What is the VIN?
Have you started by searching on the VIN? If you have no hits on Google, in most states, with a VIN, you can find out if a car is registered. Some DMV’s can provide the name and address of the owner if it is registered, or simply in its database. Some cannot, while some cannot provide the name and address through the DMV, but can provide the name and address if a request is filed under the Freedom of Informatiom Act (FOIA).
If the car has left Tennessee, you may be SOL, unless you want to file DMV requests in a number of the most likely new residence states.
The first thing I would do, besides this present thread — which will disappear from regular view in a day or two — is to make a listing in this forum’s Registry (select Browse / Registry / Enter new vehicle). You will need the VIN to list the car. Post photos of the car on the listing and say, in the text, that you are looking for the car. Put your forum username in the listing. It will take all of one minute to do this and will leave a record that is much more visible than a discussion thread.
Good luck,
Steve
Esty - I just PMd Les Cartwright. We’ll see what he says. Thanks!
Steve - yes sir I’ve searched the VIN in various search engines only to receive lackluster results. I’ve also posted on CL (no VIN) and my buddy is posting it on the local Old Hickory BMW CCA FB page.
I’ve been told, for a buck, you can go to the county clerks office and they can look up the registration IF it’s in the county. It may not be, but my buyer said he sold it to someone local so it’s worth investigating.
That all being said I will definitely take your advice and list her in the registry. A tremendous idea I had no idea about. Killer suggestion and you have my thanks!!!

Thanks Rob. Turning over every stone to locate her and hopefully get back to work. ??

Yes you did! I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed her. I’ve regretted letting her go for years but I’m earnestly working to return to the stock job I was working toward. My buyer has contacted me and is looking for their buyer so hopefully that will produce some leads. It’s good to hear from you!

Price: $100Location: Murfreesboro, TN
Description:
Hello there, perhaps you’ve seen my old 02 that I’d like to be reunited with?
She’s a ‘72 2002 that I owned from 2010 till 2015. I moved across country and was unable to bring her with me so I sadly had to sell her - a decision I’ve deeply regretted for quite some time. A gentleman in Lebanon, TN purchased her and held on to the car till 2018 then sold it to an individual residing here in middle TN. Since then she’s pretty much disappeared. I’ve contacted the person who bought her from me but haven’t received a reply. I’ve also checked with my 02 contacts here in TN and they’re scratching their heads on this one - the consensus is they’d probably be aware of her if it is still in the area.
If you have any details, even minor, I’d appreciate you hitting me up. Any little shred of information may help in solving this mystery. Thanks for reading.

i forgot to mention that if this actually works, I'd gladly pay $60 than over 2K somewhere down the line for replacement aluminum...
i called the guys over at Blunt Tech today and they weren't really aware of the stuff....so...anyone???
-
Has anyone tried this stuff? The trim on my 02 is in good shape...it's just foggy and oxidized. The description reads :
Restore oxidized aluminum trim. Simply wet sand using included remover and 2000 grit paper, then use the flow-on applicator to apply the water-based coating. Oxidized look disappears, leaving a shiny, anodized aluminum finish. Comes with instructional video.
It's also rather pricey for 2000 grit paper and some kind of cleaner/sealant. Just wondering if anyone's had experience with this.
Thanks!

Ok audio experts...I need help identifying the model of Blau in my 02. It isn't original to my car...i actually found it in the trunk of a 02 in this BMW graveyard out near Carthage, TN. That said, i was pleasantly surprised everything works, got it for a steal and the knobs (though admittedly a little chewed up) match all my other knobs.
So, any ideas on the model and anything else folks might wanna share?
Thanks in advance!

I had similar issues on my '72 and just fixed it this week. My blinkers and tail lights worked but using them would spike my temp gauge to the max. However, it also ended up disabling my horn which makes me think it might be related. See my thread here: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,356527/start,0/postdays,0/postorder,asc/highlight,/
Good luck!

