  1. Yeah, if you're frugal and do the work yourself as low as $1K...Retail parts and labor probably $4-5K. I thought an M2 swap was $6-10K diy?

    M2 or M42? A decent condition, semi-high mileage S14 is at lease $5000 alone.

Didn't look to see when the thread was from. Ignore my former comment.

  2. Hey guys,

My car has E21 Recaros swapped into it. The driver's side seat seems to sit just a little bit lower (~1") than the passenger's side; and I'd like my driver's seat to be just as high as the passenger's for better driving position. Any ideas as to why this may be, and what I can do about it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

  3. I've been daily driving (for the most part) with DCOEs since around '07. I often switch back and forth between the 02 and my truck and motorcycle though, and put the 02 away when salt is on the road.

It's pretty uneventful for the most part. It fires up pretty easy (just pump the gas and it goes) and idles relatively smooth every day. Maybe not perfect if you get it out of tune (but well driveable). I've had a few hiccups when my fuel level was a little off, but once I figured out how to set that properly it was great. I had my pump jet o-rings go out at some point too, but those were probably 30 years old and rotten, and real easy to replace.

Edit: Oh, and had some issues with throttle linkages that were poorly built. Now that I have the top mount linkage from IE, I'm pretty confident that it's working great and holds up much better.

It's mostly just fun being a jackass and spinning the tires taking off at every stop. We have a lot of brick streets here, and I can drift all over without squealing. I would say the biggest problem is trying to resist being an idiot with them.

Mileage isn't too bad actually, for being an old sloppy carbed car. I get anywhere from 21 MPG around town, to 27+ MPG on the highway.

Sounds good. I can't wait to get my engine all sorted and rebuilt with 40s.

  4. I did for years. 40's. Don't remember the specs. 125 mains? 121ti head with ti pistons 9.7:1? Isky copy of the BMW sport 300 cam. Would pull over 6k in 4th with a 3.64 rear. A big part is getting the idle jet size right. Then venturies and mains. And air corrector........

If the weather was better I could easily daily drive my 912 with 40IDF's. It has .060 idle jets 34mm venturies 125main 180 air corrector. That's on a 1600. Idles all day and can lug through traffic.

Nice - I have a 3.64 open diff and E21 5 speed. I think they'll be put on when the motor is rebuilt - whoever does it will be a professional and have experience doing them so they're properly set up. I'm planning 9:5:1 pistons and a 292 cam. Should be a quick little car by next spring.

  5. Oh man, it looks mint! PO did some great mods, looks like you have an ANSA exhaust there? Love the bumpers/light setup too, and the Watanabe style wheels are always a good choice. Looks a lot better than my car did when I first got it. Congrats!

Edit: The other kids in your high school probably lost their minds when you pulled up in that thing!

Haha, I actually can't drive to school until next year: I'm 15, not quite 16. Yeah, the POs have done some nice mods; the exterior is just part of it. I love the Kamei spoiler look; I got SO lucky to find a car with one. Panasports are great too; but I'll probably put 15" wheels on there at some point. Ansa muffler, but it has a leak. Engine has 32/36 downdraft weber; but I'm going to have it rebuilt next winter with some mods because the piston rings are worn. E21 5 speed. Stock differential; which will be replaced with a 3.91 when engine is rebuilt. Larger diameter sway bars, Bilstein HDs, unknown sport springs. E21 recaros and sport steering wheel; interior is kinda worn but that'll all be taken care of in time. Some mice got into the car this past winter when the PO had it in storage, so I need to figure out how to get the piss smell out. I've gotten most out, but not all. Not a big deal. (Any tips, guys?) Euro turn signals. Rear bumper conversion. Below the belt line trim is Chamonix and above is Alpine white - I plan on making it all Chamonix and removing belt line trim. I think that's about it, haha.

Overall, I really love my car. I drove it for the first time this past weekend (this is my second week with the car; dad has been driving me around in it so I can get my fix) and it's so much fun. I can't wait to really get the modifications going; I have a long list of parts to order for the future.

  6. Awesome! Congrats on the purchase, and here's to many great years of ownership. I've had my fair share of problems over the years, but it has only made me love the car more. Treat it well and it will treat you well. I've had mine since I was 19 (24 now) and can't imagine parting with it.

And Chamonix for the WIN! Would love to see pics!

Yeah, my car needs some work; something that I'm more than willing to put in. I love it so far. Probably won't ever part with it, to be honest. Here are pics: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/gallery/album/251-first-pics-of-the-02/

  7. 40mm vs 45mm

If you want high rpm power 45's are better, but you will probably lose a little of the snappy performance at low rpm and the turning is a bit more touchy.  40's are snappy around town and probaly best for most street cars but run out of breath on the track.  The best dual carb for a warm street engine is the discontinued Weber 42 but they are hard to find.  I have also had good luck with Mikuni 44's but they are not made any more either.

At the risk of a controversy --  We often suggest the weber 38 down draft as it will out run 40's on the track and be almost as good at street speeds.

Are they really about the same output? (38/38 vs DCOE)

  8. My car is a 1974 automatic and as far as I know, it still has the stock sway bars. They measure 15mm in the front and 16mm in the rear, In the front I put my jack in the center of the front subframe. I put a piece of wood, maybe 12" long between the jack and subframe to help distribute the weight. Do not put jack on oil pan. In the rear, I place my jack under the differential with a piece of wood again. Put a jack stand under the frame rails in the front and subframe in the rear, in front of the rear wheels before you crawl under the car.

Thank you - I need to get some jack stands. I'll also get some planks. I forgot about the jack stands - something that could really save me if something happened with the jack.

  9. Do a megasquirt conversion to a stock M10 and see how you like it. When it becomes boring, turbo it. I'm betting it won't. Oh.... Did anyone mention that brakes make a car go faster? So do tires, wheels, springs, sway bars, shocks, etc.. Spread the wealth for a balanced package. You shouldn't go apeshit with any one thing. You really don't need 250-300 hp. You might want it, but you don't need it.

Heck, forget everything I said above and just bolt on a 38/38 Weber and call it a day. The most fun per dollar mod you can make.

How does the 38/38 compare to DCOEs? I've been told they make about the same power. Also, regular or "double pumper" - which is better?
