  1. Re sunroof rarity:

From my more-than-a-few-years experience, the newer the 2002 the better chance of it being a sunroof.  I think (simply based on observation) that a higher percentage of squarelights sold in the US had sunroofs than roundies.

So for a 1970, it would be less common than for a later car, but I wouldn't call it "rare."

    cheers

You know, that's what I figured. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

  2. Holy quarter panel rust batman!!!

$1000 bucks tops if it has a title in the PNW area cause we have a lot of dry cars. Is this the "Very Rusty" car on craigslist for 1500 bucks up there in Bellingham? Been curious what it looked like...

Nope, this is a Canadian car, located in British Columbia!

wait, did he say, 'ran when parked'..?

Yup. Was sitting for years with no one driving it. Not sure when it was parked exactly, but it was certainly running when it was. There seems to be a fuel delivery issue, we're looking into that right now.

  3. $1000.00.  Probably a parts car.  Bad quarter panel rust likely means there is some serious rust in other places.  That'll kill ya.

Doing the labour, you could likely sell $2500. in parts.

Sorry to be brutal, but it's better than the many disappointments you'll experience as you find the hidden rust.

Hey there, I honestly think this is more of "Dad thinks he's got a gem" more than anything else. Thank you for your honesty, I certainly prefer it to lies! I'll see what kind of trim bits he can get back together, seeing as every little bit will help.

I'm gonna get him to double check the rust situation, he seems pretty certain that corner is the only real spot. Hopefully I can get some underbody pics.

  4. That's some serious rust/rot in the passenger rear quarter, how is the rest of the underside, (frame rails, rockers, floor pan, shock towers, spare well)?  Non-running, as is, I would price this car out somewhere between $500 to $3000, depending on how it was marketed.  If you put the trim back on, got it running, straightened the bumper, and had pictures to show that the rust was only in the rear quarter, you could probably get $3-$6K on eBay, maybe more.  It is a reasonably straight early "roundie" in original Granada Red, but it needs some serious love and care to return it to its former glory.

    IMHO,

Yeah, that back corner was by far and large the biggest worry of mine. Thanks a bunch for your input, I really appreciate it. I'll see if he can get some pictures of the underside to see what's going on down there. He assures me that the rest of the car is basically rust free, but then again, he also told me the back corner "wasn't so bad", lol. He's definitely gonna try to get it running and take a video of it. (I have high hopes for this, given that everything still spins nice and freely after all these years. Car was drained of fluids before being stored, I have a feeling it's just a clogged fuel line/filter).

My sunroof was pretty stuck when I got my car. I sorta' forced it open (Probably not the best of ideas but I was 15 and dumb) and I applied a large amount of grease on the tracks. Works flawless to this day. I can't see the pictures because I'm at school and they sorta' blocked the site they are on but I will follow up later tonight. Best of luck!

I'll have to get him to look into this, thanks! The rails might very well be the problem. A bit of grease can go a long way. Let me know what you think after you've seen the pictures!

And if anyone can chime in about the sunroof being rare, I would appreciate it. (He seems to think this is a big deal for some reason, but I honestly have no clue.)

Now, to the nitty gritty! It's a 1971 BMW 2002. It has the sunroof (seized at the moment), which I am told is rare for the available North American 2002's, It obviously has some rust (passenger rear quarter panel is rusted right out.), and is not in the best of shape, but considering the age I think it held up pretty well.

The motor turns over (was running when parked in 2001.) and seems to be usable, just not getting fuel at the moment. (We are looking at seeing if we can rectify this in the next few days).

The album pretty much shows all you need to know about it's condition, and I can get more photos if necessary. The car is located in British Columbia, Canada. The parts shows come with the car, obviously.

The big question is, what is a good asking price? Not gonna lie, I've been a GM guy all my life and have absolutely no experience with these BWM's, classic or new. I would really appreciate any help you guys and gals could give me!

If you require any more info, please let me know and I will see what I can do.
