  1. Guys, I've had some problems with my exhaust falling off. It rattles all of the time and has been getting worse (2k-3.5k rpm) Finally got her up on a lift and noticed that I don't have a support where the exhaust meets the header. The previous owner installed a 5 speed. From what I can tell, it doesn't look like it has the holes for a bracket to hold the exhaust on. I'd love to get the FAQ's input on the situation, because I want to avoid having the pipes break off again. Mike
  2. Just discovered the IE Downpipe on my IE header cracked. The photo shows a crack at the top but it’s actually cracked almost the entire diameter. Is this repairable? thanks. carlos.
  3. A few pics of exhaust being mocked up and installation finals after dropping her off, then home again.
  4. I've been chunking away at the car in small bits and pieces as time and money allow, I figured I'd write an update to keep myself honest with the progress. I took the advice given here and have been addressing the issues that could potentially injure or kill me. I've replaced the fuel filler neck, fuel lines from the sender to the carburetor, adjusted the valves and cleaned up the engine bay. I'm impressed by the increase in 'pep' from the motor with the adjustment, and the elimination of fumes is important when driving with my 9-month old co-pilot. I also bought the LED taillight
  5. This was quite the project. I've never build an exhaust system before so the challenge was a steep one. A quick note: Why didn't I just run a “Y pipe” and run a single pipe all the way back. Yes it would be easier, cheaper, and more compact. Ill counter your question with another - Why are there no performance exhausts for sale for any I6 or v8 BMW that utilize a single pipe? The answer (in my opinion) Is that #1, I6 motors sound like POOP with a single pipe, like, really bad. #2 There is also the efficiency of the motor to take into consideration. Clearly BMW as designed and the
  6. Simeon

    Exhausting times

Well it's been a while since I have posted (again). As before, the tempo of work has slowed and now I am tackling things as they arise and as the opportunity presents itself. Since my last post, I have fitted my 123 Tune + distributor which I am now having fun (in a good way) playing with the tune. I should probably write a post on that on its own just to document what I have done installation wise plus, of course, how I have tuned it. Bear with me if you are tuning in for that, I will get to that later on. While investigating a no-start condition, I idly triggered my multi spark
  7. Thought I'd post a quick update. I finished up the wiring, built a relay bank, which is mounted in the trunk where the battery will go, and, finally, finished up the exhaust. Wiring mess. Thankfully, one night when it actually rained here, I went through the entire wiring harness, labelled everything, and removed some questionable additions and kill switches added by the previous owner. This mess has to get through two small holes on the driver's side firewall. Relay bank I built with Hella waterproof relays. The two right side relays are Derale relays that I am
  8. As promised I have some updates for the exhaust system. This was a mega pain to finish, mainly because the weather was lousy this weekend. Ever try to weld in 40mph wind gusts? Not fun. But first, some pics of refitting headlights and rear roundel. Front end. In a previous posts, I mentioned that the roundel for the rear panel did not fit with the grommets. So, I decided to cut some threads into the posts and install them with lock nuts. Rear end. On to the exhaust. The entire system, including hangers is 304 Stainless steel. The tubes 2.5" the length
  9. Here are some updates on the reassembly. This first pic is of another angle before getting started. I also removed all the flares while working on the car. Driver's side. Paint is pretty nice, of course like anything, if you look for flaws you are going to find them. They are minor and I have planned for some touch ups, after assembly. Installed the trunk and trunk seal. If anyone has ideas on installing the rear panel roundel / emblem please let me know. The studs on the back of the emblem fit so snugly in the holes that there is no room for the emblem grommet and I
  10. Looking to turbo my '74 2002 and trying to find an exhaust manifold. Anyone have a good source for one? Opinions on this popular eBay mani? http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-M10-Stainless-Turbo-Header-Manifold-T3-BMW-2002-TurboCharger-Bimmer-CUSTOM-/271232131588?fits=Make%3ABMW|Submodel%3ATurbo&hash=item3f26b1e204:m:mu9mhmkKqN9f6LyPvCcII8A&vxp=mtr#rpdCntId EDIT (8/17/16): Looks like the best source for a quality manifold is from Rapid Spool Industries for $595 http://www.rapidspoolindustries.com/ordering/m10-m42-turbo-manifolds I know they make quality products - Kameron from KA Motors uses this company for his E30 M20 400+ whp builds.
  11. I'm looking for a set (or at least four) of the shoulder type header studs that have the non-threaded part half way through to prevent overthreading. If anyone has a set lying around it would be appreciated! Thanks! -Jonathan
  12. Ray, Here you go. This is because of my bad habits. Because I don't drive my 2002 enough, or long enough - water build up in the muffler finally caused a failure. I had noticed an exhaust leak a few weeks ago, but I thought it was the do-nut between the collector and the resonator. Put it up on the lift today, and found this: Looks like I need a new muffler. The nice thing - getting the old muffler off was about 5 minutes of work. The hardest part was getting the chrome exhaust tip off the old muffler. Ordered a new one. It should be here next week. In the mean time, tomorrow I'm going to change the fuel line from the gas tank to the line under the car.
  13. I have an exhaust manifold that I am not sure if it is truly a "tii" component. I have done a search and I'm still not sure. We there two types of "tii" exhaust? Someone has added a port that is capped. So, is this truly a "tii" exhaust? Also, will it help to improve the performance if installed on a stock motor? I appreciate any help in identifying this header and learning if it can help the performance of a stock 2.0L engine in a 1976 '02?
  14. Hi all! Just bought a 1973 BMW 2002. She's a beauty and I love her. I felt like a bad a$$ in California when I told my friends that I'll no longer be wasting time at smog checks. Joke is on me, as I nearly suffocated driving home from work yesterday in stop-and-go traffic. I drive with the windows down and exhaust seems to get into the car and settle/sink until the point it was so filled with exhaust that I had to pull over and air it out. Shame on me for not thinking this one through. Anyway, I'm wondering what my options are. It's a risk to my health to drive this car around as my daily for the next year without a cat to convert the "bad stuff" out. I'm pretty sure there's no option of putting a cat in the exhaust system. Maybe though, if you tune the air/fuel ratio to get it running hotter and monitor engine temps to not get too hot. Does anyone have experience with that? Other options might be keeping fumes out: 12V fan? Maybe I'll make like the Chinese and drive around with an air-pollution mask. I'm only half joking with that one... I like my lungs after all.
  15. OK guys, I've searched and to avail can I find any such noise as the one I'm experiencing. I'm running a Stahl Header with full Supersprint(vintage) exhaust which I believe is stainless. I took it to a local exhaust shop and all they could tell me is that it is an 'old' stainless system that should be pulled for a mild steel and the stainless will expand more and make that noise. Under normal engine/exhaust temps, there are loud rings intermittently emanating from the exhaust system after the header. Check the videos attached. There is one with engine running and one w/o. Any and all advice is appreciated. Apologize in advance for the crappy cell video:)!
  16. want to get rid of the emissions control on my '75, want a better set of headers while i'm at it. used or not, doesn't matter. thanks!

