Have you bled from the bottom up, as suggested/demonstrated by BillWilliams? That's supposed to be the best method to make sure you don't have air in the lines. A search oughta find the post(s)

The bosch blue has an internal resistor.....

Is the linkage operating properly?

My wife always said she loved the 2002 look and wanted one. So, being the good husband I am (ahem), I found one and purchased it for her 40th birthday. It needed work, but was very driveable after the basic maintenance required from every 34 year old, neglected car. My plan was to slowly fix and replace until she had a solid DD. Guess how long her patience lasted? One breakdown and one nose-crunch later, she decided modern conveniences were her thing and she threw the '02 under the proverbial bus. Man, WHO could have seen that coming? Anyway, now I have the 2002 I've always wanted and the suspension is finished, engine done (installation as soon as it warms up) and it'll be my DD! Of course, I have a shitload of money into it...more to follow I'm sure, but since I've spent so much already, I think I'll multitask some cash and give her that set of 15x7 minilites she's always wanted for Christmas! I'll update you on how that went over after I find an apartment and get a computer.

How about in the future? I WILL have mine as my DD next spring.....it only needs an engine and 1 seat! I'll call that a yes

Now that's a useful reply. I now know at least 2 things to check out before I try to fire it up. Also, interestingly, there was a recent thread about jetting from someone else with a 292 (although he had a Weber 38) and through careful adjustment and rejetting the idles, he was able to get smooth idle with the 292. Just a thought....I'm sure I'll have many more musings as I attempt the starter-upper-thingy.

If you're trying to save money, replacing the ring gear is definitely the way to go. Lots of threads describing it...

Dude, if they are original, you can probably put your finger through them. If oil-soaked, they'll be even worse. New ones are less than $40 each and well worth the cash.

Well, my son and I got the transmission mated to the engine yesterday. Almost 1 year to the day after pulling it, I'm ready to put it back in. Had to make the bracket to hold the clutch master to slave line (hope it fits in the tunnel) and figure out how the hell the shifter platform attaches. Also, I used Lee's brackets and very good instructions to get the transmission mounting tabs set up. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that's definitely a different flywheel than my non-tii 74. I seem to remember somebody saying a while back that dowels between the bolt holes was the hallmark of the flywheel for the 215mm clutch and the other was the 228.
Anyway, I figured out that the holes for the dowels on my NEW sachs clutch were not the right size. It wasn't a tight fit, it just wasn't a fit. I drilled them to 1/4" and they fit perfectly and snugly. Strange, but I also once bought an oil filter without threads in it, so i suppose mistakes happen. Clutch all fit up and tranny attached! After the ice storm tonight dissipates, I see a 2002 with engine installed!

I'm only confused because what I thought was the dowel centering hole is too small for the dowel. All the other holes fit the dowel, but obviously the bolt holes don't match the flywheel there......Is this a shop mistake and the dowel holes were supposed to be larger? I'm gonna drill them out.

This whole problem is my fault, and I knew it had to be when the Haynes manual said, "Align clutch with marks made at disassembly". Right, I made marks when i disassembled it. Anyway, it seems to me that there are only 2 possibilities for installation (plus 3 positions for each possibility so I suppose 6) which would be 1) Dowel in center hole on clutch tabs or 2) dowel unused in between tabs. 1 seems like the only viable option because of the need for clutch alignment, etc but the center holes on the clutch tabs aren't big enough for the dowels. EVERY other hole works, but the center one is just barely too small. Am I smoking crack? Do I have to drill that sucker so they fit the dowels or am I totally misinterpreting this install?
Thanking you....

Thanks, I'll post pics when I get it ready to mount up. Hopefully, clarity will hit me along the way!

Yeah, that's the only conclusion I can come up with. It's an odd way to get a rubber mount though.....wouldn't a simple bolt through the back of the platform with a sturdy rubber grommet accomplish the same task? Guess those Germans are smarter than me, or willing to tackle a simple task with a needlessly complex solution.

There's gotta be an answer. Probably obvious to everyone but a tard like me.

In response to my previous post, you said you had installed the Ireland shifter platform. Now that I'm preparing for install, i realized I have a question and perhaps you are the man for an answer. How do you attach the aft mount? If yours is the same as mine, it's a bracket bolted to another bracket mounted to a rubber piece (I hope the picture is clear). Do you bolt the aft-most bracket (the black one) to the tunnel and then bolt the brackets together (like the last picture)? Is the rubber piece the only thing attaching the brackets to the platform? The Ireland ad says the rear mount is rubber to keep shock to a minimum......so do the tabs on the rear mount fit under the shift platform and squeeze it up against the tunnel, with the protruding rubber squooshed appropriately? Am I even remotely clear? Thanks for any help you have.

I gather, from searching, that a Bavaria speedometer cable is a workable solution for the 5 speed conversion, and cheaper than the 2002 automatic cable. Cool, but I naturally have questions....because apparently that's what I do. Anyway, are all Bavaria cables created equally? It appears the part number is the same for the different Bavarias and model years so that means no diff, right? Or am I missing something? Also, has anyone done this before? Is it a direct bolt-on? No fab or rigging required makes me smile.

Just got the transmission brackets, they are works of art. I hope to put them in tomorrow and I'll post pics of the mount. Again thanks, that was a pretty elegant solution to the 5 speed problem. I'll feel better without my transmission mount essentially being a fulcrum like these brackets are.

looks like a 4 speed.....

I use the steel line for gas feed (under driver's side) and the old fuel feed line (plastic inside pax side) for the vent. It still opens into engine compartment....hope it never blows up (jk)

yes...don't forget the tank vent.

It's called shimming and it's normal. No problems will crop up unless you're talking about 3.5 inches of shimming.....that would be called spacing
