  1. Guys, and Gals!

newbie here. I found a site on this forum that you can put in your VIN # and get details on your car. I recently purchased what I believe is a 73 2002. The VIN # on the title, chassis, engine, and steering column all say 2588314. Entering this VIN into the site says my car is a series E30, 318i, engine M40 with a 1988/06 production date. Have I been scammed or am I not reading the site correctly? Im confused. HELP!!!!

    Thanks in advance

  2. update.. Replaced my exhaust manifold studs & gasket this past weekend. The process was fairly easy, however I still have a small leak. It does not appear to be coming from the studs like before but now the head gasket near the #3 exhaust port. The leak is about the size of a silver dollar where as before it was much larger. This really sucks...

  3. Folks,

This weekend I plan to replace the exhaust manifold gasket and studs on my 73 2002 due to leaking. I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have read some threads that say use blue locktite on the studs and some that say use red. Which is correct?

    2. I have also heard that the studs should only be installed hand tight. Is this correct?

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Guys,

I have identified what I believe is an oil leak from the exhaust manifold. I have read about a hundred post on how to replace the gasket and studs. The problem is I'm terrified to attempt it in fear of breaking one of the studs. I have a spare head (came with car) on my workbench with the studs installed so I attempted to remove the studs on the spare on the workbench and they wouldnt budge. If I cant remove the ones on the workbench, how in the heck can I remove the ones on the car. Are there any 02 owners in Columbus Ohio who would be willing to spend an afternoon helping a fellow owner. Willing to pay with a case of your favorite beverage or steak dinner or whatever... Need serious help.

  5. I have a 73 2002 that i've been thinking of removing the overiders and pulling the bumpers in about 2 inches. I like the Euro look. Has anyone done this? whats the easiest way to do the rear? should I cut and weld the oval shaped rear brackets or will a beefy vise work? the metal doesnt appear to be too thick so I think a vise will work as long as I dont change the mounting holes. Thoughts??

  6. Hi Charlie, My apologies if I already sent this but I think I may have responded to my own post,

I also live in Hilliard. Im looking for someone close that could do some work on my 02. Anyone in the area that you would recommend. When I bought the car the seller said that it would soon need rod bearings because of a slight knock. It would be great if I bought the parts and I could help someone to learn. The purchase also came with tons of extra parts, valves, stems, hoses, pistons, rings etc... as well as a complete engine. Not sure of the condition of the spare engine but would be nice if I could use some of its parts.

  8. Hi guys,

New here so go easy on me. Recently purchased a 73 2002 that came with a spare engine. Getting ready to remove head on the spare and clean the block to see what I have. Does anyone know the socket size to remove the crankshaft pulley nut so I can remove the lower timing chain cover.
