The U.S.-spec 320i went from 2.0 to 1.8 liters with the 1979 model year. And, simultaneously, the direction of the distributor was reversed. It’s not just for 1979. That’s simply the beginning of the 1.8-liter engine in U.S. cars.

    Regards,

    Steve

That makes perfect sense! Looks like if I have the 2.0L (fairly sure I do), then a '75 should have no distributor or mounting issues. Great news!

    For reference:

    Pics 1 & 2 show a block from a 78 E21

    Pics 3 & 4 show a block from a 74 2002

    I dont see much difference

I suspect an 02 engine would fit early E21 simply by swapping over the mounts.

Issues probably start at the M10s big change of life (2L to 1.8L)

Ah interesting, so I probably don't have a mid car like I think, that actually makes sense why would '79 be uniquely different, it wouldn't be.

I'm fairly certain I have a 2.0L which should mean that the distributor and mounting brackets match the later model '02s.

I'll go over to the car and try to verify.

    Thanks for the help!

I'm new to this but my impression is us 2002 people drop in E21 and E30 (M20) engines. Isn't it cheaper and easier for you to use an E21 engine? No offense, but I thought E21s were inexpensive.

It would be easier, maybe not cheaper. But if I want the '79 2.0 I'd need to find an engine from a '79 e21 which is pretty difficult. Opening it up to some '02s increases the engines available.

2002 blocks are missing a couple hole taps for the e21 motor mounts. Also, the distributor spins in a different direction. The gear at the cam has to be changed if you are keeping other parts of e21 injection/electronics

    Steve

Really helpful, thanks. Do you know if it's possible to swap in an early e21 '77-'78 engine bracket to work with the 2002 hole taps?

The distributor on the '79 e21 should work with a 2002 camshaft as long as it is the style that spins clockwise.  They spun them the other way when they did away with points and went electronic; which is what Steve was referring to above.

The one on the left is a late e21 and on the right is an early style e21.  Note the difference in the gears.  2002 distributor gears look like the one on the right.  There will be a little arrow stamped below the part number that shows the direction of rotation.

    Tom

That makes perfect sense, thank you!! I'll look into my current distributor.

Is there any straightforward way around the hole taps for the motor mounts? Could I just source a '77 - '78 e21 mounting bracket?

This seems like it makes it basically a no go?

Or is there an adapter kit for the mount / can I use the old distributor on my current e21?

The e21 1.8 motor has the cam gear that runs a different direction. The problem would be the electronic pick up int your current distributor.

    Gotcha,

I have a full engine in my car, just damaged the block. Could I use other current parts to make this work?

    Thanks

An M10 originally from a 114 chassis will have the cam gear and distributor gear possibly running a different direction from your e21 platform M10 depending on build date. If this is something you are aware of and know in advance, I have a running engine in a car that will be coming out in Md. If you are interested, pm me.

I did not know that, thanks for the heads up!

I have a '79 320i, do you know if that's compatible with what you have? If so, I'm intersted.

Shoot me a PM or reply here w/ contact info.

    Thanks!

  9. Those look great, I'm in Philly but could drive a decent distance to pick up.

I'm looking for something I can pop into an e21. Don't have to be pristine, but I don't want to refinish in order to use.

Send me details on price, etc?

    Thanks!

  10. Blew my M10 on my e21, looking for a replacement, preferably a 2.0L.

I have the old engine which has many components but it has a cracked block. Looking to swap entire engine. Can use a few components from old engine if necessary.

    I'm in Philadelphia.

    Thanks

  11. I recently made an impulsive decision to buy an ’02 as my daily driver. I have since changed my mind and am going to stick with my other car as the daily.

I’m willing to sell the car at a loss, but frankly need to get rid of the car soon as it has become a distraction for me.

My impulsive loss is your gain! I’m willing to make someone a very good deal.

Has had a ton of new parts and upgrades and could be a great car with a few projects here and there. Tons of service records included.

Mechanically very sound, the car runs, drives and stops very well.

    Florida & Atlanta car.

    Two main projects to tackle:

-Fenders need resprayed. The paint has lifted some, and cracked in places, on the rounded edges.

-Needs matching springs installed. (Long story, but the car is 100% functional and there is no rush on this, mechanically)

Here’s my listing with a ton more details and pictures.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

    Thanks.

If the floors are already repaired, what else might be lurking. Keep in mind however that the floors can rust from a leaky heater core in an otherwise rust free car.

Have you you done the magnet test of the sheet metal to see where there is body filler?

That's a real good point - floor replacements have been welded in and heater is weak evidently. Will definitely investigate and likely plan to replace heater core.
