  1. Hello, and first off, apologies if this isn’t the right place to post this question.

I came across this ad for an 02 for sale. I submitted contact info from the website, but have had no luck with the owner reaching out. I’m not even sure if it’s still for sale. The ad is on Yupyi, which is very unfamiliar to me. Is this ad real? I couldn’t find this posting on any other sites. I am also wondering if the owner is part of this community or if anyone is familiar with the the car. Any info will be helpful thank you all. See below for the post I am referring to.

  2. Amen to that!  Look around on the forum and you'll see much chatter about rear lights - and making them brighter.
One of the discussions is from me, after I got sick of being crunched from behind.

After my 1972 2002 was totaled five times, I invented the upgrade to:
    (A) Be safe by helping sixth and subsequent idiots to avoid crashing into my car again;
    (B) Make the lights in back look bigger, brighter, and easier to see - I boosted brakes, tails, and turns.
© Restore the silvery goodness in the old dull reflectors to project the light outwards instead of just warming up the light and the trunk.

Once you find a 2002 you like, let me know if you need help.  Square or round tails, I can help with either.
BTW- my avatar is my tail light only, no brakes applied.  Twice as big, three times as bright as stock tails when new, ten times better than 50 year old tails!
And when the brakes are on, it's WAY brighter.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck finding a nice car.

Wow, awesome thank you for that piece of knowledge! I will be contacting you. [emoji4]

  3. 02 VINS 101...

If it's a US spec roundie:
    • 166/167xxxx are 68 through about March '71 "early" 2002s--no knee moulding on the sides, "silver dollar" instruments etc
    • 257-259xxxx are "modell 71" cars--knee moulding, black face instruments etc.  later 72s have 4 lever heaters (vs 3) and 73's have the unique, pointy front bumper guards and rear bumpers spaced away from the body.  259xxxx cars are all '73s, as are the higher 258xxxx numbers.
    • 276xxxx are roundie tii's
If you're looking at a squarelight, advise and I can give you a breakdown for them.  74-76 cars use unique beginning 3 digit numbers for each year so are easier to tell apart.

Thank you, Mike. I will look into it as soon as I get the VIN.

Listen to Mike above.  Mike is the man.  Ignore these ridiculous info sources you're using.  Buy the McCarthy book recommended by Simeon in one of your other threads.  Search on this forum, which is far and away the most definitive source of 2002 information.

My old-fart recommendation?  At this point, spend less time dreaming about your customization plans for the car and more time evaluating the car you're about to buy.  Get the best car -- that generally means the lowest rust car -- you can afford.  I'm suspecting -- and I'm admittedly often wrong -- that you haven't owned, driven, and restored a lot of 50 year-old-cars.  If I'm right, you'll want to focus now on the prospective purchase.  After you have a good car -- not one with lots of hidden rust -- you'll have plenty of time to make it the car of your dreams.  Anything is possible.

    Good luck,

    Steve

I will look for that book. It's a great suggestion, thank you.

Buy a car that already has them fitted  [emoji6]

It's a difficult one to answer as it depends upon condition. The 02bumpers are repro in stainless steel, you can buy new chrome by searching around for the different pieces for about the same, maybe less if lucky. After that it's potluck and being in the right place at the right time. If your plans are for a welded set then I would start with rust / dent free set but with buggered chrome. This could be as low as $100 per end.

If only it was that easy [emoji4]

  6. 2002 VINs have only 7 digits, and there is no configuration code hidden in them aside from being able to tell what model the vehicle is. You can email BMW with a VIN (search for the email address in some of Conserv's posts, he must have it memorized by now), and they'll give you the original build date, destination, and paint color. That's all the records that are left of these cars. Carfax will not accept the 7 digit VIN.

Thank you for your response. Is it possible to see if the VIN matches the numbers on the motor?

  7. I am in the same boat as you, looking for a car far from where I live. I am curious as to how you are checking the VIN. I would like to do some research on the car I am looking at as well, but am not sure how to run the VIN. Any suggestions? I would also like to understand how I can check the numbers on the engine to see if it matches the VIN.

  8. Hello everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a car from the east coast. I have talked to the individual by phone. He seems very knowledgeable about the car, explained everything in details, provided pictures for everything and seems to be very reasonable. I probably will not be able to see the car to complete the sale in person.

I want to know what you guys might recommend as the best way to handle a non-face-to-face transaction. What should I look for from your experience? Also, I read here that escrow.com is a good method of completing the transaction. Should that be the best way to send the money? What are your thoughts?

    Thank you in advance!

    Regards,

    DSW

  9. Hello,

Sorry if this might be a newbie question. What are these two rectangular rear lights (shown in the picture)? I see some cars with and some without them. Is it possible to remove them? I personally think it looks much nicer without those lights. Once removed, I imagine there will be holes in place of those lights?

PS: I am currently looking to buy an 02, and do not have my own to remove them and see whats on the other side!

    Thank you,

    DSW

  10. Hi all!

I am in love with this car featured on Stance Works: link

Do you guys have any ideas as to which front and rear bumpers are on this beautiful car? They do not look like the standard euro bumpers. Also, any ideas on where to purchase them and how much they cost?

    Thank you,

    DSW
