The heat shield I spoke of is actually an exhaust manifold gasket from an 83 - 85 318i. The factory part number is 11.62.1.723.876. I actually didn't know where it came from - I just asked my parts guy to get a gasket with the shield and he knew what I wanted. I finally found it tonight at Mesa Performance (www.mesaperformance.com) in Misc Gaskets. This is not a metal shield that tend to rust and rattle and should work fine with your headers. I've seen many 02's set up with this and mine's been fine for years. You can chase it down at realoem.com to see what it looks like or maybe someone will post a pic ot theirs. As many as I've seen, I just couldn't find a decent pic of one installed. It will help save your new wire set.

Consider new plug wires and fuel filter - maybe an exhaust manifold gasket with the heat shield? If you don't have the passenger side trunk moulding, I've got one you can have for the cost of shipping.

out of Clarksville up to Lake Burton. There is a whoop-de-doo just past (50 ft) Mark of the Potter that feels like a roller coaster ride. It is a seat-of-the-pants experience best felt in a well handling 02. A bit further on and you will have to ford a creek that runs across the road - it's not that deep. There are many switch backs along this route which are laid out in a manner that you can see 1/4 mile ahead and 6 curves between you and there. Drop the hammer to the extent of your pleasure with no worry of blind curves or oncoming traffic. Stop at the Moccasin Creek fishery and see a million (more or less) trout being raised for release in Georgia streams and take a leak across the road (you'll need it by then). Most trips, I turn around there and head back but you can run on up to Ga76 if you care for a vista view into the next state. Mid-morning (10ish) the third Tuesday in Jan is the best time to be there. All school buses are gone, no locals are going anywhere, no leaf lookers around and the spring buds on the trees make the mountains almost as colorful as the fall (with good polarized sunglasses). Don't be surprised if law-doggie follows you back through Clarksville (happend to me twice), just pull into the next station and top off for the ride home. They'll probably want to talk to you about your 02 and how well they've heard they handled (since you and your little jaunt have been THE conversation on their radio for the last little while), but be nice and they will too.

the stump right outside of the back door (or front door if you are renting a trailer) is the same color as the last rattle can used.

take the half-shafts out, repack and repair any boot damage then replace them backwards so they turn in the opposite direction. Viritually brand new CV's for the cost of a little labor.

Not an expert on this but finding an AC crank pulley for a tii may be the challenge.

That's a good response! I suspect the mounts are the problem, but I think you nailed the rain issue.

I had same situation recently and resolved it by cutting that part of the gasket off of a spare motor with a box cutter. So far, no leaks. If no spare motor, maybe fabricating the piece from gasket stock from most any parts house. A stop-gap measure (pun intended) for sure.

My suggestion would be to remove the DS from the car. After that, typically no gringing is needed unless you've got a fat box end.

Get in the car and press down on the brake pedal, then crank the car. As soon as it fires up, the brake pedal should go down about a half an inch. If it does, then the booster still holds vaccum and is OK.

I suspect there are 70 2002s in the greater Atlanta area including garage queens and track cars. A few years ago when SE2002 was struggling there were several gatherings over a couple of years with the finale being the trip to Spartingburg. Prior to that the largest outing was about 25 cars. The group fell flat after that for multiple reasons. If you want a good time in the mountains don't overlook GA197 out of Clarksville (one of the best) and perhaps loop over just north of Walhalla, SC.

Just picked up a timing cover gasket set and was expecting to see a gasket to go between the upper half and the lower half, but it wasn't there. Came back to work and checked realoem and don't see a gasket between the two halves there either. Do you just slather the two covers with gasket sealer and pray? I've got the all gaskets for the front of the block and a new front oil seal, but not the horizontal gasket between the two covers.

90% or my 02 experience has been with Tii's and now I am trying to set-up my step son's carbed 73 with a Weber 38/38 with a PO installed electric fuel pump. There was no fuel regulator on the car when purchased last summer and there have been issues with the Weber 40 that came with the car dumping raw gas into the cylinders. I've got a new 38/38 and need to know how the 02 community addresses the need for no more than 3lbs of pressure at the carb. Any info about which regulator is "the choice" or where to place the regulator or any common sense pointers is much appreciated. I need to get this car back on the raod ASAP so we can go terrorize the north Georgia twisties. Initial indication is his car is going to give my tii a run for the money but I've got to give him a sporting chance and set his car up right.
