  1. Just today I picked up two M10 engines. A 316 and a 318 engine. I plan to rebuild the 318 and takes parts and experiment on the 316. I plan to swap the 318 into my 02 so I can then rebuild the 02 M10 slowly and thoroughly with my learnt skills form the 318. This way my 02 is never dead weight for more than a week :)

Can anyone recommend good books and/or websites for rebuild engines?

What new parts a mandatory in your opinion?

Any advice for a begginer is very welcome!

  2. I just bought a 316 engine for $20 ($10us). The cam is the same part number as that from the 318.

Can I use this cam in my 02 engine? I assume the only diference is it is designed to spin the dizzy in the oposite direction. This does not bother me because I have EDIS wasted Spark. Will this work?

  3. I got some low impedance injectors from a volvo turbo but i never ran with them. You can run these injectors with software settings or resistors. I bought the resistors but then decided before I embark on a turbo project I will spend atleast one summer using rather then building he car. Obviously this is not 02 unique. Have a search through www.msefi.com . This forum should provide all the details you need.

I prefer the idea of using resitors. That way when things go wrong the problem is tangable. ie. the resistors is burnt.

  4. Your mystery oil probably ended up in the exhaust where it starts to smoke when the exhaust gets hot. Just run it for some time.

I ran oil through the cylinders on my car when it had sat for quite some time. The oil took a LONG time to completetly burn from the exhaust. Have you ever spilt a tiny bit of oil on the exhaust manifold. lots of smoke for quite some time.

symtoms were: no smoke when the car was cold. Plenty (as in street engulfing) when the car warms up.

    good luck

  5. It really does sound like your fuel pump is not producing enough pressure...

Have you installed megalogviewer onto your laptop so you can view any strange occurances such as temprature spikes due to radio interferecne.

What did you change before it started to fail?

  6. Overhauling the brakes is probably a good idea when your car is this old. I opted for the big brake conversion which made things a tab more complicated but im happy with the results.

You my find you just need new brake hoses. Sometimes the hoses swell and trap the fluid in the caliper affectively leaving the brake on. And the pressure problem may just require a bleed. I usualy (budget allowing) use failures (poor brakes, bad dizzy etc) as an oportunity to upgrade.

but i think you will find hoses and bleeding will cure your problems, you would need to replace hoses and fluid no matter which option you take.

  7. Hey Guys

I have just glued my ford excort trigger wheel to my spare M10 pulley. Although I am very happy with the job I have done I cant help but think that the pulley ay be unbalanced.

How many of you who have done the megasquirt 36-1 pulley had there pulley balanced?

How many have not? Does it really matter?

  8. Hey

Its been a while but I purchased

    MSII

    V3.0 board

    stimulater (is a MUST)

    relay board (optional but recomended)

    db37 cable

If you search the internet you should also be able to find spreadsheets full of bosch injector flow rates. I found some 216cc/h@3bar injectors in an old puegot that I ended up using inplace of the original 318 bmw ones. thats about 20% larger than the original bmw ones, which helps because the 2002 engine is about 10% larger..

We could really use a bmw m10 megasquirt cook book FAQ article considering how many 02 guys attempt this conversion. I really enjoyed it when I went through it. infact im collecting parts for my next step (EDIS, wideband, megaview)

  9. I was reading through this great thread

    http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,43986/highlight,530+starter/

after doing a search for the 530 starter upgrade which i stumbled on elswhere..

I then logged onto realoem.com and looked up part numbers..

I found these matching parts. (there are probably more but im working)

Can anyone verify this? will any m30 starter then fit the m10? could it be that simple?

  10. Im not getting a reply from we either of these companies.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good place to order trigger wheels from.

Im not really interested in dealing with companies that are slack, esp when I live Down-Under.

  11. Could you tell em about what type of pads I need to ask for to reduce the grip of the rear brakes? Or point me to a resource for where brake ratings/pad materials are explained in detail?

As a hair brained scheme I was thinking of installing a brake pressure regulator from a 318 or 320 or any other euro I find at the wreckers.

A regulater allows a certain amount of pressure to the rears then cuts off the supply forcing all higher pressure to the front.
