  1. Hello all, Since there is an absence of older and better performing headlights like the Hella "SUPER" and the Marchal "AMPLILUX" I started looking into currently available options to replace sealed beams. I have discovered a source - the Classic Garage guys - and am trying to get a group buy going at a discounted price for the forum. There is a possible version that will work, takes an H4 lamp and bolts right in (US Buckets compatible). You may have seen it, part number 82440 and running retail at $110 with standard lamps (nothing especially bright). This is a good light, from a good manufacturer. I will try to get a picture of it and post here. The only thing is, it is not a flat light, it has a slight dome. This is the original shape for US cars, more or less, so you might think 'period correct.' I am looking for numbers - so I can possibly negotiate a better price for these lights. Looking to sell pairs only, but if two of you want one each, I won't squawk. Wish I could still get the old lights, they performed quite well... but have gone the way of the dodo, so ridiculous prices at online auctions are the norm. And please don't ask me about LED headlights, I am not going there (at least for now). Andy
  2. I will be doing a full install of this great product I purchased from Dapper Lighting... (v2’s) stay tuned. Time to start the removal process. I started by removing the headlight/grill trim, there are four screws in front and one hook screw (red arrow) in the back. Once it’s removed you can see the headlight ring trim which is held down to the bucket with three small flat head screws Now that the headlight is removed you has clear access to the headlight bucket and bracket. There are four bolts holding it down, the bracket should fall rig
  3. While the electrical system of the 2002 is no Lucas catastrophe, it's still 60's level technology and has its fair share of shortcomings. I'll refrain from labeling it 'poorly designed,' but the headlight circuit is one of the primary 2002 electrical systems that has lots of 'room for improvement.' Also, with the popularity of adding additional fog and/or driving lights to these cars, this makes for the perfect time to rewire and improve this whole system while adding such upgrades. A quick note on 2002 wiring Generally speaking, Germans are clever, organized people,
  4. Hi So after a nice summer the headlights have stopped working, the parking lights & turn signals work as do the tail lights/brake lights. SO some FAQ guys have re-wired the head lights? Need recommendations of where to start...thanks
  5. Love the headlight housings and chrome plated rear taillights! So much fun to see all this coming together! ?
  6. Radiator is mounted, all the trim holes and rust spots are finally taken care of. Now they just need to mount the front spoiler, and get the quad headlights mounted. Rear brace and battery holder is done as well. Still need to mount the fuel cell and delete the spare tire well so there is room for the exhaust. Unfortunately that wasn't included in the original bid. Also, still waiting on the rear subframe so I can install the rear coilovers. Shot of the front adjustable camber/castor. Here is a picture of my quad headlight setup. Pretty rare, should make the car nice an unique.
  7. I'm looking for a light switch for my 76 non tii. I attached some pictures. I kept burning out the #8 fuse and when I tried to take out the light switch to check the wires, it fell apart in my hands. Looks to have some missing pieces. Please let me know if you are selling one. I don't believe it is fixable but if anyone has any information on that, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Roberto
  8. Hey all, There has been a lot of chatter on the original post (below) so I decided to start a new thread. As of today only a few pairs are left, so IF YOU WANT A PAIR, let me know right away. Price has gone down a tad, as well! The lights are available with the small 4-watt 'city light' socket below the main H4 lamp. If you want, I have a harness to connect them, $17. HO lamps too, or just use any old thing if you don't care... they take the mini bayonet base, 9 mm diameter with two pins exactly opposite each other. Stick with nickel base if you can, the silver color. Stay away from brass... corrosion is sure to follow. I put together an installation kit for these, including Lamps, Wiring (as needed) and headlight protection film. For 'no city light' there are two H4 lamps, plug them in. 'With city light' add two small lamps and wiring. Or you can do your own wiring if you like, just let me know. City lights can be wired to work independently with the parking and clearance lights, if you have this feature and want to keep it. That's where the turn signal lights up the parking lights on one side of the car - Clearance Lights - works when the key is off, in case you have to tuck it into the hedge on a narrow road, to show the car to passing motorists. I believe this was common in the UK and Europe where off street parking is hard to find. Nowadays, most 2002s sleep in garages where it's warm and cozy! I had a wait list from last order in August 2015, so if you want to be back on an ACTIVE Wait List, send me an email or PM. I just installed a pair in Polyak's 2002tii, that is a VERY nice example. VERY clean! He's just up the street at Colorado School of Mines, in case you wondered. He also has my dual tail light upgrade, quite stylish and very safe. Maybe I can get him to post his reaction and pictures???
