wiring diagram clarification

Recommended Posts

The Haynes manual obviously has an assortment of wiring diagrams covering the range (1502, 1602, 2002, ti, tii, etc). Can someone tell me the difference between "wiring diagram - 2002 (typical)" and "wiring diagram - 2002 - North America (typical)"? My car seems to share elements from both, but there are clearly differences between the two as well - most noteably the headlight switch, flasher unit wiring. I am fully aware of the high probability for PO monkey business. Up until now, I was working under the assumption that the "2002 - North America" diagram was the correct schematic for my car ('71 2002), but after taking a long hard look at the "2002 (typical)", certain things are making a lot more sense than they had before.

Also, where is the hazard light switch on the "2002 (typical)" diagram? I have done a few searches and it seems like a lot of folks have encountered differences between diagram and reality, but not depicting a hazard light switch seems like a strange omission.

Thanks in advance.

I've found similar probs with haynes based on years, search this site for the factory manual diagrams and keys which are much more accurate..still some variations, also there are a few providers of speciality large sized color coded wire diagrams on plastic.

Austin,

check the search here on the board as well as the FAQ section, i am sure you will find some more diagram better suited for you.

also to help narrow down which diagram you need check your car to see if it is a 12 fuse late model '71 or 6 fuse early model key difference for you!

Enjoy

The Prospero's garage laminated prints are easy to read, but may not go into the detail you need. The Haynes prints have the detail you need, but there are variations and the quality of the prints has decreased over the last few printings. The Clymers book has some good prints, but still variances. The factory prints are good, but there are also some variances from model to model.

Depending on what I am doing, I may look at several sources. It's kind of like looking at several different travel books before visiting Paris. Don't take just one persons word for what you are looking at.

Suprisingly, my E30M3 ETM (Electronics Troubleshooting Manual) is very accurate.

I need the one that c.d. posted...but bigger and readable. Where can we get a good blown up (11x17) clear version?

manual from the factory, but it takes some searching to find the right one for your car. some 71s had six fuse setups, some had 12. That's the first thing you need to determine.

then look in the manual and find a 6 (or 12) fuse, round tail light wiring diagram marked for US cars and that should be pretty close to what your car should have. Be advised, though I have found errors on the factory wiring charts!

cheers and good luck

Thanks for all the insightful posts. I never had any problem with the clarity of the diagrams in my manual, I just was clearly using the wrong one for my car. I assumed (erroneously it would seem) that the "North America" diagram would be the most appropriate, given that my car was imported into NY by Hoffman Motors and clearly intended for the North American market. I spent 30 minutes after work rewiring a bunch of stuff so that it all looked just like the other diagram in question, and now everything (lo beam, hi beam, tail lights, parking lights, flashers, etc.) works PERFECTLY.

SteveJ - I like what you said about looking at different sources. Well put. Easy to forget, but very good and simple advice.

Thanks again to all who chimed in....

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
