  1. So this is my first time on here and I just got a 2002 but the bulbs are dead. This might be dumb but I was trying to take out the cluster and it seems that the Speedo cable is stuck on there. I’ve been trying to twist it off for about an hour now with no luck. Any advice?
  2. Hello SoCal 02's - I've acquired a 1974 2002 that runs well and looks great. I'm not a neophyte to car work - I've got a degree in mechanical engineering and have owned a '66 Tbird for 25 years. But I could use a little help. First, I've noticed people throwing around terms like "vintage" and "classic" when referring to parts. What is the '74 2002? Second, where do you guys for parts? My wipers just started staying on all the time, so I'm assuming the windshield wiper stalk/switch needs to be replaced. For something like that I'd like to buy a new one. Suggestions? Third, the most pressing need is to re-upholster the front seats and install a new carpet set. Suggestions? Also, any suggestions on a reputable mechanic for when I get stumped? I live in Huntington Beach. I love the sound my 390 V-8/4 bbl Holley Tbird produces cruising around, but I'm having a blast running around in the light, nimble 2002 4-banger. Hope to run across you guys sometime! Aeroboy
  3. I picked up a car late last year and haven't been able to get it inspected, shame on me. I need to replace the clutch, the rear main seal, and the rear seal on the trans. I took the car out for the first time this year and I saw some coolant leaking from the head/block marriage, so I will probably need a head gasket also.... I'm pretty dejected. I consider myself fairly adept at this wrenching thing, other than all the frozen bolts:) I am short on tools and time so I think I am going to farm it out. Do any of you guys have a mechanic recommendation in the Detroit area? I called one shop, their BMW hourly rate is $150, is this high? What should I expect to pay to have the above jobs done? Thank you, Robert
  4. I've had my '73 2002 parked in a garage in Redmond for 4 years. I take it out on the road about twice a year, usually for no more then an hour. I want to take it on a couple of slightly longer trips (just around Oregon) and want to get it checked out first. One of the first places I'll drive it is Eugene, but ideally I'd like to get it checked before I take it over the mountains. Can anyone recommend someone in the area?
  5. Although I try to do "most" of the work on my car, there are things that I just can't do. When I hit those limits, I turn to one of the best shops I've come across in my 46 years. KB Motorsports, in San Marcos. http://kbmotorsports.biz/ Kip Busse is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to 2002's and his staff is equally as good. Their honest, reliable and respectful as well. I've been using Kip for over 8 years now and have no plan on changing. I just got my '76 2002a back from him today and can't say enough about the subtle tweaking they did to it to make it 100% again. (my brute force and awkwardness could only get my car running so good) If you need a really good mechanic, for any year BMW / Audi / VW or Asian car, you can not go wrong here.
  6. Hi All, My son is looking at buying an older Mini Cooper in Puyallup and I'm hoping you can refer me to a reputable wrench who can do an inspection of the car if we move forward. I know it's not a 2002, but still hoping you can help. Everybody I trust to inspect a car is on the north end. Thanks in advance and stay cool! Greg F
  7. Hey everyone! Names Phil! Just picked up a 1972 and I'm obsessed. She's got a lot of work that needs done and wanted to see if you all had any recommendations. I'm looking for a mechanic that is actually passionate about what they do. There's a BMW shop here in Portland but the guys there seemed like they hated their lives and that just leaves me feeling like they don't take pride in their work. I'm willing to drive around 100 miles to take her somewhere where she'll be treated fairly and right I just had the breaks done and the radiator overhauled and am looking for a mechanic who could do: -Overall maintenance, I got a list of needed fixes from the place I took it to and it's quite the long list -Chrome Trim Replacement -Electrical Work Thanks!!
  8. Hey does anybody know of a good BMW 2002 person/mechanic that works in the Vancouver area. I am in the process of getting my first 2002 (not my first old car, nor my first BMW). I am a recent transplant from Toronto and don't know where to start. Kind Regards M PS.... EH! (lol)
  9. Hey Everyone - Does anyone have a mechanic they can recommend in LA? I have a specialist in Long Beach who is great, but I need someone closer for basic stuff. Echo Park, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village, DTLA, Koreatown or even Hollywood would work. Thanks!
  10. Hi all, I am looking into a car being sold in Jacksonville, Florida. I live in New York and was wondering if there is anyone on here who can recommend a mechanic familiar with old cars/02's in the Jacksonville area. Even better, if anyone on this forum living in the area could go view the car personally. I don't feel comfortable purchasing a vehicle without knowing its true condition. Private message me or reply. Thank you! Ross
  11. I need a mechanic, not a shop for it will be too costly, who works from home or during the weekend, so I can drop my '72 2002 for lots of minor work so at the end I can have it painted. Body is in great condition and zero rust for what I can tell. My wife keeps telling me to get rid of "your junk of a car" but was my first car when I bought it in college in 1978 and is the last thing I want to loose, besides my wife . I am sure that many of you in here have been in the same spot. I am in Westwood near Ucla but willing to have the car tow in the valley or another location outside the busy pricey areas of LA. TIA!
  12. Hi Forum, New member here, just in from a thousand mile drive and looking for advice from the faq. Highlights of the trip include 8 hours of rain, some dirt roads, and a tire blowout on the freeway, it's safe to say the car is in need of a break. And although it's driving and running as well as usual, I doubt it can hurt to let someone more knowledgable look things over... So any leads on 2002 mechanics around Princeton or Central New Jersey? Or somewhere nearby? (I'd also like to note what an incredible body of knowledge you guys have assembled, it's great to have such a thorough and lively resource for learning about these cars. Thanks!)
  13. Looking for a mechanic in Portland OR that knows these cars. Any recommendations?
  14. Hi all, first time posting, but have read various posts over the years. I think my '76 is doomed, please tell me how to help save my BMW 2002 ! Basically, I have a 1976 BMW 2002 that I was not able to fully register because the engine blew after I first bought it, but before I was able to get it smogged and registered. When we bought it we had the oil and other fluids changed, but on the highway the oil filter fell off and well...you can guess from there. I also had collected quite a lot of great parts and even have another engine that drove really well. We have all the parts for a 5-speed conversion, LSD and axles, brand new 3-core radiator, new old stock kidney, etc... The purpose was for me to do a custom restoration to make it the way we wanted it, but I realized the work was beyond me. My wife was going to have it as her daily driver and has been waiting years for me to get this done. Now we have the money to pay an expert mechanic to do the restoration. The problem is that since it is a 1976, the smog laws seem to have created a situation we cannot legally get out of. We also have a parts car, I think it is a 1975, but would require more serious restoration work. We really need help here. I don't want to end up just parting it all out and scrapping the bodies, but I can't see any way to avoid this fate! Anyone out there who can help me save our '76 ?
