  1. I just performed a CT on my 73, approx 160K, assuming stock, sat for a long time and have known service records up to 100K. I have done nothing to the engine as of yet, haven't checked valve clearances. 1-4 are 145-155-145-142. I'm planning on a 292 cam and dual 40's, daily driver. Any advice, I'm trying to keep the costs down till I can get it road worthy, may keep the 32/36 on till then. I already own 40's from other projects BTW. TIA

  2. Decided to refinish my E21 basket weaves before putting on the new rubber. Stripped, bead blasted, painted and polished the lip. Looks good but I may go with more of a gunmetal color, haven't decided yet. I still have some Urban Grey Metallic left over from my 07 Subaru WRX. Before and after shots.

Total cost per wheel including powdercoating is $260 (not including wheels since they were just sitting around). My guess is there are less expensive vendors available in areas with more shops willing to take this on.
Check the photo below of the tack welded center piece in the barrel. The back side had to be welded and the gap filled in and machine ground to smooth.

I was just out looking at my E30 steelies and the stockers and had the same idea. Being a machinist with access to some really good welders, I may have to come up with a plan. Thanks for the extra photos.

These were built by Stockton Wheels (Stockton CA). They source the barrels and probably any wheel repair and build shop can get them. I've seen barrels online at Summit Racing / Speedway but these were in stock at the shop. Lots of metal added and machining to ensure strength (It weighs 26 lbs).

Those are exactly what I've been trying to find. How much was it to do this and what metal was added other than weld.

  5. What is your thinking for putting in an S14, cool factor, power, BMW originality, 9000 euros can buy a lot of motor. S2000, highly (turboed) modified M10 or E30 M20. All I'm saying is you can do a lot with that kind of money, especially for an engine that may need rebuilding or parts. If money is no object to you, have at'er.

  6. I think any BMW after the E36 is going to be expensive to maintain unless you're a decant backyard mechanic who can take the time to cruise the forums. I am a big fan of the E39 series, especially the 540i, GREAT touring car. Prices around here are way down, don't know about where you are. Find one that's been well maintained and be aware of the big issues, cooling system and A-arm bushings (the famous 50 mph shake). The forums know every little niggle on these cars, they even have a list of common problems and fixes. Prices are actually fairly reasonable, BMW and Pelican parts, if you do the work yourself. I loved my 540, a cow to work on but what a car.

X-drive adds unnecessary complexity where you're from, just added stuff to go wrong. I've heard nothing but horror stories about the X3/5, more time at the dealership than driving.

Uh, so if it were me and I was going funnel the funds to the 02 restoration, I would sell the 320i (which as a rare S package model is potentially more valuable than the 02) to a collector who will gladly restore it so that it can be enjoyed by the community and take the proceeds of the sale to help pay for the 02. That's a rare 320i, just sayin......

I hear where you're coming from but this car is much rougher than it looks. I don't know what they're worth in the US but up here it's worthless, just another beat 320. I can't buy an LSD or 5 speed for what I paid for this car.

Hey and welcome to the community of the BMW wayback machine. Cool 02 but what really intrigues me is the 320i as I think you have just scored one of the elusive "S packages" 320i variants that BMW NA produced as they were at the end of the 320i production (BMW sometimes decks out as a special edition model at the end of production, remember the L7 of the 80s) But anyway, IF you do have one of these 320i S package models, it would be very worthy (collector value $$) of restoration. One of the ways to tell is that it is missing the 320i emblem on the rear and it has (or did have) a front lip spoiler. And do the alloy wheels say BMW on them ?

    Enjoy !

It is definitely an S with everything but the close ratio 5 speed, as far as restoration I have a choice, the 02 or the 320 and I have already made that decision. I suppose the 320 is restorable but around here it's not going to be worth the money thrown at it in the end, unlike the 02. There is a very mint orange 320is in Calgary for $5500 CND, unfortunately it got "sold" before I could look at it, then it showed up again after I bought my 2 cars...oh well, I like the 02.
