1974 BMW 2002tii US #2781801.  BMW Archives confirms a manufacturing date of May 9, 1974, original color Schwarz, with legal delivery to Hoffman Motors, NYC on 6/18/74.  The original Bill of Lading shows delivery to H.A. Boyd in Mt. Gretna, PA.  Boyd was the Owner and General Manager of Manheim BMW established in 1972 in Manheim, PA.  An interview with Thomas Bass, the Sales Manager for Manheim BMW from 1972 to 1982 confirms the car was ordered by Boyd for pick-up in Germany and later shipped back to be sold at Boyd's dealership.  Bass stated Boyd ordered the car for his personal use while on vacation in Germany and had the car shipped back to the dealership for sale.  The car was subsequently sold to Roland "Rollie" Lane on 10/12/74.  Rollie Lane's signature and the purchase date are written in the owner's manual.  Later traded in back to Manheim BMW, the car was next sold to Byron Clark of Lebanon, PA on 10/7/76.  The sales invoice with Tom Bass' signature shows the car selling for $4539.  Byron Clark's service records begin on 11/18/76 at 65,756 miles and end on 11/15/07 at 233,165 miles.  The records show extensive body work due to corrosion and new paint, along with major engine work performed in 1992 during Clark's ownership.  Photos obtained from the body shop that performed the work are below.

After 32 years of ownership, Clark sold the car to Constance Wagner of Hershey, PA in April 2008.  Maintenance records indicate, in part, a NOS cylinder head, Ireland distributor, odometer repair, rear shocks and front struts replaced along with clutch slave cylinder.  4th owner as of February 2021.  Odometer at the time of sale read 236,655 though TMU.  Engine number/body SN match. Includes sunroof, AC, original carpets, passenger side mirror, original factory option alloy rims, and wood shift knob.  New Recaro driver and passenger seats, back seat and door cards were installed in 2012 during Wagner's ownership.  The purchase also included the original factory leather driver and passenger seats as well as the original door cards.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
