Sagging Seat Mystery

Leitrum

Recommended Posts

As I continue to go down the "while you are in there" hole waiting for parts and machining, I've turned my eye to the interior. Initially, I only intended to clean up the heater box, but then I decided to rewire the battery to the trunk since I'm painting the engine bay. And of course, with the seats coming out, I might as well take a look at why the drivers seat has a mean sag towards the door. What I found was unexpected.

I didn't find anything. As in, what I assumed was a missing spring or broken perch, turned out to be the complete absence of two springs! What the hell! Not wanting to upgrade my seats at this time considering the great shape that they're in otherwise, what suggestions do people have? Is anyone parting out a seat or have some springs on hand? Not really enthused about trying to get springs into place correctly without mucking up the pads or outer cover, I'm happy to pay someone to do it if that's the best approach.

I suggest you put the battery under the back seat.

;)

Cheers,

Isn't under the back seat vs. in the trunk like a pepsi/coke thing on this board? Heh.

What year 2002 do you have?  Are your seats original (to the car)?

Here are some earlier seat bottom frames

Mine is a 76 and the frame looks quite a bit different than what you have there. You don't have the same crossbar or springs in the middle like mine does.

Why you think you're missing springs? Are you comparing it to other side seat or picture for reference?

You are missing item #3 if you have square taillight car. Part # 52101843100

The illustration below is why I think I'm missing springs. There's a third of the seat that is completely unsupported. I can also see scratch marks where there used to be clips that attached the springs to the frame in the same location as the opposite side.

Late 2002s (76s and I think 75s) used essentially the same seat as the then-new--and contemporaneously produced--E21 3 series, thus the difference in seat innards.  I suspect you could find a derelict E21 and get the guts from the non-sports seats to repair yours.

Yes, any 2002 front seats produced after July 1974 should have the same innards as the early e21 seats. The difference is in the covers: 6 "ribs" in the central seating area of the the '75-'76 2002 seats; 4 ribs in the central seating area of the e21 seats.

I have the exact same issue in my 76.  Was told by a few to replace the seat pad, which is expensive as far as I can find...I am putting mine away for the winter this weekend at which time I will remove my seat and let you know the spring set up.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