  18. Hi there, I need some headers for my M10. looking specifically for an IE set but open to other upgrades too. used is fine, no rush if you need to pull it out of a car, powder coated or not. Thanks! -Ian S.
  19. I am in the process of replacing an old poorly installed exhaust system on a recently acquired 1971 2002. Purchased a parted out stock exhaust manifold from someone on FAQ and bought all the rest on line. When I put in the front exhaust pipe (the one that is attached to the manifold), it was obviously misaligned by about an inch or so toward the passenger side. As it is situated, it is impossible to attach it to the transmission mounted support and the pipe is nearly touching the side of the tunnel. Additional information: While I thought I was getting all ANSA exhaust components, the front pipe was actually a IMASAF part. Investigating further, the IMSAF part number seems to be correct (although the IMSAF website is in a European language). Below are a couple of pictures showing the problem. Can anyone shed any light on this? Other than buying another front pipe and hoping for the best, I'm kind of stumped.
  20. I was replacing my muffler and resonator yesterday, and as best I tried, I couldn't get the front muffler mount to go all the way on. As it is, the rubber hanger is attached, but the little plastic doodad that goes between the rubber and the muffler mount won't go all the way in. I tried putting it in first, but then I couldn't get the hanger around the body mount. Anyway, as it is the plastic piece is on the side of the muffler hanger, and seems to be keeping the whole setup tight, which I hope is the main point of that thing. I'm just worried that it might be also to prevent a hot muffler from melting the rubber bit. Anyone have experience with this? Or suggestions for how to get that thing all the way in place?
  21. Hey guys, I recently put in IE stage 2 headers to replace a stock sized exhaust with Stahl Headers. The engine has had a fair amount done and has dual weber dcoe 45's. I was hoping to (foolishly) make one drive to the exhaust shop with open headers. I had to move the car last night though, and the thing is stupidly loud and constantly backfiring what sounds like gunshots. Power is a joke and torque is basically non-existant. I realize that this is due to poor jetting/tune. I only have to limp 3 miles to the exhaust shop, but the 3 miles is through Chicago, filled with stoplights, stopsigns, and traffic. If I HAD to get in the car and drive it away, how should I tune my carbs? I don't exactly have a ton of time to sit there adjusting, as I'm in the city. My thought process says to richen the mixture, as the flow is higher. Thoughts?
  22. All strapped up and ready to go to the shop first thing in the AM! Can't wait to get the horrible hack job straight-pipe to high-flow muffler crap off. The muffler guys even welded the modified pipe straight onto the original downpipe. Its garbage now. So Steve set me up with everything I need including a new Ansa downpipe, resonator, muffler and hangers/hardware required to get it back to "stock" — or at least close to, anyways.
  23. I just fired up the car for the first time in three months after my transmission swap, auto to G245, oil pan and pump swap, new steering box, new seals in the diff and trans, bushings in different in suspension and much much more. First, today I put the exhaust back on. I had to fabricate a new bracket from the back of transmission to the exhaust pipe. I put the whole exhaust together before tightening the clamp. After starting I see that I have an exhaust leak from the header to exhaust pipe. I replaced the gasket with 18 111 245 500 from BMW, It is a metal crush gasket where the old one looks like it is made out if metal, sandwiched in fiber. Also the old gasket had two holes for the exhaust gases to pass where the new one has a shared passage. Do I have the wrong gasket? I do not want to try to tighten it any more than I already have. Is this a one time use gasket or can I try to reposition it. I see that BMW also sells another gasket that cost three times more. It is 18 11 728 363. Should I try that one? How can I seal this exhause leak? Peter '74 2002A now a 5 speed
