Looking for an e30 m42 oil sump in Sydney, NSW, AU.
Please PM if you've got one lying around.
Thanks -
That Momo is a pretty small wheel. Does your car have skinny tires, or power steering?
Skinny tires, but I plans to go wider. No power steering either. What size wheel would you recommend?
Rats- I was hoping this thread was about installing a Ford Coyote Boss 302 engine into a 2002.

Sorry to dissapoint!

Where's the best place to buy a a good boss kit for an aftermarket wheel?
Thanks,

Anyone have any info on this? I've got the classic daily walkthrough and it says to use e30 BUT I already have e36 manual transmission. Same process with e36?
Cheers, -
You are my Jesus. Thank you..

Hey all,
I'm going to be doing a M42 swap into my '02, but I'm a bit stumped on the electronics. Im pulling some parts out of a donor car (e36), what electrical components will I need to grab?
I've already grabbed battery cables, and all of the electrical components in the engine bay are disconnected. But, the fuse box has a lot of cables running through the firewall into the dash of the donor car which aren't just a simple 'unplug'.Do I need any of that? I ask because it's going to be a big job taking apart the donor cars dash to get all that wiring out. My instinct is that it's not needed.. but when it comes to electricals I'm fairly hopeless!
Thanks,

It's not difficult--strip to bare metal the areas you want repainted. You will get a much more professional result by removing as many parts as possible, keeping in mind rust inspection, paint overspray/access, requirements for masking, matching of paint, etc. My project intent was to paint all the interior areas (engine compartment, wheel wells, and trunk) and have the shell painted by a specialist. Quarter windows are not that difficult to remove once you access the sheet metal screws on the B pillar. The perimeter around the front/rear windshield (under the gasket) can hide a lot of rust. Start from the top and work down. I removed the truck lid and hood, but left the doors on (for transport later). I used about 3-1/2 gallons of Klean-Strip paste type stripper. It took 2 to 3 applications of stripper (plus lacquer thinner) to get every trace of paint removed, working a section at a time. I was told I would save $1500 to $2000 by stripping it myself (by a top line restoration specialist). Plan on replacing most rubber gaskets (which will get pricey). Hopefully you have the knack for remembering how to put everything s back together. Good luck.
Thanks for that, very helpful. How much were you charged in the end after doing all that yourself?
I read a suggestion on here a while back that said to 'use zip locs and a sharpie pen to label every little part you take off the car.' It went on to say, 'you might think you will be putting it back together next week, but organize it as though it will be ten years from now.'
I actually already do this haha! Little sandwich bags with permanent marker. Works a charm, plus shite loads of photos and video where possible works for me too.
Edit: Spelling

The final job will look much better if you pull all the lights, grills, chrome, rubber seals. Anything you don't want painted body color. Front and rear windows should come out to check for rust, but you can work around those if need be. Rear side windows are more of a pain to remove so maybe leave them. Depends on what kind of re-spray you want: quick and dirty, or something you'll be pleased with down the road.
Hmm definitely something that will last a long time and I will be geuinley happy with. Thanks for the tips

Hey guys,
I'm in the process of stripping down my '02 for a complete body respray. I will be taking it to a shop to get the spraying done, but I just wanted to know how MUCH I should be stripping off myself?
Anyone out there who has resprayed, did you go so far as removing everything except the shell?
Also, will stripping it myself save me much money? Not that it matters I'm enjoying getting to know my car more - just curious.
This is the first restoration of a car I have ever undertaken, so help here would be appreciated.
Thanks, -
But then, I don't have a blog...
t
For shame..haha I'm kidding mate.
Thanks for all the advice guys, I guess I'll have to keep doing a bit more digging to figure out what to do (and maybe break out the good old tape measure)
Appreciate the help everyone

So I will need an e30 tail shaft? An e36 wouldn't work?you will need and e30 intake since the e36 intake will not fit under the hood, also you'll and e30 318 driveshaft, Not sure if there is any difference in the tranny, I just got my car back with the m42 swap and all the parts that we used were from an e30 donor.
I read a blog where he used an E36 without any mods?...at least without any he noted hahaThe e36 transmission sits very high in the tunnel. The ratios are great (1:1 5th) but I don't think it clears without someserious tunnel heightening. t
If you had to recommend a set up in regards to where I should source parts from what would it be?
I was just going to go for e36 everything because it thought itd
be simpler

So I have my engine along with alternator, ECU and ignition...now I'm looking at getting a transmission (5 speed manual) to go with it.
I've read some blogs and apparently I can get the transmission and drive shaft from the same donor car (E36) and with Jakobs custom mounts it will fit nicely into the 2002.
So do I just go down to a wreckers looking for a transmission and drive shaft? -
Thanks, I've already got myself an engine doing some searching for a transmission to go with it atm. Also got in touch with Jakeb on this forum and ill be buying his conversion kit. With these guides here I should hopefully be ok.

Thanks guys, all that stuff will be really helpful when the time comes.

Hey everyone,
Im looking at doing an engine swap to a M42 engine with 5 speed transmission from a early 90s 318i.
I was wondering was if someone could link me to a post/blog where this had been done before? Ive heard that as far as conversions go its not a particularly difficult one...but who knows my sources might be unreliable.
Thanks guys.
Someone wants to buy my project [ADVICE]
in BMW 2002 and other '02
Posted
Hi everyone,
Someone has approached me to buy my '02. It is in a unique condition given that it is my project car, and I am not sure what price would be reasonable to accept. Below is a rundown of the current state of the car.
It is mid way through an M42 swap. The body is in fairly good condition. The engine is not yet properly mounted as I need to swap out the current lower oil sump for a different version which I have, in order for it to fit correctly. The engine going in it is in good working condition and was running well on the car it was removed from. I also have the transmission and driveshaft to go with it (required for the swap), as well as the electrical harness and fuel pump. I do not have the original engine as it was in bad condition. I also do not have the original transmission for the same reason. The interior of the car is currently filled with spare parts including spare grille, spare front and brake lights. The condition of the interior isn't great, but is original. Most of the seats were unbolted to inspect the internal condition and they remain this way.
I live in Australia, where these cars are fairly rare I believe. Any advice on price would be greatly appreciated.
I've attached all the photos I have of the car, in case that helps.
