Maybe I didnt catch it but why did you shorten the coolant pipe?
And you didnt mention it but what are you going to do about the oilpan to driver's side frame rail interference? Rotate the motor a bit to the passenger side with your new mounts maybe?
-
I'd hardly call your roll cage extensive. Looks like your run-of-the-mill BMWCCA Mod cage.
With all steel panels, glass and not much lightening done, I dont think youll be under 2000lbs wet. Or dry for that matter.
-
So with the motor in the 'stock' location, the stock S14 filter fits?
-
That's a pretty good price. Lee, could you find out the weight of these doors? I wonder how they compare to fully gutted metal door skins.
-
Tranny is a manual 265.
I think I will follow your advice Toby and my initial hunch and just let the sludge live in there. Now the tranny is currently out of the car so I suspect that running ATF through it without running it will do next to nothing. So I guess I'll put some generic ATF in it for a few miles and then put in some redline MTL.

I've read about several members here using this method for flushing/cleaning their manual tranny. I have to say I am hesitant to use this method since I have no way of pressure feeding the diesel through the tranny. My concern being that whatever gunk and sludge is built up in there will dissolve but not fully exit the tranny. I fear that the crap that does not get flushed out will re-solidify in a new location and the whole process has a good chance of causing more harm than good. Suggestions, comments?

Specs:
7.5x17 BBS LM's(yes, they're real)
Where the hell did you find 4x100 real LMs? Ive seen some on a Mini once but cant find where to buy them from.

Wrong and wrong, lol.
Do the math douche.
Fully dressed M10. Used a spring scale with +/- 1lb accuracy. But I made a mistake since this was the first time using a scale like this and I left the motor up in the air attached to the scale for 10 min before taking the picture. After I took the motor off, the scale was reading 9lbs even though i had zeroed it out before starting. So in essence the scale had a 9lb preload.
Fully dressed alum M52. I did not take this picture. Although the person who did stated he was missing the wiring harness and throttle body. I estimate those two parts at a combined 10lbs.
So 345 lbs for the M10 and ~340 lbs for the alum M52. So youre right I was wrong, the alum M52 is actually ~5lbs lighter than an M10.
And I assumed cutting out the radiator core support was a given for this type of project.
Just because you failed, doesnt mean that other people will.

Alum M52 is only 10lbs heavier than a M10 and its not much bigger than the M20 that people stuff in there all the time.

Are we all comfortable running just two nuts on the camber plates instead of four?

Ha! I love this site but 'efficient' would be the very last thing I would call it. Search options are abysmal, PM function is nonexistent but worst of all we only have ONE subforum for EVERY topic imaginable. Worthwhile threads get lost in a sea of 'My car doesnt run right...' and 'I want 300hp out of my M10, tell me how...'
It boggles my mind why the owners refuse to upgrade to Vbulletin. It cant be for money reasons because Im sure everyone would donate if they were to upgrade. I would be all for membership dues. It would get rid of the spammers as well as the people posting anonymously. Its as if this board enjoys lagging behind the times.
Look at r3vlimited for the perfect example of a properly run site. Awesome search, PM functions, and personal gallery space to upload and store your own pictures. Not to mention over a dozen subforums that keeps things ontopic. All paid for by one small little ad, kinda like the one at the bottom of this page...
Sorry for the rant and I know this is going to come off as ungrateful but this has bothered me a long time.

You can order OEM lines from the dealer in any length fwiw. Its fairly cheap too. After seeing how much trouble everyone has with flaring lines for our cars, I'd rather spend my time bending. I bought multiple sections totaling 90" for like 15$.

2.5L build this winter?
-
Ive asked you before but youve never responded. Do you plan on giving the molds to a shop to lay the fenders for you or are you going to do that yourself as well? If the former applies, would you consider allowing the shop to make fenders for others?
-
i kept up in all the corners but those E36 M3's are fuckin fast in the strights.
Are we talking stock e36m3s or gutted, cammed and coilover-ed e36m3s?

That red touring is simply amazing. Looking to sell Mike ?

I`m also part way through a rebuild and have gone with an ex BTCC 2.0L S14, dogleg gearbox coil overs, porsche Brembo 4 pots up front, e30 M3 steering rack , and a complete E30 rear subframe, limited slip diff and discs at the rear.
Dave
Wow, please post some pictures.