I just did this today and posted with pics here

Weeks have passed and I've been addressing issues in my original post and it SEEMS that everything has been resolved for now. I'll address them one by one as originally posted.
1. Jumpy gauges/No horn - I gotta start this off by giving a big, big thanks to Phil here in Nashville for coming over yesterday and showing me how to pull the instrument cluster. We pulled it yesterday and cleaned all the connections but it was not much better than it was before. Today I built a Y shaped wiring harness (thank you so much to Mike who took the time to email me specific directions on doing this) and attached it beneath the slotted nuts on the back of the cluster. I then ran that ground wire to the body of the car above the pedals. Problem solved! No jumpy gauges, horn is back to sounding, lights are brighter. Awesome! I took pictures of it all because for newbies like me it's good to see it all step by step and they will be included in this post.
2. Starter issue - Like so many of you said previously the bushings were shot. The awesome guys at Todd's here in Nashville by the Tennessee Titans stadium rebuilt it and it's started like a champ since!
3. Interstate fear and loathing - This is something that I just have to get past. I have noticed at very high RPMs my telltale light coming on and I thought the belt was slipping but I'll recheck this as soon as I can after my fixes today.
Also thanks to all the nashville gang for stepping in to say hello. It's great to know there are other folks out there in this neck of the woods. Thank you so much to everyone who gave me feedback!
The thumb nuts for the gauge cluster are waaay back in there so reach for these guys pictured and start lefty looseying.
There's two thumb nuts and this is the second that's just over to the left of the first one. In the photo bottom right you'll see the speedometer plug that needs to also be unscrewed to get the gauges out. ok, just pull the gauge cluster forward and it should come forward just a bit but it's not going to come completely out due to the ground wire and the electrical plug that are still attached to the back of the instrument panel. If you're sitting in the drivers seat the ground is closest to your right hand so just slip your hand in there and unplug that. On the other side of the gauge is the electrical plug (the 12 pronged plug seen in the photo) and you can just unplug that too so that the whole piece comes out (when you plug this back in its tooled to only go back in one way so it might take a second to get the plugs back in the right way). T
This is the cluster once it's been pulled. See the next photo for Y harness application.
Make a Y shaped wiring harness (i used 16 gauge wire) and attach behind the two slotted nuts behind the fuel and temp gauges. The other end should be poked though and run to the body of the car above where your feet are. I chose a spot that's already been drilled out. See next..
That should be it! That's how I solved my jumpy gauge problem.
And since I'm new here and slightly proud this is my 02.

Alright, David and Mike both nailed the starter issue. Bushing housing was shot = dragging starter. Fortunately that is now fixed.
Now with the jumpy gauges, Phil here in Nashville has kindly offered to walk me through it! More to come there.
Thank you everyone for your input! This place is insanely amazing.

Many, many thanks to everyone who chimed in about the issues I'm facing. I certainly have some new things I'm going to look at. I have the day off so I'm going to dig into the starter issue first and then tackle what seems to be a electrical connection cleaning and ground checking and possibly adding session. As for the freeway...I'm just gonna let her go and keep an eye on my rpms.
As soon as I tackle these I'll report back. Thanks again everyone and I'll shoot an email to a few of you personally.
David
p.s. david - I live in East Nashville and my '72 is red. I'm not a CCA member but it is on my list of things to do!

Hi everyone, long time reader but first time posting. I've owned my 02 for about 6 months and have had relatively good luck with fixes here and there but I'm truly stumped about a few things. Sure, I could take it in to my mechanic but I made a deal with myself when I bought it that I would use my elementary automotive skills to try and figure things out. I'm about at my breaking point.
First problem that is really driving me crazy: Whenever I tap my brakes, turn on my lights, use my blinkers or sound the horn it makes my temp gauge in the cluster top out or at least climb drastically (if the engine is cool - when it's warm it tops out). When the blinker is on the temp gauge actually bounces with the clicking of the blinker. To me this feels like it is all tied together. Sometimes I'll hit the horn and I just hear a break in the sound on my radio. Sometimes it works just fine - but they are more likely to work if the lights are off.
Second problem that makes me crazy: On a cold start the engine cranks right up and I just have to pull the choke a little bit. However if I drive it a few miles after that and shut the car off to get coffee when I get back the car cranks very slowly like it might not start (a good 5 seconds) and then all the sudden cranks.
Now, all this said I've done a few things to try and solve the problem. At first I changed my volt regulator out. Then I had my alt checked and it had bad diodes. So I had that fixed and reinstalled it. So now I think that my starter might need refurbishing to fix this problem. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone else?
The third thing is kindof a dumb one: I'm kinda paranoid to take my 02 on the interstate because when I'm in fourth I feel like the engine is REALLY loud and I'm doing it a disservice. I'd like to really stretch its legs on the freeway but the engine noise just freaks me out. Now, this is coming from a guy who's always owned modern cars so maybe I'm just too paranoid or green at this.
In addition, anyone who lives near Nashville who is a fellow enthusiast...please let me know. Its nice to know fellow owners around and I feel like the only one down here. Thanks to anyone in advance for insight on these troubling issues.

Thanks again Les. I PMd you the license plate I had that I passed to Joe when I sold it in 15. Not sure if he used it - I thought it was cool. And the current owner - who knows? ??♂️
