  1. Thanks everyone. I feel good about having TDC and the distributor installed correctly. Now when I check for spark on all four plugs I got nothing. Previously I had seen it on cylinder #1. Tomorrow I will look under fuse #12 to see what I have there. Should the red wire from the Petronix going to + on the coil also have 12v while cranking or ignition switch on?

  2. I am struggling with TDC on my engine replacement. After botching the install with the automatic transmission I finally have the engine turning over.  I have spark on the number one plug and yes, the distributor was removed while dropping in the engine. What I don’t have is combustion which after digging through past posts means I most likely reinstalled the distributor incorrectly. I have three pictures from the old engine that I believe indicate I’m at TDC. Am I correct?  TIA

Wait, where's your sub frame? Did you remove it separately?

I have the same 1 ton Harbor freight hoist, I removed front diving board bumper to get hoist centered over engine, even at full extension boom was too short.

Think about it for install, then you can lift engine, trans, subframe, even struts in one go, or borrow a 2 ton engine hoist.

Built up the entire set up on my Gorilla garden cart before placing on the dolly.

Well, to add to my stupidness the subframe detached itself from the motor mounts and luckily I wasn’t underneath it. Good tip on taking off the front bumper. Funny how those little things make all the difference in the world.

That about sums it up but the engine is finally on the floor. With the help of my neighbor, an ex Waterpik engineer, we first dropped the transmission and then the engine. My biggest mistake, besides not keeping the transmission connected, was not having the hoist extended enough. Thanks to everyone for your concerns, suggestions and offers to help. Someday I will write up the story in my “Conversations with My Therapist” series. And yes, 2002A’s are still a hoot to drive, especially when you’re 65😀

  5. Well, I thought I would save some time and not take the automatic transmission with the engine. I’m trying to drop the engine the torque converter (?) is hung up on the transmission housing. Maybe I can hoist everything back up and try to slide the engine forward to clear the torque converter. Or I suck it up and drop the transmission too.

  6. I’ve been gone for awhile. My last posts were about my engine rebuild by a well respected Fort Collins mechanic. I should have know when I saw the wrong compression ratio piston in the block I was in trouble. After a $4,700 rebuild and less than a year later I’m puking oil in the cylinder next to the firewall (#4?). I could drive about 15 miles before the plug was completely fouled. This summer I picked up an engine in Denver for $600 and after retiring, and finishing all my outdoor projects, I’m ready to drop the subframe and engine. Here I am with the bolts removed and I plan to lay it down on the cherry picker legs then use the cherry picker to hoist the car up high enough to get it out. Wish me luck as I’ve never done anything like this before.

  7. I just made an appointment at European Motor Cars near Mulberry and Lemay. I spoke with John, who works on the older cars, and was impressed with his knowledge. He had a Tii on the lot and an extra engine in the garage. Couldn’t get in until August 25th but I’m excited to have found someone who seems genuinely honest.

  8. I can call confirm that an 02’s gas tank holds exactly 12.0 gallons. The good car that Binger is it ran out across the street from the gas station. And me, feeling particularly strong this morning after four days off of work, easily pushed it across two lanes of traffic and into the #1 pump spot. I’m guessing there was a full minute of cranking before the gas hit the carb. May we be forever young (at heart).

P.S.  It wasn’t quite as bad as having the oil light come on in my 1976 Honda CVCC wagon with my Dad in the passenger seat. 3A715D37-61D6-4B2B-9B2D-0AA37AD10693.thumb.jpeg.756e81fcdfb6dc6292785d0744711f11.jpeg

  9. I am probably the least qualified person to comment on this but I do have a 1975 02A with all the pollution crap and DIDTA carburetor running smoothly. It wasn’t always that way. First get the automatic choke to work. Probably the only carb with electric and water choke. Next problem I had was burning through points. Lots of slip in my distributor and when I tried to time it ball was all over the place. I was scared to do the 123 so I went with the Pertronix. My distributor was replaced and I have the 008 model. Call Pertronix with your distributor number and get the right one. The ball is still bouncey when I time it but not as bad as before. Mine’s a daily driver kept in the garage. Starting procedure - pump a few times with foot going to floor. Start car with foot off gas. It will start and if it’s pretty cold out will quickly stall. Push pedal once to floor and start it. RPMs will be around 2k. Tap pedal sharply to get it to kick down. Let me know if you want the carb tuning literature that I have. Gluck (good luck).

  10. Well, we’re a pessimistic bunch aren’t we. I’m in this business as the Sustainability Coordinator for a large healthcare system. Anything we can do to use our resources more efficiently will help the cause. Though we’re trending in the right direction we’re way too late. It can’t hurt to become more efficient though. D00B2023-3C29-4C53-8F65-DF727BD6B959.thumb.jpeg.81f6941bf5cfa3224e40d18a0f8b935b.jpeg
