    From BMW Group Archives:

“The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2760002 was manufactured on May 10th, 1971 and delivered on January 17th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motor Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060.“

Legal delivery to: Hoffman Motors Corp on January 17, 1972.

This was the second U.S.-spec tii manufactured and it, very fortunately, survives. It was one of two U.S.-spec tii’s manufactured in May 1971. Regular, albeit still limited, production of the U.S.-spec tii did not commence until October 1971. It appears that VIN 2760001, the first of the two May 1971 tii’s, was used in the road test which appeared in the October 1971 Road & Track. The similarly-early manufacturing date of VIN 2760002, this second May tii, suggests that it was also intended for road tests or, at least initially, for service beyond simple delivery to a retail customer in the States. We have no evidence of U.S. tii’s being delivered in the States before December 1971. This car was obviously somewhere from May 1971 until January 1972, when it was legally delivered to Hoffman Motors Corp. And note that legal delivery to Hoffman Motors Corp generally preceded shipping and occurred within one or two weeks of manufacture. This car, no doubt, has a story to tell, with a substantial chapter pre-dating delivery to its first U.S. owner!

The car was listed for sale in the Roundel magazine in June 2011. At the time, it was in Arizona. It had already acquired body modifications in the form of fender flares and deleted trim. This sale listing is discussed in the following thread:

It turned up later in the hands of forum member larbo53, and was discussed and displayed here:

Although modified from its factory form, the car appears to be well-loved and in excellent condition.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
