I raced my 2002 at the Coronado Speediest last weekend. This is a spectacular event. If you have never been to it, go. You will not be disappointed.

I raced in Group 8, which consisted of 41 cars- 11 2002's, Alfas, Datsun 510s, Porsches, and a few others.

Don't forget to leave a comment, or a 'like,' or a link. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed the video.  Were you the top finishing '02?

Jim,

A 'period correct' 914-6 with a 3.6 motor (paddock rumor was north of 300 HP) was first. 2002's were 2nd - 5th. Tim Brecht 2nd, Craig Hauenstein 3rd, Boris Said 4th (all three are BMW dealers), and yours truly 5th.

Good day for the Roundels!

Steve

Great video Steve.  If your daytime job doesn't work out ..... you got skills.

I have heard that Coronado track (or should I say course, since it really isn't a "track" per se) is really tough on the cars....uneven pavement/construction joints, tooling of the cement etc., tough on chassis, tough on tires.  Would that be a Y or N?   Seems like the o2 is well suited though for that kind of a pounding.  You could pick up on some of that from your cam bouncing around with inside cockpit shots.  Nice having so many o2's entered.  It would be interesting to see where they would have my car run, guessing not with your group since it has a twin cam motor and significant HP advantage.

Thanks, Mark.

The track is quite rough, with weird camber changes, varying levels of grip (sometimes in one corner), and NO visual references for brake points and turn-in points. It is a cheese grader on the tires, especially the left front. Expect to completely use up a set of tires during the weekend.

I would guess they'd put your car either in our group (I can already hear the screams from the 510 owners!), or in the FIA group, which is where they put Jeff Gerken in my old CSL.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