  9. So let me lay out some history with this problem. Just about a month ago, my battery kept draining. After some looking around, it turned out the seals on the alternator were broken (not allowing the alternator to turn/rotate the belt on startup because the alternator was so loose and moving around with the broken/squashed seals). I had already picked up a used alternator from another 2002, so was sort of at split roads — should I swap the seals into my original one and use the rest of the life it has or swap in the new used one (which I don't know the health of). I decided to swap seals, use original one meanwhile keeping the other one as a spare. Problem solved, we're running again. I recently purchased some new brighter & stronger headlights (since mine were giving out within time anyways). I went with the praised HELLA Vision Plus Halogen Conversion Headlamp 12V 60/55W (HB2) headlights. After receiving, simply connected the old wire back to the headlights and popped them back in. On my drive home from the coast the next day, my lights were working nicely and strongly (very impressed). Once I had arrived, turned off my engine. When I went to start it back up, dead. Nothing. I was sort of confused, since 60/55W is what can be used on my stock '76 without relays (from what I understand). Now, everytime I need to drive — need a jump start. I let it charge for a good 10 minutes off my other sedan, and without the lights on it seemed to startup next time if I made sure not to turn on my headlights. But if it's a quick jumpstart, it'll be dead next time you're starting it. I've been told it can't be the alternator instead an exposed wire, while some say it's the alternator going bad. What are my first steps? Can someone give me a direction of where I should get started? Sorry for the rant, hope someone can help me on here. Many thanks!..,
  10. My gauge cluster lights weren't working, so after switching the bulbs with no luck I started looking at the headlight switch as the potential culprit. Sure enough the coil for the rheostat inside the switch was hanging lose. I ordered a new switch from Rogers Tii, and when I finally got around to installing it I noticed it was slightly different than the switch I took out of the dash. I contacted Rogers and he asked that I send him a few pictures. I did, and his only reply was that one of the switches was European. I've asked him for clarification a few times as to which switch is European, and which is North American but haven't got any reply. Anyway, my point of this thread isn't to slag his business/poor service, but rather I'm just looking to see if anyone can help me identify the switch I was sent? Also, I'm wondering if anyone has ever installed one of these? My buddy and I tried to install it using a multimeter and some trial and error, but couldn't get it set up right. I'm thinking I have some other wiring gremlins to sort out too, but want to see if this new switch is even going to work first. The vertical switch (first picture) is the one I removed, the horizontal one (second picture) is the one I was sent. Thanks in advance.
