  1. Yesterday, I read that some fortunate person bought a red 2002 and I wondered if I was going to do the same thing. Today, I did. 1976 with 52K miles, sunroof(clean drain tubes), factory air and a factory 5 speed. Now where do I start, as the person before me asked yesterday ? Suspension is at the top of the list and it would be great to know what folks are using. I'd like to lower the car enough to make it look and handle great, yet be able to go over driveway aprons and down the road without concern. I lowered my 740 with DINAN springs and got exactly what I was looking for. The move also increased my gas milage, noticably. I'll use Bilstein Sports for the struts and shocks as I've had previous experience with them also. But, what springs ? Help ? DINAN doesn't make them for us. Then, a top notch header and SS exhaust system. Here again, I'm at a loss. While I've had 3's, 5's, and 7's (all older, when BMW was the BMW I grew up with), I'm brand new to the 2002's and I'm pretty excited. I belive this is the car that not only started the true sports sedan/coupe market while getting BMW turned away from financial ruin. It's always been my favorite car and now I have one. I will definitely spend time in the garage keeping it company. Any help/suggestions/direction would be great. Best, Bill
  2. Hi guys, I'm very new here. I just purchased an 1976 '02 from Toronto, Ontario. She's in pretty good shape but I have a lot fo work ahead of me. I'm slightly mechanically inclined, but not afriad to get my hands dirty and learn. I picked up a couple of books - Haynes Automotive Repair Manual - BMW '02 Restoration Guide - Weber Carburators I haven't even driven it yet because of snow and won't be driving it for a while (need to pass mechanicale inspection). This is my first Carb'ed car, fun fun fun. here are a few details. A shot from the previous owner (it's currentyl sitting on 13" Exim basketweaves) - Rebuilt 1969 M10 block w/ 121ti head - Crane ignition - Ireland 292 cam - 10:1 compression ratio - E12 valves w/ 1800TiSA valve springs - mechanical timing chain tensioner - dual Weber 45 DCOE carbs on Warnford manifold - 2000ti-style airbox - Ireland step header - Ireland polyurethane motor mounts (rear mount needs to be replaced) - E30 M3 starter - Electric aux fan - upgraded fuel system with FPR and Bavaria pump - 5-speed from E21 Issues I will work on first: - Apparently has broken engine mount - Shifter is floppy (side-to-side) when in gear - Driver side door brake - Gas smell in trunk (i think there was even gas on top of the trunk unless it was some type of condensation - Adding rear bench (was previously removed) + 3 point rear belts - Fixing rusted floors - New interior carpet Plan on repainting for next summer - I'm kinda on the fence I like it without flares and with the lower trim... but i think I would also like it with flares. I have time to decide but think I'll go the flare route (need the clearance and enjoy the wide apperance). - I think I need some 15" BBS RSs too:) Comments/Thoughts? If anybody wants the front license plate holder let me know. We don't have front plates in QC.
  3. Hi All, First time posting. First and foremost Thanks to all of those who posted to this forum; all great information that has helped me become familiar with a car that I've wanted for so long. This is my first 2002 and I plan to make this into a daily driver, but it needs to be smogged (familiar subject on this forum). I believe I have all of the smog required parts; air pump, EGR valve, etc (big assumption)....and more. I've scoured the forums to see "how" the smog equipment is configured/installed in the 1976 models and I've found nothing. I've read the diagrams and they're helpful, but if someone has photo(s) of their '76 with the smog equipment installed or point me to a URL with the same I'd really appreciate it. It'll help me understand how the belts and pumps are supposed to be correctly installed and configured. Also, if anyone has pictures of their factory air conditioning pump installed (engine compartment) I'd appreciate it as well. Thx! Here's what I know about the car; -New crate motor -New clutch and flywheel -Came with new 32/36 Weber carb -has factory airconditioning (pump not installed) Here's what I've done so far: -Adjusted all of the valves, rechecked head bolts -New valve cover gasket -New alternator (to be installed today) -replaced rear tail light (cracked) -Installed new license plate lights. -Installed a used Bosch distributor with new o-ring, coil, points, rotor, cap, plugs and wires. -Installed an electric fuel pump w/relay and kill switch -replaced most of the vacuum hoses in engine compartment. -Installing new HID lights ....and more on the project list.
  4. WTB 1976 Model Year 02 Speedometer - w/or w/out cluster. Thank you Ben
  5. Pre-order the It's Hip To Be Square sticker today! The size of the sticker is 5"x3". I am figuring these will ship out on October 1st, this will also be the last day of pre-sales. Comes with free shipping anywhere in the world! http://www.neuemotorsports.com/store/ Thanks for the support!
  6. Another one for discussion - 1976 BMW 2002 Engine + Transmission Swapped Runs Well, No Rust, Great Interior! What's the take on the engine/transmission swap? In one of the pictures under the bonnet, I see "1990(?) Chevy P..." - the donor for the new engine? I'm still learning as much as I can before I buy (hopefully!) next year, so tell me what you like/don't like about this one.
