the roll pin is broken and the end of the pinion shaft which is about half and inch in diameter is snapped just below the role pin the whole end is slid out in this picture and is rubbing on the ring gear. evrytime the ring gear does a full revolution the piece thats riding against it grinds the pinion gear.
