    Thank you for the photos.

I see that they are from a 'later' e21, since they spin counter clockwise; which makes the one in the first photo a vacuum advance unit.

Im still learning, never had an m10 before so I have no idea lol.  Appreciate the info

  2. sooo, I picked up that engine in Chicago today.

Seemed like a decent deal for everything included.

It came with Megasquirt v3,  Boost bros manifold, A Garrett Gt2860rs, Looks like the whole wiring harness, fuses, coil, a couple distributors, It does indeed have Arp head studs and an Mls headgasket which really makes me wonder if they ended up going forged pistons and rods.

A brand new Gt2860rs cost more then what I paid for the whole package and an ms3 is around 675 prebuilt plus a harness so I feel like I made out really well.

I have a lot of rust repair to do before I even think about dropping this in so it will probably be awhile before I get her running, bare with me lol.

  3. I started stripping all the old black crap out today.

Dry ice worked great.  I made two piles and would alternate back and forth between the two spots allowing the dry ice to freeze everything underneath while I chipped away at the other spot.

No expert here, but $900. sounds like a lot. Are you planing to turbo ? Or did the ad just give you the idea.

    Here's one for $300.

    https://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/pts/d/bmw-m10-18l-engine/6521199218.html

If you don't mind where in Michigan are you ? I'm by 49004

Im in Lansing so not too far from you.

Im not sure what these go for thats why I'm asking.  I think a lot of it has to do with the Megasquirt, Garret gt28 (disco potato), comes with the harness, fuel rail, injectors,  If you look closely at the head it looks like it has Arp headstuds and from a different picture you can see the tabs from what looks like an MLS headgasket.  I think the turbo manifold is like $100

The seller isn't sure if it has a built bottom end or what he got it with his e21 and another m10 so he's selling this one and keeping the other.  Also correct me if im wrong but isn't it a 2.0 since it has dual timing chain which means a forged crank?  Im still learning

I was going to put the m42 out of my 318is into it and have JakeB turbo turbo it for me, we had already spoke.  Then my buddy found this and said if I was going to boost it then this could potentially be a great deal.

so thats where I am at lol

Well it is certainly interesting.   With engine out and valve cover loose, I have to wonder why.   If the seller has a video of the engine running and can verify that it was running well when pulled, then it would be a pretty good deal.  If he blew something up and pulled the engine to replace it, not so much.

Edit: I re-read the whole comment above.   A guy is selling an engine that he bought but never used and he doesn't really know anything about it?  I would pass.   Those eBay turbocharge kits are pretty scary from my perspective.   Without a chain of custody (i.e. receipts), I would assume he got taken and is trying to make some money back.   Ask him for reciepts and if he has heard the engine running.

he bought an e21 and it came with the two engines.  The engine im referring to doesn't look like the head has been ran yet.  The guy just told him it was built for boost.

I picked my touring up for less then 6k and its a lhd 5 speed.  most of them are rhd that are coming into the states.   lol that dude on eBay is on drugs.

There is an awd white 5 speed for sale in Ohio for like 10k.

  6. Also do you guys think this is a good deal.  He's doesn't know anything about the bottom end came with his e21.

Looks like arp studs and maybe hd rockers.

Looks like ms1 or ms2, harness, boost brothers manifold for $900

He said it hasn't been ran yet was told it was built for boost.  Kind of a gamble

    Thanks

Something tells me that isn't just a sepia filter on those photos...? Seriously though, I admire your can-do attitude regarding this one. It will be a fantastic educational project and when it is done your level of satisfaction will be that much greater for it. Hope you are able to get her looking like new again.

I really appreciate it.  I hope I can Get her looking new again too lol.  Ill try my best.

I'll take the Z.  Been looking for the right one to restore for over 2 years.   ....But I would ERALLY like to have that E30 wagon on the other side of the fence.   BMW wagons are the most misunderstood cars in the history of BMW, but I love them.   From the drivers's seat foward, they are sedans, but they can haul anything and as a bonus, cops think they are pokey dad-mobiles!  I've owned....4 or 5 BMW wagons including my current E61 535ix.

