  1. Cleaning up shop today and found the digital file for this diagram. We have a giant one laminated here at the shop. Don't bother emailing the address/company on the page, we've tried to reach them but no response (out of business?). Hope you all enjoy this, could be very helpful for some people. ed.pdf
  2. Making slow but steady progress cleaning up the engine compartment and the wiring on 'Webster'. Before: After:
  3. Hey all, I was wondering if I could get some help identifying these wires and connectors.i would like to clean up and replace some of the old wires but would like to know what I’m replacing. thanks! Jackie
  4. End stages of re-installing my motor. While the engine was out, I used cloth harness tape to re-wrap the wiring and I failed to properly document where everything went. Tried looking at what diagrams I could find and having a hard time. Intend to pass visual for CA smog (yes, I know...) I've attached pictures and made a couple of drawings. I am referring to the connectors by letter on drawing B. As you can see, there is a disconnected wire "X" and I don't know if it was like that when the car was running (I bought it running with blown head gasket) or if I pulled it by mistake. I need to know where those lettered connectors go please. On drawing A, The harness that crosses from the fender to the engine ended up with three branches: One has two wires on one connector and a heavy red and those go to the alternator Another has two wires on one connector that connect to the starter The last one is a single wire and that is circled with a question mark...(ok, let's call that the"?" wire ) That's the one I don't know Also on drawing A, I show a heavy red cable going from the harness to the alternator and then another daisy-chained from there to the starter. I found great pics of someone's motor that showed this area and it did not have that cable from alternator to starter. Is this a possible "repair" or work-around? This car seems to be very complete as I haven't noticed anything "not there" (except for a couple of parts I errrrr,,,, "misplaced" lol
  5. It feels like I hit a road block, and things have stalled, waiting on parts to come in like the new fuel pump and sending unit. It has really put everything in slow mo... With the wiring being possible the easiest thing to do it's kinda the hardest! C101 connector also came in but I don't want to use any of the old wiring, it just looks to be in bad shape.
  6. Thought I'd post a quick update. I finished up the wiring, built a relay bank, which is mounted in the trunk where the battery will go, and, finally, finished up the exhaust. Wiring mess. Thankfully, one night when it actually rained here, I went through the entire wiring harness, labelled everything, and removed some questionable additions and kill switches added by the previous owner. This mess has to get through two small holes on the driver's side firewall. Relay bank I built with Hella waterproof relays. The two right side relays are Derale relays that I am
  7. Started the harness re-taping and battery relocation. Using 1 inch cloth tape rather than attempting to cut down to 1/2 inch. The harness in the car was dry and flaky after 40+ years of heat. Used Simple Green to clean up the wiring as I went. The engine bay was taped using the cloth tape and I transitioned to flex-cover for the cabin and trunk harness which went on with a bit more ease. No concern for whether it is true to original just want it clean and simple. Mounted the AGM battery in the rear seat area, added the battery cutoff switch and ran the + cable down the driver side to exit the
  8. Day ~59 – 62 About 4 days of work Boring stuff Tidied up some more wiring and got things sorted out so that the battery was ready to be connected. I also installed the b-pillar gaskets and rear windows, with freshly painted window brackets… boooooring. Engine/Transmission/Front Sub-Frame Reunion I didn’t want to put the motor back in only to find out it was leaking from the oil pan because of the cork seal. So, I decided to change the cork seal for the paper version (with some RTV gasket sealant) as recommended by some members (BMW2002FAQ). I inst
  9. Day ~50-54 I figured the logical first step would be to install the sound deadening. I had purchased a bulk pack of Dynamat ‘Superlite’ on ebay in early 2015, when I grossly miscalculated my project’s timeline. I had decided on ‘Superlite’ to keep some weight off the ‘02. It was very easy to install and took me to about 5 hours in all, but I took my time. The next item on my agenda was to clean up some of the wiring, which included re-taping the old harnesses, removing the smog wiring and adding some new wiring. The new wiring would be used to power gauges (oil temp, oil pressure, w
  10. So I opened up a can of worms that the PO of my 74 Tii left me, It all stated with the alternator squeeling. I removed the battery to check out all the bushings and I found an alt that looked like the 318i upgrade but there was no PN/labels. It was cocked at least a good 5deg towards the engine because of the bushing he used to fill the space on the bracket. For my own sanity I decided to buy a new one from BRN that fit the Tii with no spacer: I cut the battery tray out and grabbed the stuff for battery relocation from an e30. However after they tray was out I could see a rats nest of wires the PO had added. I cut away all the junk that I could trace back, mostly to aftermarket mods. Now im left with stuff that im not quite sure about, if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be a huge help. First off, I have the old plug to my external voltage regulator which has the two blue wires cut and attached to a new plug: I assume this is safe to ditch? Secondly, the new plug: I assume I can just cut those blue wires off the crimp, solder a spade on and connect directly to my new alt D+ terminal? Lastly I have a ground that was bundled into this set of 3 black wires that goes into the harness down by the oil filter, any clue what they go to? Red and yellow are +/- for my alt, not in the same bundle.
