  1. Got the new headers installed last weekend. Noise is gone! Thanks everyone for your help!
  2. I think you’re right. I think I’m just going to get some new stainless headers because the ones I have look pretty beat up and I rather not deal with welding it.
  3. Just tried to recreate it while revving it and I still can’t. I wonder if maybe the car being under load changes the tone or maybe shifts the exhaust to where the crack opens up.
  4. You are right!! I didn’t even notice that. I went back outside to check and sure enough I can feel the crack with the back of my nail. I started the car and felt around and sure enough you can feel the air coming from it. It’s not a lot of air so I’m guessing the crack might be more open where I can’t see it. Thanks everyone for the replies. I will report back once I get the crack sorted.
  5. Drained a little transmission fluid and it looked fine. Some very fine metal in the fluid but nothing out of the ordinary. I also removed the valve cover to inspect and nothing was wrong. Checked the rockers by hand and none were overly loose. No broken rockers either. I did notice the headers run very close to the floor. I tried to bang on them to see if they make contact but it seems like they are far enough not to rub. Going to take a drive now to get a video of the sound
  6. I’ve checked the exhaust system over with a friend. We were not able to find any leaks. I do not have the plastic fan shroud. heat shield by the center bearing is tight not sure about the heat shield by the pitman arms. engine mount limiter was set correctly. I replaced the mounts maybe a year ago. I’ll try and get a video soon. Hopefully I’ll be able to pickup the noise.
  7. I played around with the distributor today and turned it clockwise a good amount just to see if retarding the timing would get rid of the noise but it did not.
  8. Removed the spark plugs and they look good. I think detonation can be ruled out now.
  9. I actually did put the rear up and tried to recreate the noise last week and i couldn’t get it to do it. That’s why I think the part about the car being under load is critical. I think output bearings sound likely. Is that a common failure on 2002 4 speeds? The car has about 120k miles.
  10. I have not adjust the valves recently. I was actually planning on doing it soon. I’ve checked the center bearing on the driveshaft it looks good. I’ve also had that fail on my e30 so that was one of the first things I checked
  11. I checked the guibo when I was under there. It looked good. I’ve had guibo failures before and I know what it sounds like. The noise is usually more of a thudding sound. I’ll still check lifting and pushing down on the shifter.
  12. Engine and transmission mounts were replaced. I’ve had issues with the fan in the past so it is pretty chewed up. I’ll maybe try and remove it and drive this weekend.
  13. I checked the timing and it was good. I had a friend come over to check it out and he said it sounds like an exhaust leak but at the same time it doesn’t. Checked the exhaust gasket at the headers and below the car and no leaks. We also checked the driveshaft and it’s good. I was able to get the noise to be constant while driving in 2nd gear at 3500 rpm. I might try and record it this weekend because I can replicate it now.
  14. Okay I will check timing and mixture when I get off work.
  15. The engine runs fine. Pulls as it always did and idles good.
  16. A couple weeks ago my 1975 2002 4 speed developed a weird noise. When I’m under load around 2-3k rpm there’s a rattling that starts coming from the front of the car. The noise continues to redline I’m fairly sure but it’s hard to tell because the exhaust is loud. It happens in all gears. I don’t have to be at full throttle either, even maintaining speed in 4the gear the noise can still be heard. When at low load it’s very inconsistent but sounds like a box of rocks rattling around. Sitting with the car in neutral not moving and revving it up the noise is gone. I’m pretty sure something is wrong with the transmission. If anyone could maybe pinpoint what part of the transmission it is that would be great. Guessing some kinda bearing because it happens mainly under load. The car also makes a scraping noise once it’s warmed up and at idle. It sounds related to the other noise. It doesn’t go away if I put the clutch in either. I appreciate the help
  17. Pelican is notorious for saying things are available when they are not. Part is discontinued at the dealer but if these website have a stock of them that’s another thing.
  18. I am selling my NOS 2002 Tii badge. This badge has been sitting inside a parts box for about 7 years. I do not own a tii which is why I never used the badge. I do not know what happened to the packaging. The part is basically brand new. Has a couple surface scratches from sitting in a box that can most likely be polished out but I rather the buyer decide if they want to polish or not. The pictures don’t do it justice the badge has an extremely shiny mirror finish. offers are welcome. Shipping is included. Buyer can either pay PayPal friends and family or I will split the sellers fee. I understand I made this FAQ account today but I’ve been on Bimmerforums since 2014 with the same username. I thought I should try and sell the badge on here first before I list it on eBay. There’s another one in packaging on eBay for $600 so that’s where I got my price from.