240Z !!!! heck, they arrived rusting in the US.  Rumor is Datsun loaded them on open ships and the salt spray got them rusting before they hit the west coast.

Cool car, for sure.. lots of potential fun with their in-line 6 and triple Webers :)

haha Ive heard that rumor as well.  finding a rust free example in the midwest is next to impossible.  Rust free good condition 240z are now up to 20-30k

I actually have two i'm working on, a 260 and 240.  Didn't intend for it to happen but the 240z shell popped up and then an ls6/t56 popped up for super cheap so I decided to build that from the ground up and i'm about to sell the 260z actually.

The 260z still has the straight 6 but its out of the 280zx turbo, we are actually about to fire it up for the first time in the next week or so.  I was supposed to this last weekend but my buddy had some family medical issues or something.

I wish I would have went the tripple route, it would have been running a long time ago lol.

Im going with double Mikuni 44s on my Roadster, Ive never worked on carbs or had a car with carbs so I figured it would be cool to build something and learn.

Yikes.... That'll be a handful of rust repair.  The grills are still good, don't mess them up with the wonky hood :)

Its about time I learn how to replace floors and stuff anyways,  at least I won't be afraid to mess anything up while I learn how to weld on this pile lol.

Too late now, but never buy a car unless you get it inspected or, if you are car savvy, can inspect it yourself.  I have a national trade account with an inspection company because I inspect so many cars all over the country in an effort to find decent ones.  Seriously, last year I had 6 different Mercedes 280SLs inspected that were in the $50k-75k price range.  Not one of them came back as a C or better on an A-F scale.  In other words, they were all 4s or worse..  Sellers represented most of them as 2s.  Images were doctored or in most cases the issues were cleverly omitted from the images or discussion. The ones that sellers said were 3 were the ones my inspector said to run away from fast.

And that doesn't even count the scam artists that consistently list cars and parts that don't exist.  "Oh, yes I'm a Leutenant in the Ait Force who is transferring out and I have already gotten the car prepped to ship....just send me the money via, you know, totally untracable Western Union, and the shipper will drop it at your door right away!"   Some of these guys even have phony auctions and phony dealer web sites!   All it takes to stop them is to ask for a copy of the title.

The good news for you is 1) you actually got a car. 2) you found this site.   Here you will get good advice, good instructions, a lot of inspiration and (usually) reasonably priced parts because most of us really want to keep these cars alive at least as much as we might want to make a few bucks selling our old parts.

Honestly, of all the cars I've owned and all the car support sites I've subscribed to, this one is absolutely the best.

All that said, getting a title can be a challenge depending on what state you live in.  But if you need parts, be sure to list it in the "want to buy" section before going to eBay or elsewhere.  Many of us still have the dirty-but-working parts replaced as part of our restorations.

I would say im typically car savy lol.  Would they have been honest with me and told me the car came from Michigan I would have expected a lot of rust, I was really hoping it was a southern car.  I don't buy enough cars to have pay an inspection company.  only a few a year.  If I was looking at more expensive cars then it would be a must.  luckily I just buy $1000-2000 rust buckets.  I really wasn't looking for an 02 it just popped up in Georgia for a good price and ive always wanted one.  I have a few other projects im working on at the moment so I was just hoping the 02 was little less of a project lol.

Im building an ls6 240z from the ground up so thats taking most of my money right now, was hoping I could pull the m42 out of my 318is to put in the 02 sooner rather than later but looks like thats going to be put off for awhile.

Michigan is pretty easy to get a title in although I think they did just change the laws so I might have to get it bonded first before I can get a title.

    I appreciate the help

Sorry to read about your car.  Just how many pictures did you review before buying?

I was sent about 10 photos.  One that showed some rocker rust.  I asked where the car came from and they told me they didn't know.  I found the original bill of sale under the bill of sale they put in the car from 2013 that stated the car was from Michigan.  Here are a couple photos I was sent.  You can see the floor looks pretty dang clean in the one photo which led me to believe it could be a southern car.  The third photo shows the worst rust picture he sent me.  Figured it might need some new rockers.

If anyone has an early nose panel for sale around Michigan or the surrounding states let me know lol

    Thanks