  11. It blows me away how some things happen... I bought my first 2002 ( a 1973 Sahara ), in Dec 1972. Then picked up a pair of SEV Amplilux Marchals shortly afterwards, and let me tell you, back in the day, they were tons BRIGHTer than anything on the road! Like many of today's lighting systems, they had an incredibly flat-top illumination on low beam; blindingly bright highbeams. Sorry to say, my '02 didn’t survive. So I took the Marchals off the its carcass, and gave them to my friend, who also had a 2002. After a few years, he got rid of his ’02, and gave the Marchals to his brother, who put them on an old Saab that he proceeded to drive into the ground. That was over 30 years ago, and I never gave them another thought. Lo and behold, out of the blue my old buddy calls me up and says that when he was cleaning out his garage, he came across the Marchals. He had forgotten that his brother gave them back to him, and he wanted to know if I’d like ‘em back. “Sure!” says me, “I’ll take ‘em back in a heartbeat!!” So, after over 40 years, they’re back home to roost. They're showing a little wear, but not bad at all. The reflectors are still bright and shiny. I can’t wait to clean them up, put some new Sylvania SilverStar H1 and H3 bulbs in them, and install them. Just for giggles, I looked up some similar NOS Marchals on ebay and found they’re going for major big bucks; like between $675 and $999 a pair!!! Okay, mine are used, but still, those prices are Simply Crazy! I think I originally paid around $75 for the pair in 1972, which was a 'whole lotta scratch' back then. Getting Schatzi ( my ’72 ‘02 Malaga ) ready for a dust-off-drive this weekend. -Bob
  12. Just wondering if anyone could give any advice on what headlights these are? they are awesome
  13. so..... my headlights were working fine for a long time.... one day i went in my car. turned them on..... and nothing. nothing on my hazards either. my turn signal/running lights work. and IIRC my brake on lights arent working either... i replaced the front sealed beams. still nothing. went and followed the wires from the headlight all the way to dash, so i took my cluster out to make sure they had good contact with the switch. all seemed fine... fuses are all fine as well. not really sure where else to check...
  14. I'm installing relays for the headlights in my 1972. The single high-beam white wire in the engine compartment serves both left and right headlights. However, there are two low-beam wires, the left is yellow/black; the right is yellow (or white)/blue. The question: Should I splice the two low-beam wires before and after the low-beam relay? If not, then what? Thanks! Fran Ferrance [email protected]
  15. I have Hella Rallye 1000 Black Magic lights and noticed that I took a rock to one of the glass lenses. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement lense? The Hella website is no help unless I missed something. Summit racing can't get them either. Feel free to email me direct at gjfazzio at comcast dot net. Thanks in advance! Greg
  16. I know this comes as no surprise to most of you, but wow! What a difference. I just installed the H4 e-code headlights with standard 55/65 bulbs and drove the back way on the darkest roads I could think of to pick up dinner. I have a 74 (already has relays in the headlight circuit), so just plugged them in and was on the road in 30 minutes. I have a harness I bought on eBay with relays and a direct connection to the battery. I'll add this over the weekend but it's probably unnecessary. I hated driving the 2002 at night with the regular sealed beam headlights but now lighting is almost as good as the xenon lights in my A3. Anyone thinking about doing this should go for it. I'll take a few pictures of the harness install and add them here but it looks like another 30 minute job.
  17. Price:: 60 Location: : Los Angeles 2 used Hella H4s (7") with 60/55 bulbs in very good/excellent working condition. Backs are dusty in the pic (cleaned since), but the bulbs appear to be new. Part # on the lens: 002-125-427 Asking $60 for the pair.
  18. Since I keep getting messages and email asking if I still do this, I thought it would make sense to repost. YES, I still am repairing, restoring, and upgrading lights for 2002s and related cars, front and rear. Lights I currently have in the shop or have restored and designed upgrades for include 2002 round, square and Touring, E3 Bavaria 3.0Si, E9 3.0CSi, E21 and E30 threes, E12, E28, E39 fives, E24 sixes, E23 and E32 sevens, and the odd VW, Audi, and Mercedes Benz. And my latest restoration, a rare 1967 GLAS / BMW 1600 GT, one of 1255 made, and one of very few remaining on the road!!! They sell for over $80K on occasion. Also have done several center brake light installations, including an all red 2002 round tail light converted for package shelf-mounted center brake light use, Hella LED and tungsten filament lamped center brake lights, both interior and exterior mount, even grafted a Mercedes Benz center brake light into a Saturn (for the wife's old car, long since down the road). I have re-tinted and repaired round lenses, repaired center contacts that were broken, and stripped (bead blasting) and restored silver reflectors to enhance the light output. Now with all this you will have at least a fighting chance to be seen from behind, and avoid having some BDBH send another 2002 to the body shop -- or worse. Latest developments include: Relay-powered triple-tail-light, double-brake-light conversions for 3, 5 and 6 series lights; Hella 'modern' H1 and H4 headlights for both small and large diameter applications, with city lights; Amber tinted high output lamps for clear turn signals, with or without parking light; Legalization of cheap 'imported' plastic lights with clear or smoke lenses and oddly colored lamps; Octopus design to bypass ALL contacts and metal parts (corrosion) between harness and lamp in E28 fives. Franz, my 1986 535i, has a monster conversion to triple tails, triple brakes, and flashing side markers. And since you were about to ask- NO the tail light is not also a brake light, I have a solution with no risk of melting the lens, it employs another part of the light as a third brake. It is quite red, matching the other two perfectly. As my wife says, I tend to think outside the pizza box; my 'Auto-Hippo-Cratic Oath' is: "First, harm no wires or lenses." I look forward to your questions and comments. Thanks!