  11. Hi, My temperature gauge in the dash cluster is not working and there are no wires going to the temperature sensor on the engine. Can you tell me how to wire the temperature sensor and where the wire/wires connect to to make the gauge work? I feel like the engine runs hot and I cant tell when it's overheating. I've searched all over and haven't been able to find the answer. When I got the car, there were no wires going to the temp sensor. Also, I haven't been able to figure it out from the wiring diagram. Thanks in advance. Any tips will help.
  12. So wiring my starter back up and cants seem to get it hooked up quit right it works but gets really hot. Am I correct that one of the thick wires that stems from the battery termnal goes to it? Can someone post a pic of how there's is wired.
  13. Swapped 73 2002 engine into my 69 1600 and having trouble getting her to fire up watch video of it turning over let me know what you think?
  14. So put a 73 2002 engine in my 69 1600 finishing the wiring now car turns over but doesn't seem to be getting a spark thing maybe i have the spark plug distributor wired wrong. so below i have some pictures of wiring Im unsure if its hooked up right could use some input also some hoses that Im unsure of where they hook. thanks in advance!
  15. Can anyone tell me if these are the wires that go to the starter pretty confident they are but can't get starter to crank even though the starter worked on my old engine any ideas I'm not good at wiring but since I swapped a 73 2002 engine into my 1600 I'm wiring it up. Thanks in advance!
  16. I have searched and searched, all over the net not just here, and can’t seem to get a handle on this. If this is a simple noob issue I am OK with that. At times my ignorance knows no bounds. I am trying to figure out whether I need a ballast or not. Installed or being installed: IE Distributor with their electronics (planned) 002 Distributor with Pertronix (being removed for the IE Dist due to slop) MSD 6A box (installed) MSD Blaster 2 coil (planned) MSD Tach Adapter (planned) 8mm wires (installed) New plugs (can’t remember the numbers) Ballast (current) Do I need the ballast? Anything else I need to worry about? Like frying everything because the MSD box and Blaster are too much for the distributor electronics? Thanks for any help!
  17. Hey all, I'm currently in the process of installing an AFR gauge into my cockpit. While I have connected the 02 sensor, and ziptied the cable, I'm having trouble routing the wire into the cabin. The connectors on both sides are rather large, I probably need a nickel-sized hole at the very least. I'd prefer not to cut into the firewall if possible. Also, since it is an AFR gauge, and therefore quite sensitive to any change in resistance, I hesitate to cut and solder the wires as well. My car did have A/C (which has since been plugged). I'd prefer to do something "more factory" if possible. Any suggestions? Mike
  18. What are those 2 small wires from the side of the ignition switch on my 72 2002? they literally fell off when I touched them. The car is nearing restoration completion and the wiring seems to be the next big issue. In fact, when I touch the hot wire feed from the battery, the left blinker goes on by itself- weird.
  19. Hey All, I have a Personal(Nardi) steering wheel that came with my car and was trying to figure out the best way to hook up a horn button. The button is one of those plastic ones with two wires on the back and my wheel has the hole in the back for the wires to pass thru to the steering column, but is there a horn ring or something that I'm missing? Otherwise, if you try to hook the wires up directly, they would just pull loose if you turned the wheel too far. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Greg
  20. so im collecting parts for the EFI conversion, and i was goin thru my wiring harness today and I know that i need to hack up the harness a little.... but which ones do i cut off? ive been gogling this for days and i thought i would be able to figure out by just looking at the harness, but im worried about cutting something off i need, does anyone know what plugs i need? i know injectors, AFM, TPS, cold start, ECU, but is there more? all help is appreciated in advance!!
  21. Does the wiring on the underside of the fuse block ever vary from wiring diagrams or the sticker format?
  22. When did BMW change the harness clips - and why? Did the metal clips break too easily? Was it cheaper to use the plastic "hoop" clips? The nose in my May 69 2002 has bendable metal clips that secure the wiring harness along the edge at the radiator (no plastic hoops). The Sahara 71 nose that I have has the plastic clips along the top edge (just like my 73)
