reinforcing shock tower for coilover pics?

Anyone done anything different? The usual is to simply build a box around the existing piece with flat metal stock.. I have seen a piece of tubing being slid over the top and then a flat circle welded over top as well.. Also heard of guys simply welding a really big washer on the top..

if you've done it, pics please!

The tops of the towers have been cut and lenghtened 1 1/2 inch.

Welding in a brace across the towers would be best, but I just bolted mine. Also I would put the diagonal to the diff mount location. Maybe someone can post a picture of that setup. I have seen it on here with full cage setups.

Also the underside of the towers (in the wheel well) have been welded. these are spot welded from factory.

heh...

Having cut mine apart, my opinion is (gasp) that they're pretty stout IF there's

no structural rust involved.

The can is very thick, and it's got enough surface area to spread loads

into the inner fender.

The ass end of a 2002 is hard- pressed to hit 900 lbs, divided by 2 wheels.

If I remember correctly, the only real weak point is that it's spot welded to

the spring perch, so a bit of added weld there would strengthen it.

Once the spring perch takes the weight, you're golden.

Well, that and the top mount needs to be done well- if you try to just use

a rubber shock mount, that could be bad... but a big, thick washer

is about all it'd require- on both sides.

again, that's what I think.

Pete, can you post that picture.... Sorry, it isn't on this machine. I cut a 1.5 inch hole in the top of the strut tower using a plasma torch with a washer bolted into place as a guide. I then cut a 1.5 inch piece of a spare 2x2 trailer hitch and welded that on the top of the strut tube and drilled it front to rear. You can't get much simplier than that.