  7. I think the differential is slipping or something. When I go around turns at regular speeds sometimes I hear a "clunk" noise. It feels like it's coming from the back left wheel. But it's hard to tell. I put the car on jacks to try and see the problem. But I'm really just a hack mechanic wannabe. So I have no idea what I'm doing. Any ideas?
  8. Ive searched as much as i can stand and i still have not found an answer. I have a 1976 2002 and because i live in silly california it a smog tested vehicle. Ive had a stumbling issue and recently an odd grinding noise coming from the engine bay. After fully inspecting the ignition system i noticed the rotor on the distributor has some deep scratches on it and the contacts inside the cap have some pretty deep scratches and marks in them. I think the grinding noise i have been hearing is the rotor striking the contact points and its causing my stumbling issue. The shaft of the distributor seems fairly loose (1/8 inch of movement up/down and right/left) and I'm sure the bushings inside are shot. I was looking for a rebuild kit without any luck and my next option was the IE Tii distributor with electronic ignition but because my distributor Bosch 0 231 176 059 is a vacuum advanced model i wasn't sure if I would still pass smog with it. Does anyone have an answer for me?

  10. I'm finally looking to pick up my first 2002 on Monday! The car sale somewhat looked scam-ish at first, because the owner did not have the title in-hand. When asked via text, he mentioned he was selling the car for a friend in California for $500 and title was being mailed to him (the car already had Washington plates on it, if that matters -- he said he got new plates & tabs because it was a California car). Said has registration was in his name, just waiting on the title to arrive. Asked when the title was coming in, he said 2 weeks about 1 week ago..apparently he said it was to come in Thursday (he sent me photos approximately Wednesday). I asked for lots of pictures of everything, including spare wheel wheel and all the other major spots on the '02. There was rain which prevented pictures automatically, but he eventually did get me lots of nice, helpful pictures! When I contacted him at first, I asked him to knock-off the price to 3k (it was originally 4k) -- he automatically agreed (somewhat sounded fishy to me, since he was selling for friend -- he said 3k was what his friend told him he could sell it for). Either way, I'm not sure what's going on here...am I being overcautious? So far the plan is to go out with a friend of mine who owns an '02, but we're not experts on scammers, so don't know what's going on here. Car looks very decent for the price, have cash in hand..just don't know if I should the trigger! PHOTOS: https://www.dropbox....oFLN6m-Dla?dl=0 What do you think? Just need some more brains on this...ask any questions that may pop up in your head! Thanks! P.S. Somewhat of a noob with Craigslist cars...what will I need to purchase this Washington car (I'm an Oregonian). How will the title transfer work? How long can I drive for without anything? How does this all work? EVERYTHING IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
  11. Hey everyone, noob here with a question about tranny swapping and distributor details... First off I'd like to introduce myself, My name is Peter and I have just bought my 1976 2002 automatic here in the Bay Area, CA. This is my first one, Ive owned 2 E28's, a 325is E30, and a bulletproof but junky E36. Anyways, It's just me and my '02 now...beside one E28 that is for sale. I wanted to do the 5-speed swap and am already sourcing parts that I need. The car needs a few essential things beforehand, such as a new front end seal and maybe a few other seals...it sure is wet down there. Also new suspension bushings all around, followed by an alignment. So the problem is, I also need a distributor assembly but when I called BMW they say that they no longer manufacturer them. So I go check for remaned ones and I can only find standard trans parts. Now I can always send my broken one out to be fixed but here is my dilemma... Should I spend all that money fixing an auto distributor when I plan on doing the swap sometime in the near future or should I just hold off and get the part I need when I swap over? And secondly, if I switch to the 5speed from the 320i would I just use the distributor for the '76 2002 standard trans? Or would I need one from a 320i?... I know this might be a dumb question, just wondering if anyone out there can help. Much appreciated, thanks Peter

  14. Hey guys! So after creating a "Blog" of this, I've decided that I like this posting format more. I'll post what I've said in the blog. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Beginning: 28 November 2014 I’ve been waiting a long time for this, but first lets start off with an introduction. Hi, my name is Austin (I go by IND00 on practically everything). I’m 16 and a junior in high school. I’ve always loved cars and mechanics. Recently I’ve been looking for a first car. While everyone else in my school is looking to get Civics or Camrys, I’m looking for a car that I can work on and have fun with. I ended up falling for older cars - specifically the old BMWs. I started my search to find a BMW 2002 (no preference on the taillight style, in case you were wondering). I actually went through about 4 potential deals for a 2002, but either the price wasn’t right or the deal was sketchy. Recently my dad was browsing eBay, a place that I had never really thought to look, and saw a ‘76 that wasn’t running and a was a little rough. It just so happened that it was located right next to Boston - about 20 minutes from where I live. Since I was looking for a project more than an already restored car, my dad and I decided to go check the car out. We talked with the owner (I’ll be giving him the link to this thread, so shoutout to you!), and looked the car over to see how much of a project I had. We told him that we’d go home and talk about it and text him the next day. We texted him, explaining to him that I was putting all my money from my summer job towards this car. The owner was really cool and accepted my offer on the terms that he could get a ride in it next year when it’s nice out! P.S. I love pictures Here's a picture from the eBay add One of the front I pick it up on Saturday, so more pics and such then. I hope to have it running by next week. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Brought it Home: 29 November 2014 So today was the day that I got to bring the car home! Well, not really. Since it doesn't have its new plates yet, I dropped it off at the BMW repair shop I work at so that I can work on it until the plates come in. With some help, I got the engine running! The engine was a little flooded from all the failed attempts at getting the car started. I replaced the spark plugs and away it went. It still needs a lot of tuning and tinkering, but at least it runs. Here are some pictures from picking it up today. When we first got there. This is how flat the front tires were - they wouldn't hold any air. We ran the front two tires to a shop down the street to get new ones on and balanced. There's me sitting in my new car! Loaded up and ready to go. I think I almost had a few heart attacks while trailing it back to my town. More to come within the next few days as I start to dig in a bit more. Community input/feedback is always welcome! __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Update - The First Go-Through: 17 December 2014 Finally back for an update! I've been researching a lot on upgrades and what projects to tackle first. I have a box of parts, but I still need to order a whole bunch of things. So after sitting under a tarp with holes in it for a week with a few rainy days (keep in mind that all the window moldings are practically dust), I got a change to work on my car and go through it a little more. I started by just cleaning the car up using a vacuum and a whole lot of windex. I'm further assessing what needs attention first. I'll try to get some more things done soon and share it with you all. I know that I'm getting it up on a lift this Saturday so that I can make a checklist of parts to order. It's definitely going to need bushings all around, and I know that I'm upgrading the suspension to Bilstein Sport Shocks with Ireland Engineering Stage 2 Springs. Without further ado - picture time. How it sadly sat for a week. Warming the engine up before bringing it into the shop. (All that condensation is on the inside... ) Pulled into the shop to get a little work done. You can still read the letters from the old plates on the mount. How the engine looks now. Don't worry I have the air filter. You can see that the car used to be a nice Verona Red at some point, until one of the previous owners decided to poorly cover all the visible exterior in primer. As it sits now while I try to dry out some of the water from under the carpet. That's it for this update. Feedback is always welcome! __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Right now its tucked away in the corner of the garage keeping dry from the recent blizzard. Once some parts I've bought come in, I'll be doing a big overhual/update. I'll let the anticipation linger. Thanks for reading and feedback is always welcome! -Austin
  15. I'm in the process of replacing my automatic transmission pan gasket and am in need of some replacement copper gasket rings. I did come across another topic in which someone provided the part number for the AT pan drain plug gasket ring (24 11 1 215 097); however, I will also need to replace the four copper gasket rings which seal the transmission-to-radiator supply and return lines. Does anyone have the part-number for this type of gasket ring? Also, on the topic, I'm going to have to purchase a new AT pan gasket; does anyone know of any online sources other than bavauto.com (who appears to charge $30 + shipping for the paper gasket)? Thanks, Ian
  16. Price:: 150 Location: : Santa Rosa, CA Hi All, here's some parts that I don't have any use for; maybe you do? I haven't tried them. They are needed for the visual inspection on the California Smog test on '76 cars. The bits I've pictured are all I have, sorry, no air pump. 150 picked up. shipped? Delivered in the east bay? south bay? let's chat. Sold together as a lot only. as is.
  17. Hey guys, First I just want to say i'm very thankful that we have this group together. I've learned a lot in the time i've been a member here and hope I can add some good information to this Forum as well when I get my build thread/blog all done with. Subject is a 1976 2002 AT that has been fitted with an M20 and G260. I got it running last night and noticed a screeching sound coming from the front crank pulley area. Upon closer inspection I found that the Pulley is just BARELY touching the front sway bar.. Long story short, eventually i'd like to run a better sway bar but for now, I just want it off. I barely got a chance to take a look at it as I had just got the car running around 11pm. I'm going to pull the bar tonight, was just curious if there are any "pro tips" I should know. Really hoping it's not too bad, and that I don't have to do anything like drop the subframe, etc. etc. Cheers.

  24. 1976 BMW 2002. I have owned this car for 15years and it has been very well taken care of and garage kept the entire time. A very good running and driving example. The car starts up very quickly and drives great. Weber Carb. New battery, tires have less than 1k miles on them. Upgraded bushings all around and shocks. Just did a shifter rebuild and it shifts great. 14in BBS baskets weaves in gunmetal. Hella high beams and low beams. No major rust or body damage. The car has A/C but has been disconnected and will need to be refurbished. This car is very solid and in great condition. I have the original seats and an extra set of bumpers included. Price is firm.
  25. Hi, I have recently realized that my driver side rear subframe mount is in rough shape. There are many options out there on the "oem part #" side. My car was built in May 1976. I would like to know which mount to buy, as many numbers seem to overlap. 33331112591 - Rubber mounting left 33331112592 - Rubber mounting right or 33333428100 - Rubber Mounting I might invest in both sides' mounts as if one has failed the other one might be on the way too. I can also be a bit crafty, to if part # 33333428100 has to be "mirrored" to the subframe itself, I might simply drill holes for that. It all depends on price! Thank you!