  19. Headlight order going in soon- I am looking at a pair of the Hella SUPER, 7 inch H4 light from Germany ... anyone know about them? These are a sealed beam replacement, bolt right in, plug in and go. An upgrade over about anything available, far superior optics, and they offer an optional city light if you like that sort of thing. Designed in the mid-1990's, so far better design than the typical halogen reflectors. So, who on the forum has these lights, and do you like them? A Pair of these is currently in Ryan's 1974 2002 "M2 project" car. I sent headlight protection film and high output Narva RangePower 50+ lamps with the lights. As some folks say, they provide "absolutely stunning performance." Retailing elsewhere at $123 per light, I think I can get for $65 each (std), or $84 each (w/city light), plus shipping, light bulbs, and film if you want it. Anyone interested? Email me ASAP. I will be placing the order in a day or so, act now if you are at least somewhat sure you'd like a set at this price. If not, no biggie, but they are imported from Germany, 10-12 weeks delivery, and may be a little more coin if ordered one set at a time. I know, be suspicious if it HAS to be paid now; but these will still be a good deal if you order in a week; it just delays their arrival is all. If you want to think about it, that's good, but let me know now if you MIGHT consider a pair, and I'll let them know to put enough in the box in Germany so that you don't have to wait another three or four months for the next order to go in. We don't like to order weekly, you understand. Will post a picture later, open it up for discussion.

  21. Hi guys, I'm currently taking apart my 2002 to prepare it for painting, I'm the 4th owner, 3rd "enthusiast" owner. I've come across a few wires which aren't connected to anything. I'd like to identify them and their use, if useless, I'll go through the harness to remove them completely. Unused connecters/wires Bellow windshield: 3x small connectors Around brake booster: 2x large connectors, 1x medium, 2x small, 2x single Next to distributor: 1x small connector thanks a lot guys! Anthony
  22. Driving home tonight, all of a sudden my headlights flash into high beam, I'm talking SUPER HIGH beaM! Did not touch the low/high switch at all. Gauge display lamp as well went super bright, turned on blinker and it too was BRIGHT! Turned right on a street and then they switched back to the low beam I had them on. I flicked the hi-beam switch and out they went, black...switched it back to low-beammmmm and there was light. Did this several times to test it and now I have no high beam. Checked fuses, all good. Will check for loose connections in the morning. Anybody know what happened here? It's got me confused as to what it could be. It just Switched to SUPER high beam....then back to low....now no high beam? BizZare... HELP!
  23. I have a pair of 7-inch Marchal headlights for sale. The lens is cracked on one of them and both have some tarnish on the bottom of the mirror. I'll take $50 + shipping for the pair.
  24. My car is in the shop currently (fingers crossed I make it to the Faultline 500 this Friday) due to a caliper bolt mishap and a DOA Ireland Brake Booster. Anywho in my race prep mind I got to thinking what a reasonable drop was from headlights + foglights on a 02 might be? I just put in a 318i 90amp alternator, and got strong readings at the battery with everything on. However when I flip on the headlights + fog lights + brights I get about a 400 RPM drop in engine speed. I was curious if this was typical or if it signaled a failing battery. I had a starter motor short out on me which cooked the original battery terminal cables. However the car has always cranked thereafter and been happy. My thought is - should I get a new battery before driving into oblivion, or should I not mess with the "environment" so to speak?
