boy, have I spent some money trying to work my way around the 200mm clutch. I have purchased a 215mm flywheel/pressure plate/clutch with NUMBEROUS release bearings. The release bearing WILL NOT fit my clutch fork and are too short. So.. I sourced from overseas a brand new 200mm pressure plate/clutch disc. I'm damn near contemplating using the old throw out bearing since it was not making any noise and spins quietly. But IF I wanted to install a new release bearing, can I use a different fork? If I go with the 215mm setup, the 215mm release bearing fits the clutch fork but appears to be too shallow to depress the pressure plate. Can I install a different fork that the original 200mm one? Any advice would be great! Photos to follow.
  6. Thanks, Rick. I’ll pick up PVC plug this weekend! Great tip.
  7. Thanks Rick, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I’ve read the horror stories of buttoning everything back up only to have the seal leak. I’ll be sure to follow your advice. This project is making my M3 subframe drop a piece of cake in comparison. Still, I love the 2002s.
  8. Thanks TobyB. I’ve been reading your posts and it’s helped me a lot over the past year. Heater box rebuild was a breeze but this clutch job has grown legs. Any idea what to do about my rear crankshaft seal and the old one being 2mm thicker? The only new ones I can find are 90x110x12 and I need a 90x110x14. No shims are available and I’m afraid the seal will walk once the flywheel is bolted back up.
  9. Thanks tzei and if it’s that simple, I’m an idiot. I’m worried about the seal walking and leaking later.
  10. The old seal measures 90x110x14 The new seal measures 90x110x12 Shims are no longer available via online search. Ron
  11. Hey there. Well I finally pulled my 4speed out of the 1602 to freshen up the seals while changing the clutch out. During the process, I sourced a rebuilt 4 speed of the same type. Here’s the question. The transmission I pulled will shift in gears when the selector is pulled BUT the shaft spins free like it’s in neutral. This can’t be right. When doing the same procedure to the new transmission, the shaft will only turn when in neutral - the way it should. My old transmission was working perfect when I pulled it and I did not drop it or fiddle with anything. Something is clearly wrong. Also, is it normal to rotate the input shaft say clockwise and the output shat rotate in the opposite direction? The rebuilt transmission is doing this and I cannot remover the rotation of the driveshaft. Video posted. Ron IMG_7008.MOV
  12. Hello and thanks for reading and the help! I’m working on my 1974 1602, 4 speed manual that I purchased 3 years ago. I just recently pulled the 4 speed manual to replace the clutch and all was going well. I’m replacing the flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate with a 215mm - the original was a 200mm. Sourcing a new throw out beating has been challenging and I’m still working on that. Here is where I’m stuck. I was replacing the rear crankshaft seal and CANNOT find a seal as thick as the original. My micrometer is on the way out and I’ve ordered a new one but did confirm it’s several millimeters off - can’t remember the exact size number but will post photos. I’ve searched the forums but can’t find where shins are available (online too) or a ticker seal. The new one is 90x110x12 and is too shallow. I’m at a loss other than having a custom shim made or finding the correct seal - which seems to not exist. Any suggestions??? Thank you in advance. Ron
