  1. So I bought a '76 from CA last year, and I'm in the process of replacing the transmission.

When driving it last summer it felt just bogged down, like it did not want to rev. The engine has been rebuilt recently, FYI.

The exhaust has three components as shown in the photos, one of which looks like a small cat... has anyone seen one like this? Could it be holding back the engine a bit?

My thoughts are to replace it with an Ireland Engineering SS version to let it breath better.

  2. My 2002 came to me with a bad 4 speed and am getting ready to pull it and replace it with a 5 speed.

Here is how I have my 2002 positioned on blocks and jack stands. The front is bearing on the jack stands on the frame rails, the extra two jack stands under the cross member in front are backups.

What else should I do to make it as safe as possible? Thank you in advance for the advice.

  3. I picked up a 2002 last week (first one in 20+ years). First gear is making a whine/rattle noise and I've already purchased a 5 speed for the conversion over the winter.

The question is this... does driving it right now hurt any other part of the transmission or driveline?

I get out of first ASAP. The other gears work fine with no noise. It shifts into all gears fine by the way.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Define nice 🙂  They all need to be reupholstered by now.  BTW this still has the BMW roundel under the headrest.

It is however the famous SPORT seat and is correct for a 2002. You will need to find a driver seat though.

Thanks, but looking for a set.
