  1. Reviving this thread which has been very helpful.   I am trying to solder a new female tail onto the old brass (ground) tab a la ‘Method A’ by Dudeland in preceding post.     Unfortunately (but thankfully) I have not pulled the heater box and trying to solder a new female tail on the broken blade while laying on my back under the dash...brutal- but anyway, despite flux, proper soldering iron again and multiple attends, it will not solder..I mean 6 attempts.  Do I keep trying or is the material that the tab made of not solderable??....tab is looking shabby now ?.  The worst of it is with the Pandemic, I can’t simply go to the auto electric place and get a variety of connectors to try - even yesterday I had to get Flux from a friend ..I am Mgivoring everything the past three weeks just to keep my projects moving forward.  Any ideas to why my soldering isn’t working?

update:  It turns out when I swapped out the tip from my iron..it worked brilliantly.  Tail is now installed...but motor still doesn’t work ?

I had to convert the broken female spade on the resistor board to a male by snipping off the rounded (curled) portion and replacing the male spade on  the wire with a female connector.

This may fix the electrical problem, but then you need to make sure the motor is spinning freely (and in the right direction).

I will try that next...but I think the fan motor has seized...certainly it doesn’t spin freely.  I appreciate everyone’s ideas and experiences.

  3. So the grey/ brown terminal was broken on the resistor board - and even when I held the conductor on the tab, I could not make that fan start try as I might...either that way OR per my previous post, grounding the fan so I have to assume the fan is seized (because grounding it when I had power at it I couldn’t make it go either). I haven’t opened up the box...but it appears the job I was dreading is upon me.  Can you buy just the board and the motor and rebuild everything else in situ?  The foam gaskets and operation of the flaps are pretty good actually......but alternatively- after searching and reading on the subject - is there a complete heater box/ fan kit you can buy?

  4. Thank you all for your responses.  In my combination of excitement and anxiety to having my new to me car with a dozen issues you’d expect might overwhelm a new owner.....and a marque (forum) I am not familiar with,  my post/ thread  lacks the precision required - and should be limited be one topic - particularly on the subject line.  I will sort through the vehicle.

  5. Hello all.  New to me 2002...runs beautifully...note the leak front casing...should I fix immediately....do something else when in here...don’t worry about it...be worried?..and second question..is that an OEM head..this motor  is out of a 1980 320 apparently.  No 2002s in my area to compare to.

getting holes centered for clips is more critical than spacing

100%...which is causing me the most anxiety.  There are so many holes I have to drill on this car....and if I give it to a body shop, I am not sure if they are going to bring any more commitment to quality than I would?!

  7. All...searched but can't seem to find a diagram or picture of the 2002 with the placement and type of clips with size of holes for the rocker install.   I will be installing BOTH the belt trim all around AND rocker trim both sides....but the PO filled all the holes in these two areas before repainting my car.....so really have no reference.  The diagrams are so hard (impossible) to read.  I got a good photo earlier in the month for the belt line but haven't been able to source any detail on the rocker trim.  Is there a good diagram out there somewhere showing 1. what type of clip 2. where they are places 3. hole size to be drilled?...or am I forced to fly blind.  I am a little nervous drilling what will effectively be +- 50 holes in my car between all the trim work....wonder if I should get a professional body guy to do it ?

    Thank you very much.

  8. Just one photo...but up close it looks almost as nice as it appears in the picture here....and checks a box in the column where you can still buy site unseen from strangers if your instinct tells you that you can.   I think the 2002 is one of the coolest platforms ever done in a car but I am not focused on a restoration or preservation project.  I am setting a long term plan out for the car but it will be a conservative restomod....lower slightly with Eibach springs - Alpina type wheels (15") - install ALL the chrome upper and rocker moldings on it.  It already has an M10 motor out of a 320 with a five speed..so maybe a header...maybe not.  The interior is Tabaco color and really cool.  I was going to swap in Recaros and such but decided to keep the OEM seats for now because they are in beautiful condition.  Will repair the cracked dash....do a retro looking radio with blue tooth...exhaust still sorting through as you have read....simply open up the sunroof and enjoy.  There will always be little projects on it to do so in my garage to occupy spare time - but not dominate my weekends as I still like to golf....and it will be a wicked machine to drive to the course.  I like it a lot.

  9. Thank you all for your posts.  At this point I am excited to get the car on the road so asking the shop to rotate the muffler and fabricate an outlet as Mark92131 has suggested...drive and assess. It’s the first time I laid eyes on the car despite having bought it six weeks ago.  Some transmission oil and engine oil showing up on on the underside that I have to sort through...but the body - frame - is clean clean clean - really outstanding..and it runs beautifully.  The car was in California all its life....and we don’t see undercarriages of 50 year old cars looking like that here.

  10. All...seeking advice on improving the interior on my new to me 73 Roundie - with saddle (i think this is the name of the color )  interior which is in a '6.5 to 7.5 on 10' condition.  Long story short, I love the color and I would like to reuse the seats for authenticity 'sort of' - BUT really to improve the comfort/ look while repairing just two small tears in them by adding foam on side bolsters/ thigh support/ seat pad/ pad - because I think they just look cool.  Seeking out genuine leather in this color to match the door cards and redo all surfaces front and rear - in as close to OEM weave as possible AND seek out chrome hardware for the seats.  I do have a lot of questions for the experts on this forum;

    1. Was saddle the name of this color in 73?  I don't want to convert to black.

    2. Has anyone ever modified/ altered these existing E10 seats for a sportier look by improving side bolsters and seat pads? - and could they share what they learned with photo?

    3. Any source for the leather and what the name of the weave would be?  I do want leather for the smell and texture - but if that isn't possible, a high quality vinyl.

    4. Any body know if the chrome hardware for the seats are still available or where I could fine them?

Next steps are repairing cuts on the dash and adding a vintage looking radio - carpets...but that is for another thread.

I thank everyone in advance who can help.
