  1. Started rebuilding my heater valves as a start to my heater box rebuild. My project car didn't have heater valve, got on off ebay and another in one of the barn find boxes. I had already ordered and received a rebuild kit from Bluntech and one of the valves I have had the broken plastic guts so the Blunt kit fits in there. The other valve has all Brass parts.

Which one of these will work best the plastic or brass innards?

Also I need the seals for the second valve - I have the little one in an o-ring kit but the larger 31mm ID seal - where do you guys find that one?

  2. WIle Motorsport will be hosting a BMWCCA undercarraige event / open house on Saturday May 20th. They are inviting any BMW owners to bring their cars down for a car show at our shop. If you would like to sign up to participate in the undercarraige event please sign up with the BMWCCA Boston chapter.  My '76 project car is being built there. Come on by!

  3. Thanks for the suggestions - On the 45's I was using a tuning chart that said whatever choke you use multiply that by 1.25 to determine the overall carb size - 34 x 1.25 = 42.5. I'm sure either will work and new they are both the same price. That was my thinking anyways. I have a 38/38 that came with the car but my son who builds later model BMW race cars for a living wants to play Old School tuner with Dual Webers.

The 215 Clutch came with the car - can we'll be ok to  start with that while I search for a lightened 228?

We'll keep eye on oil temp and add cooler as needed.

I'll talk to the machine shop about matching the manifold to head.

  4. Hi follks

I've searched and read a lot of great information here and seeking out your suggestions on a few items for my engine build of my new project car. New to the 2002 and M10

Vehicle Objectives - Street legal Gentleman's Time Trial/HPDE car the runs on premium pump gas

    What I have already

block currently bored to 90.127mm, stock crank, H-Beam ConRods, e12 head - Pistons are Mahle 9.5:1 89.97 and whomever built this engine screwed up and I can measure the ring gap with a tape measure.

I have ordered from IE Forged 90.5 pistons at 9.75:1 for the e12 with appropriate custom head gasket. Block will be bored and honed to the pistons. IE Tri-Y Headers with O2 bung. Oil baffles and windage tray, Alum radiator and Elect Fan.

Yet to buy and seek opinions

Dual DCOE 45s with IE intake, Elect Fuel pump and all the connections and hoses. - I will have this on a race track and think I can use the 45's

Valvetrain - IE 292 camshaft with HD rockers and springs, rocker locks and hw. Should I go for the +1mm valves or is stock size ok since the valves are in good shape (head will be machined and valves fresh cut and lapped)

Ignition - no vacuum on the DCOE so do I use the Tii Distributor or 123Ignition?

All new -Poly engine mounts and mount reinforcement, S14 Starter, 320i Alternator, new wiring, water pump, thermostat and hoses

    Am I missing anything?

When I was researching pistons on the FAQ I came across someone mentioning that they used 92 bore in their race engine without issue. So, theoretically you should be able to do that. Not sure if you can go bigger, so maybe you want to do 91 so there's an extra mm there in the future? I almost got these... They might be what you're looking for? http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002-engine/m10forged-custom.html

Thanks for the offer on the 89.97, but kmb02 did provide me with some and I am all set.

IE forged pistons ordered for a 90.5mm bore and 9.75:1 compression.

  6. We are new the 2002 scene - We just tore down the engine on our new project car - pulled E12 head (looked clean with new looking stock HW) and oil pan - found nice H-Beam con rods. Mahle 89.97mm 9.5:1 piano top pistons But the pistons had lots of burned oil- so started taking them out and skirts were burned oil too. Pistons measured out at 89.97- rings looked a little funky but intact. Measured cylinder bore - aver 90.127 with taper of .012mm - but looking at the book piston/cylinder clearance we are way off... book .045 ours .157 - YIKES! That might explain the oil. Put in the piston ring to measure gap with a tape measure :o

So gonna need some new pistons - should I just plan to bore to 91 or 92 mm - get forged pistons for that bigger size and then have them bore the block?

Have a nice set of Mahle 89.97 piano tops gonna be available. :)
