Broken spider gears are very common. Especially in high power cars. Never ever do one-wheel burnouts if you are conscerned about your open differential. LSD diffs are a lot more forgiving.

You can treat it with different rust dissolvers that has phosphorous acid in them. it will effectively eat the rust away and leave a thin protective layer. then paint it over with epoxy paint. it will encapsulate it well and prevent further rot.

You still have to jet the carb right, so why not go for push through? Use Dellorto DHLA or FI. I would go for a cheap FI with ignition all days of the week. I have used both setups and i have seen draw through setups a lot of times. They are never really good. To get a good working turbo setup you need to have good fuel control and ignition control or you will be in trouble. FI is by far the best way to go. With a distributor with weights and vacuum/boost retard and advance you will never have good enough control on the timing and it is far too hard to tweak it. We used to go with fixed ignition (about 25-30 degrees) or a really low mechanical advance (7-5 degrees), but the drawback is that it will not function very well over the whole rpm/load range.
Also routing the exhaust all the way to the other side will give you a warmer engine bay even if you exhaust wrap it. You need a turbo that is sealed for draw through applications or you will fill up the compressor housing with oil getting sucked in from the bearing housing. Also you can not use an intercooler because the fuel will liquify in it.

Been driving turbo 02's for years. Both with twin dellortos and with EFI. Both as a daily driver and for trackdays. Works perfect.

Did you dial in your cam correctly? You need an adjustable cam gear and dial in the cam to the right amount of lift in TDC.
