  1. Thanks guys. I really want to simply get the water outlet nipple replaced and get everything checked out to see if any of the parts need replacing. I'm not trying to get it to top notch shape, just good enough to throw back on my block and get it running again. Thanks for the advice!

  2. Hey all,

My machinist successfully removed the water outlet (which had broken off) from my recently purchased (used) 1984 E12 replacement head, which will go onto my M10 engine. I now need a replacement water outlet nipple (see pics).

I'm trying to find one online but, I don't know the exact make and model this '84 E12 head came from or the exact specs.

Does anyone know or have a spare?

    Thanks,

    Christian

  3. Nope, not missing anything. I was just saying you need to put the engine somewhere to work on it. If you aren't doing the work yourself then go behind a grocery store or someplace like that and find yourself a wooden palette and strap it on there, that way it won't roll around the back of your truck and two guys can easily carry it without getting their hands dirty when you unload it.

    Brilliant! Thanks FunkyLaneO!

  4. @@gregmharrison, I plan on pulling up my engine using a hoist. However, I'm sure I can learn a lot by helping you drop yours down. let me know when you plan on doing so to coordinate. my email chjeria@gmail.com

Don't you already have the head off the engine? if so then it makes it pretty easy since both the manifolds are out of the way and it is not top heavy. You can detach it from the tranny and pull it right out, just find a couple good mounting points on the block. remove the radiator so you don't accidentally smash it and go slowly.

You will need an engine stand, you can borrow/rent one or just buy one at harbor freight, with a coupon they are about $40. When you put the engine back in, don't put the distributor back in until the engine is firmly mounted (I have seen more than one smash against the firewall)

I am sure others will have plenty of tips, It seems intimidating but it is actually pretty easy just go slowly and carefully and don't force anything that doesn't seem like it should be forced and everything should be fine.

Yes the head is off at the machinist getting rebuilt. If I decide to pull head off myself (vs having my mechanic do it) I might just skip the engine stand and just use a hoist instead, where I would wheel it over to a truck bed and take to the machinist. Unless I'm missing something and I can pull the engine using an engine stand?

  5. Thanks guys, I'll need to rent a hoist. I'm working in a small shared garage space so I'll need to work quickly preferably in one weekend to not disturb others. My questions mostly surround how to use the hoist, where to attach/hook the hoist to the engine and where to unbolt the engine from (the frame of the car). Any tips or a good video would be extremely helpful.

    Thanks all,

    C

  6. Hello follow Bay Area 02er’s!

Need help pulling your 02 engine?

I’m a newbie looking to learn how to pull out a BMW 2002 engine. If you live within a 50 mile radius of San Francisco and need help pulling your engine, I’m willing to help you out in exchange for the experience. I also need to pull the engine out of my 02 and I'm eager to learn what it takes to do so.

    PM me if interested.

    Cheers,
    Christian

  7. Thanks FunkyLaneO

I just WD-40'd the cylinder wall and cleaned it up as much as possible. I don't see any serious pitting going on (see image).

Is there anything I can do to ensure no further rust or pitting to occur? Would lube help?

    Thanks.

    C

  8. Lastly, what is the best machine shop in San Francisco for the assembly?

Hi Inka, did you find a reliable machine shop in or around San Francisco? I also live in SF and I need to have my cylinder head and engine rebuild. Thanks.

  9. Thanks for the input Mike!

Take it to a machine shop and ask them to check it out to include magnafluxing. I saw you are in the Bay Area. I'm positive there are machine shops in the area that know the M10. Asking a machinist is the only way to be certain the block is ok.

Does taking the engine block to a machine shop involve me taking out the engine from the bay? From my understanding, machine shops are not mechanics and they wouldn't bother removing the engine block, correct? I'm also trying to cut back on labor costs when possible.

    Thanks!

  10. Hello 02'ers,

I managed to get the cylinder head out of my 75 '02 (it's a '76 - E12 head). It's cracked pretty bad and not worth repairing, according to many folks here and a local machine shop I asked (previous post http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/153671-one-crack-in-head-pics-worth-saving/)

I can buy a used head for about 500 bucks and simply replace the old head, but I feel like i should really assess the condition of the block.

Any tips on what to look at when assessing the condition of the pistons in the block? Basically, how do I know if it needs to be rebuilt?

    Thanks for all your help!

    C