In bold: connections needed
01 - To alternator dash light - Cluster
04 - To coolant temp gauge - Cluster
05 - To oil pressure light - Cluster
07 - To ignition switch - RUN position
09 - To Tachometer - Cluster
13 - To 7.5A fuse - To Fuel pumps
15 - To ignition switch - START position
18 - To ignition switch - START position
19 - To oil temp gauge - Cluster
Why are you even bothering with the following in a racecar? Dont you have aftermarket, more accurate gauges for these?
04 - To coolant temp gauge - Cluster
05 - To oil pressure light - Cluster
19 - To oil temp gauge - Cluster
Is this necessary to hook up?
01 - To alternator dash light - Cluster

Sorry to let out your secret Blunt but I happen to know your parts business is not your livelihood and I'd like to help these clueless saps out, so I dont have to keep reading 'I got buttf'ed at the dealer today...' threads.
What Blunt has going on is nothing special. I became good friends with my dealership parts guy and started getting wholesale pricing(60-70% of retail) by default. He then let me in on something I wasnt aware of in case he was to ever leave BMW. Simply go down to your county courthouse, pay 20$ and get a 'License to do business' permit. Name your new company 'Insert your last name here' Performance Shop. Go back to BMW, show them your new license and ask to setup a wholesale account. Voila, you now get wholesale pricing. Now a few caveats. First, they wont ship or deliver your parts to you unless you actually have a legit business address. Second, there are different tiers of wholesale pricing based on the volume you purchase. So you wont be able to entirely match Blunt because Im betting he gets a bigger discount because he seems to move quite a bit of product. One last benefit is that you will be able to order parts for your friends and get them the discount as well once you setup your account.
This is basically what places like Maximillan are doing except they take it one large, work intensive step further and setup a website in order to sell to the public.

that is almost pornographic........ I have tire envy.......mine are only 205's hehe
You can fit 205s under stock bodywork. Why do you have turbo flares if youre not utilizing the extra room?
-
One has a side wall that is 35% the width of 275mm and the other has a side wall 50% of 275mm. Thus the difference in overall diameter.
John
Im not retarded, I understand what the numbers mean. My question was why dont they make the 275/35/15 size in the R6 compound.
Are you sure about that Steve? Looking at their tire catalog I only see A6 in that size.
-
the tires are 275/35R15
steve k.
Any thoughts as to why they make the equivalent R6 so tall? 275/35/15 vs. 275/50/15. 2.5" difference in diameter is huge.

S52 Possible - yes:

Somewhere in their write up, there's a movie I remember watching. If you look close, you'll see the brake fluid reservoir mounted on the dash. To me, that means there's a whole lot of stuff under the hood, if there's not room for that...
Ken
Ha, every proper racecar has the brake fluid reservoir in the cockpit. It helps keep the fluid temperature down so it keeps from boiling.

Interesting stuff - do you know what the fully dressed weight of an s14 is??
You mention gearbox, but also consider the diff - 49lbs for a 2002/e21 diff versus 83lbs for an e30. Didn't Paul Cain use an all alloy engine and his beast weighed in at around 1200kgs, with CF panels, 2 seats, and no heater - granted it has 2 turbos and the necessary plumbing.
I love any imaginative engine swap, but I also think less weight is better than more power every time.
And lastly, John Capoccia - that looks like an m20 to me.
Cheers, Nick
I have not weighed my S14 yet. It is fully dressed but already has the tranny attached and I realllllly dont feel like taking it off just to measure. I will weigh the whole assembly before putting it in the car though. I'm pissed I didnt weigh my '02 tranny before I sold it.
Yes the diff is heavier but it is at the lowest point of the chassis and in line with the rear wheels, somewhere I dont really mind having a bit more weight, especially with more power. Plus I think its necessary when going over 200rwhp, look how many diffs Curtis(i think) has gone through.
I was baffled when I saw that Paul's car weighed 1200kg. I dont know how to explain the additional weight but its not from the motor itself.
Oh I am definitely all for less weight. That was the main reason why I choose the 2002 chassis for my racecar. Also why Im going with a stroked alum 2.8. I could do a destroked euro motor from which people are getting around 320rwhp. But the euro motor weighs more than the iron 24v, so we're probably talking at least 100lbs more than the alum 24v.

Whats all this jibberjabber about tolerances? Blue on top, red on bottom. I assume this follows BMW's regular color scheme.
