  1. I don't expect from anyone to tell me BUY IT or DON'T BUY IT. I just wanted to read some opinions from people that know better than me and then decide. I also want to thank everyone for your answers and help.
  2. It only had some surface rust which occured after the car was repainted. Whatever happened to the vin was before the repaint but I don't know if it was rusty before that. Even if it was cut to replace the fender and put it back, the edit is still visible and can cause the problems I mentioned before unfortunately. I see no other reason for (what it looks like and correct me if I'm wrong) a straight rectangular cut right under the number, other than to 'edit' it.
  3. Now I get it. So the edge of the lower sheet was cut right under the chassis number. That speaks for itselft.
  4. Yes but I'm still trying to figure out what I see because it looks different.
  5. I can take the risk and buy something that needs more repairs than I expected but I can't take the risk of the car being seized or be unsellable (might sound extreme but as I said I don't have the experiance and I need to protect myself). I'm accountable for my choice so I have to be sure it is correct. The owner sells the car as it is and I want to buy it if the chassis number is not changed. That's why I'm asking people with more experience for their point of view. If the number appears to be changed then I just don't buy it.
  6. I don't know how acceptable is a chassis number change in your countries but here it is strictly illegal. I don't think that the car was stolen or something, but I'm not sure a can risk it. I might have problems passing the inspection or legal problems in case of an accident. In addition, if I was able to spot the change having zero experiance, anyone can spot it and I might not be able to sell it if I need to in the future (which is not my goal but you never know). I could feel that the sheet metal wasn't smooth and by watching the photo it is obvious that the surface is not leveled and looks like it has been cut just around the number. To describe it better, what you see there is like a step. Is this normal or not?
  7. The picture is taken like you are this guy and look right under the chassis number. The green piece on the top of the picture is just a rag in case it is confusing. I don't want to post more information of the car since it's not mine.
  8. The photo shows the sheet metal right under the chassis number where the arrow points. The price is great, the body condition is very good, the seller is a great guy that offered to help me with interior and engine removal to send the car to a paint shop, lend me some tools etc. There is no reason not to get this car other than my concern about the chassis number.
  9. I had a second look at the car. The inner fenders and the filler hose were correct for a '68 which was a very good sign. What is very concerning is the area around the chassic number on the top of the right fender. To me it looks like it has been cut. Here is the underside where the sheet metal doesn't look leveled.
  10. I contacted with the seller and eventually the inner fenders are the old ones without the vertical wrinkles, so that is a good sign. I'll do some more checks just to be on the safe side. About a 50% of the 02s I see on sale or driving around here have at least changed rear lights/ front grills or both. In this particular case everything was changed so I was a bit worried.
  11. That inner fender difference looks like a good evidence. I can't remember which fenders the car has so I'll have to check that. I'll also check all the other details you mentioned. I found another post about the hood differences which are visible from the inside. Would a front panel change require a hood change too?
  12. Unfortunately I don't have pictures. I'll probably have to check the weldings of the panels and try to spot anything strange around the chassis number.
  13. I was told that changing from round to square lights was common back then. Most early cars I see on sale around here have this modifications but in this particular car everything appears to be changed.
  14. Hello everyone, I'm going to buy my first 02 and I managed to find a nice one for the price I want to pay. According to the VIN, the car is a '68 2002 (LHD, European). The colour and engine are not matching and everything in the car is changed to match the later models (rear lights, front grill, bumpers, dashboard and even the side mouldings. I want to make sure that those were just swaped for esthetic reasons and that the car is not a later model that someone changed the VIN. 1) Is the VIN stamped somewhere else besides the front right side near the windscreen and the plate? 2) Is the VIN location fixed (with accuracy) on all models so that I can measure its distance from the windscreen or something to spot if it was cut and changed? 3) Are there any chassic (or other) details that changed over the years and someone wouldn't change for esthetic reasons? 4) Does anyone have pictures of the original rear square lights panel weldings or the front part weldings so that I can compare them to the car's weldings? (they should not look original if the panel is changed) Any other tips would help. Thank you.
